  • GCC - A Performance Monitoring Solution for Distributed Application System Based on JMX
2010 Ninth International Conference on Grid and Cloud Computing, 2010
Co-Authors: Haihua Jiang, Hai Lv, Nan Wang, Rihua Di
    Abstract:

Java Management Extensions (JMX) provides the fundamental architecture and standard theory for monitoring Distributed system. ASM is a very small and very fast Java byte-code manipulation framework. A performance monitoring system is designed for Distributed Application system combining these two technologies and has been integrated seamlessly into the Open Education Management System of Central Radio and TV University successfully. The conclusion is that this solution can achieve run-time monitoring of complex business in large Distributed system and has good performance and scalability.

  • Making Distributed Applications manageable through instrumentation
Journal of Systems and Software, 1999
Co-Authors: Michael Katchabaw, Hanan Lutfiyya, Stephen L. Howard, Andrew D. Marshall, M.a. Bauer
    Abstract:

Abstract The goal of a management system in a Distributed computing environment is to provide a centralized and coordinated view of an otherwise Distributed and heterogeneous collection of hardware and software resources. The management software will, within a policy framework, monitor, analyse and control network resources, system resources, and Distributed Application programs. In our research, we are primarily concerned with the management of Distributed Applications. Of particular interest is how Distributed Application processes can be made manageable. The work described in the current paper focusses on instrumenting these processes to allow them to respond to management requests, generate management reports, and maintain information required by the management system. We present an instrumentation architecture to support this, and discuss a prototype implementation based on it. This prototype was used to experiment with the management of DCE Applications in an OSI-based management environment.

  • CASCON - Toward Distributed Applications management using the OSI management framework
    1994
Co-Authors: James Won-ki Hong, Michael Katchabaw, Michael Bauer, Hanan Lutfiyya
    Abstract:

As more and more mission-critical Applications and services are deployed in Distributed computing environments, managing these Applications and services for increased reliability and performance is becoming an increasingly important and necessary task. Managing Distributed Applications involves monitoring, analyzing, and controlling their behavior as necessary. The OSI Management Framework has been originally proposed for managing networks and their devices. In this paper, we report on our work investigating the use of the OSI Management Framework for managing Distributed Applications. We report on a prototype Distributed Application manager and prototype Distributed Application which utilize the OSI framework. Our experience thus far indicates that the OSI Management Framework provides rich and powerful mechanisms and facilities for managing Distributed Applications.
