    Toxoplasmosis is a widely distributed disease that infects birds and mammals, including humans. Acute clinical course of toxoplasmosis is considered to be rare among Domestic Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The aim of this study was to present the first report of fatal acute disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii type BrIII genotype, a typical Brazilian clonal lineage, in a Domestic Rabbit. T. gondii was identified in histological sections of spleen and liver tissue, and these tissues were also immunohistochemically positive for T. gondii. After the histopathological and immunohistochemical confirmation of T. gondii, the genotype of this pathogen was determined via PCR-RFLP with 11 markers (SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, Apico, and CS3) and via microsatellite (MS) analysis with 15 markers (TUB2, W35, TgMA, B18, B17, M33, IV.1, X1.1, M48, M102, N60, N82, AA, N61, and N83). This study shows that type BrIII genotype, circulating in Brazil in different hosts, can cause acute disease in a naturally infected animal host. The described case also involves the first reported occurrence of the 291 allele for the typing marker TUB2 in a type BrIII strain, emphasizing the genetic diversity of T. gondii in Brazil.

    The relative motion of the visceral mass may be important to ventilation during running. A visceral piston hypothesis predicts that, during galloping, cranial motion of the liver during expiration and caudal motion of the liver during inspiration may characterize efficient quadrupedal mammalian locomotion. Although a theoretical model based on vibration mechanics casts doubt on this prediction, only limited direct measurements of visceral mass motion during galloping have been reported. In the present study, mechanical interactions between running, breathing and liver oscillations in the Domestic Rabbit are recorded using synchronized videographic, cineradiographic and pneumotachographic techniques. The analysis focuses on the variation in locomotor-respiratory coupling (LRC) and on the relative position of the liver. Results from running Rabbits show (1) variation in phase angle between the locomotor and respiratory periods that is inconsistent with the 1:1 LRC ratio that has been reported for other galloping mammals; (2) a tendency towards a 1:1 LRC ratio at higher speeds and stride frequencies; and (3) that the relative motion of the liver is caudal during expiration and cranial during inspiration, which is inconsistent with the visceral piston hypothesis. The data presented here are generally consistent with the theoretical vibration mechanics model for liver motion and with a pneumatic stabilization hypothesis that the lungs serve an important role in the stabilization of the thorax during locomotion.

    Abstract:

    Infections with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) are not restricted to humans but infrequently may be transmitted to certain animal species, in some cases resulting in severe disease, including encephalitis and death. Recent studies demonstrate that humanderived HSV-1 field isolates can be typed according to their gG- gIand gE gene sequences. We investigated whether HSV-1 infections of animals were predominantly caused by a certain genotype. Isolates derived from two marmosets and one Domestic Rabbit, however, revealed different genotypes. Despite the very limited number of investigated animal-derived HSV-1 strains, this result does not point towards the existence of certain HSV-1 genotypes with a higher potential of being transmitted to animals.
