IEEE Network, 1998Co-Authors: B BarnettAbstract:Informed voluntary choice of contraception is a key element of high-quality reproductive health services. People should have access to a variety of contraceptive methods as well as information about the efficacy and side effects of specific methods. Choice is one of the basic rights of clients outlined by the International Planned Parenthood Federation. According to a US Agency for International Development (USAID) task force the following are elements of informed choice: the provision of information including counseling on pregnancy breast-feeding contraceptive use and infertility; appropriate information on the range of family planning methods; comprehensive information on the proper use of a clients chosen method; counseling to ensure that clients understand what is said to help them make decisions; and efforts to ensure that a range of methods is available at either the clinic site through community-based distribution or through referral. Clients who already have a preference for a particular method should be given that method after screening and counseling unless it is inappropriate for medical and personal reasons.

Fluorine Tin Oxide as an Alternative to Indium Tin Oxide in Polymer LEDs

SalaneckAbstract:Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes have been investigated for use instead of indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) as the hole-injecting electrode in polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The initial results presented here lead to the conclusion that the electrode-polymer interface is much more complex than a simple energy level diagram might imply. Single-layer devices that differ only in the material of the electrode (FTO or ITO) are compared, as are the effects of different methods of cleaning the electrode material. Aerodynamics and Fibre Transfer at the Cylinder–Doffer Interface

Smoke tracers were utilised to delineate aerodynamic patterns under the cylinder–Doffer set point and the images were analysed as an indication of the pressure and velocity changes of the air flow in the region. High-speed photographic observations of fibre motion in the region were also studied in order to determine the effects of the air flow on fibre transfer. The results showed that due to local air pressure differences, air turbulence is generated under the cylinder–Doffer set point, which may affect fibre configuration during the transfer. From the results an explanation is proposed for the occurrence of turbulent flow under the cylinder–Doffer set point, and ideas previously reported by other researchers about the fibre transfer mechanism are further developed.

Journal of The Textile Institute, 1991Co-Authors: P Grosberg, C IypeAbstract:During the operation or a cotton card with varying Doffer speed, it was, noted that both the cylinder loading and Doffer loading varied with the Doffer speed. From a theoretical analysis of the loading on the Doffer and cylinder during sinusoidal speed changes to the Doffer, it is shown that it is possible to determine the effect of sinusoidal speed changes on the dynamically varying fraction of the cylinder material which returns on the cylinder and does not proceed on to the Doffer from the experimentally determined variations in cylinder and Doffer loading. From the theoretical and experimental results, this dynamically varying fraction is determined and discussed.

The DNA polymerases of Leishmania mexicana.

DNA polymerase A, a high molecular mass enzyme, and DNA polymerase B, a beta-like DNA polymerase were compared to each other and to their mammalian counterparts regarding pH optimum, utilization of templates, and response to various inhibitors and ionic strengths. The results suggest that the DNA polymerases from L. mexicana differ from the host enzymes and may offer a target for chemotherapeutic intervention.
