Olefin polymer technologies—History and recent progress at The Dow Chemical Company

From Ziegler–Natta catalysis technology, to metallocene technology in the 1990s, to post-metallocene technology today, each new development has increased the producer's freedom in more precisely controlling polymer structure and properties. In the early 1990s, metallocene technology allowed control of polymer composition distributions and long chain branching. Today, post-metallocene technology allows control of stereo-/regio-defects on the polymer backbone for unique propylene-based elastomers and allows control of comonomer ‘blockiness’ for olefin block copolymers. Better control of polymer structure enables a molecular architecture approach in product design to rapidly capture market development needs. This article overviews these technology breakthroughs and describes ongoing research at The Dow Chemical Company in developing new olefins products based on metallocene and post-metallocene technologies. While Dow is highlighted (as the authors are most familiar with the work at Dow), there has been tremendous progress and activity from Exxon Chemical Company and more recently Mitsui PetroChemical and Nova Corporation along with others.

Methods: The risk and expenditure estimates were derived from multiple regression analyses showing relationships between worker demographics, health risks, and medical expenditures. Results: A break-even scenario would require Dow to reduce each of 10 population health risks by 0.17% points per year over the course of 10 years. More successful efforts at reducing health risks in the population would produce a more significant ROI for the Company. Conclusions: Findings from this study were incorporated into other components of a business case for health and productivity management, and these supported continued investments in health improvement programs designed to achieve risk reduction and cost savings.

It is the responsibility of the investigators to interpret their research appropriately for each audience, and to assure that all who have a need or right to know get information in a form meaningful to them. We discuss study communication with examples from a recent evaluation of communication efforts within Dow and our experience with occupational and community studies on dioxin. We also discuss how we currently structure worker and community communication based on this experience. Since each Dow protocol must include a communication plan, when we agree to undertake a study, we are also agreeing to communicate study results. Depending upon the nature and type of the study, there may also be some prestudy communication. We encourage all investigators to share the results of their studies more broadly than just scientific publication and plan for the study communication before the study is initiated.

Information Systems and Internal Organization: A Study of the Dow Chemical Company, 1890–1914

LevensteinAbstract:My dissertation examines the relationship between innovation in information processing and innovation in management organization and strategy. Economists and historians have for years credited new information systems and new accounting techniques with providing necessary support for the growth of the large firm. More recently some have taken to blaming these same innovations for the decline in competitiveness and short term vision of American manufacturers. Frequently, however, little reference is made to the actual content of these changes and their implications for management decision-making. My dissertation attempts to evaluate these claims by examining the managerial demands placed upon the information system of one manufacturing firm during a period of organizational, technological, and strategic change. This case study draws on the Herbert Dow papers, which include Company correspondence, financial statements, factory reports, lab books, etc. These records were formerly kept in boxes in the Company vault, protected by the secretary to Herbert Dow's successors (his son and then his son-in-law) whose diligence prevented their destruction. They are now housed in the Company's archives: a one room schoolhouse where Mrs. Grace Dow taught before she married Herbert Dow. Before submerging myself in these voluminous records, I surveyed the literature on accounting systems in manufacturing firms during the late nineteenth century. Based on studies of the paper, nail, ice, textile, boat, auto, and machine tool industries, I propose a new periodization of changes in information systems. This periodization focuses less on changes in accounting technique than on changes in the function of information systems over this period. The first formal information systems were introduced to monitor people and processes. In firms where there had been increases in labor input
