Business cycles synchronization in East Asian Economy: evidences from time-varying coherence study
Economic Modelling, 2011Co-Authors: Jean-pierre Allegret, Essahbi EssaadiAbstract:This paper analyzes the feasibility of a monetary union in East Asia focusing on business cycles synchronization. Considering the critical role of trade integration in the East Asian integration process, we study whether East Asian countries are characterized by business cycle synchronization. The related empirical literature dedicated to business cycles synchronization in East Asia does not lead to firm conclusion. In this paper, we suggest a different empirical approach allowing, contrary to the previous studies, to detect endogenously structural changes in the comovement process between outputs. We apply a new measure based on the time-varying coherence function. Such a measure not only detects comovement dynamics but it distinguishes also this dynamics between short- and long-term. We compute also cohesion statistics to test if countries tend to be more synchronized or not. The main finding of this paper is that the increase in bilateral trade inside the East Asian region significantly improves long-run business cycle synchronization. The short-run influence of bilateral trade shows mixed results. Indeed, short-run cycles remain significantly influenced both by shocks hitting each country and by economic policy responses. As a consequence, more bilateral trade and convergence in economic policy constitute two complementary processes to promote business cycle synchronization.

synchronization in business cycle of East Asian Economy evidence from time varying coherence study
2009Co-Authors: Jean-pierre AllegretAbstract:This paper analyses the dynamic synchronization process in East Asia. Our main purpose is to study the feasibility of a monetary union in this group. To this end, we examine business cycle synchronization in the region. We propose a new empirical methodology based on frequency domain. Firstly, we apply a new measure of comovement allowing us to distinguish period of synchronization and de-synchronization and to determine the cycle properties of it. Second, we compare the satisfaction degree of this criterion for the region. Analysis the degree of cohesion in the region gives us some recommendations about monetary union option in East Asia region. We are interested whether if business cycle in Asia would become more similar over time and if their similarities allow them to

The Analysis of "East-Asia Development Model" under the Dependency Theory Perspective
Journal of Qinghai Normal University, 2010Co-Authors: Liu Yu-ranAbstract:After "World War II",in order to achieve industrialization as soon as possibile and catch up with the developed countries, the East Asian countries, which just broke away. From the colonial ruling of western powers and attained national independence, formed the "East Asia development model" with regional characteristics under similar historical and cultural conditions, according to the situation of their own countries. With this model,East Asia created the miracle of world economic growth. However, the outbreak of the East Asian economic crisis in the late nineties of the twentieth century made the East Asia model suffer from wide-ranging inquiry from academic, political, and financial circles. For instance: can this model provide a way out for the East Asian countries' economic, political, social and cultural sustainable development? Therefore,by using the dependency theory as an explanatory tool, this paper will give an in-depth analysis of the characteristics and causes of the development of the East Asian Economy, and forecast the future trends of this model.

Regulatory Policies and Business Strategies on Patent Protection: A General Model and Cases for the East Asian Economy
Global Economic Review, 2011Co-Authors: Taeha Kim, Beomsoo KimAbstract:This paper proposes a general framework of patent protection which can be applied to most existing theories, and can be used to resolve various issues regarding the protection of information technology (IT)-enabled innovations, especially those involving business methods (BMs) and software. We suggest that one should consider that firms have many strategic choices or mixtures of appropriate combinations of innovations, examine different combinations of menu components rather than focusing on well-explored policies, revise market assumptions to make them more realistic and capture the complexity of policy-strategy assumptions by applying methodologies, such as experiments, system dynamics and intelligent agent theory. The work explores how these innovations are protected using the cases in the East Asian Economy and find out that software and BMs are better protected in the nations that enforce strong patent rights.

taiwan s asia pacific economic strategies after the economic cooperation framework agreement
Journal of The Asia Pacific Economy, 2013Co-Authors: Shiro ArmstrongAbstract:Taiwan has had discriminatory trade and investment policies towards China, severely limiting economic engagement across the Strait. Not having free and open trade with China, one of the largest and most important parts of the East Asian Economy, has resulted in Taiwan's underperforming in attracting foreign direct investment, effectively cut Taiwan off from participating fully in East Asian production networks and prevented the deepening of its specialisation in the regional and international Economy. The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement is a watershed in cross-Strait relations and gives Taiwan the opportunity to integrate more fully into the East Asian Economy. There is pressure now for Taiwan to pursue preferential trade deals with other countries. This is not the best way forward; rather, Taiwan should pursue a multilateral trade strategy and focus on domestic reforms that will bring larger economic gains, economic diversification and avoid the political risks to the cross-Strait relationship a...
