    'OpenEdition', 2018
    Co-Authors: Silvestri Agnese
    Abstract:

This article analyses the effectiveness and limits of Mirbeau’s literary strategies during his engagement in the Dreyfus Affair. Differently from Dreyfusard intellectuals involved in the Affair who strongly relied on the publication and examination of original documents, Mirbeau believes that mystification can be a useful literary weapon to persuade the public opinion. Thus, Mirbeau’s strategies combine satire and the production of various apocryphal texts: imaginary interviews, fake letters, preposterous statements from well-known personalities. Mirbeau’s chronicles act then as an efficient critical mirror reflecting his opponents’ unfair methods, exposing their systematic use of fake information, their unethical motivations and cruel behaviours

    2016
Co-Authors: Almeida, Valéria Ribeiro Da Silva Franklin
    Abstract:

________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis work proposes an investigation on the relationship between communication and politics, from a perspective that considers the media as central for the comprehension of the communicative processes of the modern age. Through selection of pivotal moments in the history of that relationship, it shows how the political practice changed in new conjuncture configurations of society. The following examples are analyzed: The press and the Dreyfus Affair; cinema and propaganda; radio and president Roosevelt, television and the Kennedy vs. Nixon debate. The intention is to show how the technological mediation and the characteristics and trends of each medium interfere in the communication process, creating new roles and environments in the relationship between society and politics: the emergence of public opinion, new formats of democracy, of representativity and popular participation, political propaganda, changes in discourse and politics action, the rise of new professions linked to that relation, rise in campaign spending and publicity, and the formation of communication conglomerates related to power. The analysis seeks, based on theories that give central value to technologies as instrument of analysis, like the theory of medium, to show that there are tendencies in this relation that can be configured in a future theory of political communication in the contemporaneity, based on the use of media

  • Tracing Antisemitic Language Through Diachronic Embedding Projections: France 1789-1914
    Association for Computational Linguistics, 2019
Co-Authors: Tripodi Rocco, Warglien Massimo, Levis Sullam Simon, Paci Deborah
    Abstract:

We investigate some aspects of the history of antisemitism in France, one of the cradles of modern antisemitism, using diachronic word embeddings. We constructed a large corpus of French books and periodicals issues that contain a keyword related to Jews and performed a diachronic word embedding over the 1789-1914 period. We studied the changes over time in the semantic spaces of 4 target words and performed embedding projections over 6 streams of antisemitic discourse. This allowed us to track the evolution of antisemitic bias in the religious, economic, socio-politic, racial, ethic and conspiratorial domains. Projections show a trend of growing antisemitism, especially in the years starting in the mid-80s and culminating in the Dreyfus Affair. Our analysis also allows us to highlight the peculiar adverse bias towards Judaism in the broader context of other religions

    'OpenEdition', 2018
    Co-Authors: Ginsburger Nicolas
    Abstract:

The memory of Marcel Dubois (1856-1916) is linked with colonial geography he taught at the University of Paris for over 20 years, from 1893 onwards. Yet, this scholar, unusual among Paul Vidal de la Blache’s pupils, took a much more important place in the landscape of the « Fin de siècle » French intellectuals than this specific field of colonial sciences. He was a very engaged scholar, between applied and political geography, colonialism and nationalism, but he was also a leader of opinion, the “superstar” of a Sorbonne school of geography and a very powerful member of the Paris academic elite who played a significant role during the Dreyfus Affair. Our aim here, is to detail his personal and professional path, his social and political networks and his various actions, to get a better image of him in the context of Third Republic Paris and France
