How Documentalists update SIMBAD
2018Co-Authors: Buga MihaelaAbstract:The Strasbourg astronomical Data Center (CDS) has been existing for more than 40 years. It develops a service called SIMBAD with over 280.000 bibliographic references for over 7 million astronomical objects (18 million object identifiers). The SIMBAD astronomical database provides basic data, cross-identifications, bibliography and measurements for astronomical objects outside the solar system. SIMBAD brings to the scientific community a value-added content that is updated daily by a team of Documentalists in strong interaction with astronomers and IT specialists. In this poster we will explain how CDS populates SIMBAD with object citations in the main astronomical journals as well as with astronomical data and measurements. We will also explain how the identification between the objects found in the literature and those already existing in SIMBAD is made. Therefore we show the steps followed by the Documentalist team to update the database using different tools developed at CDS like the sky visualiser Aladin and the large catalogues and survey database VizieR. As a direct result of this team work, SIMBAD receives more than 400.000 queries per day and integrates almost 10.000 bibliographic references per year.

Shared nomenclature and identifiers for telescopes and instruments
'EDP Sciences', 2017Co-Authors: Perret Emmanuelle, Louys Mireille, Buga Mihaela, Lesteven SoizickAbstract:International audienceIn the context of sharing public data, science results are expected to be reproducible and therefore we need full traceability of the origin of the data. On the Documentalist side, there is a need to relate instrumental origins to the published data. We propose to define a shared nomenclature to index each publication with unique designations for facilities, telescopes and instruments which could benefit from the Virtual Observatory work on semantics. This would help the Documentalists to check the consistency of the instrument description in publications or make it more explicit. Observation period, data quality and spectral coverage, for instance, may be checked by referencing a global instrumentation service which gathers the nominal observation parameters for the telescope/facility/instrument involved. Based on this indexation mechanism, then the bibliographic metrics for telescope /instrument usage would be easy to compute, and tracking services like the ESO telescope bibliography database (TelBib) or others would be easier to feed. This paper traces the existing initiatives and gives the example of a facility description framework reusing Virtual Observatory metadata which could be fed by the community

How Documentalists Update SIMBAD
HAL CCSD, 2014Co-Authors: Buga Mihaela, Lesteven Soizick, Bot Caroline, Brouty Marianne, Bruneau Chantal, Brunet Catherine, Cambresy Laurent, Eisele Aline, Genova Françoise, Loup CécileAbstract:International audienceThe Strasbourg astronomical Data Center (CDS) was created in 1972 and has had a major role in astronomy for more than forty years. CDS develops a service called SIMBAD that provides basic data, cross-identifications, bibliography, and measurements for astronomical objects outside the solar system. It brings to the scientific community an added value to content which is updated daily by a team of Documentalists working together in close collaboration with astronomers and IT specialists. We explain how the CDS staff updates SIMBAD with object citations in the main astronomical journals, as well as with astronomical data and measurements. Documenting Fiction – An Interview with Dan Starer, Researcher, “Documentalist”
InMedia, 2011Co-Authors: Dan Starer, Georges FournierAbstract:This interview with Mr Dan Starer was prompted by recent research on the porosity between fact and fiction that lies at the core of the dramatic treatment of topical and political issues. How much factuality is the fictional genre endowed with? How reliable is it? What are the incentives for scriptwriters and filmmakers to commit themselves to the revisiting of political events? These were some of the directions that this research took. There remained the question of how to make sense of the ...
