  • The Ecological Movement in post‐totalitarian Russia: Some conceptual issues
    Society & Natural Resources, 1996
    Co-Authors: Oleg N. Yanitsky
    Abstract:

The Ecological Movement in Russia has existed for more than 30 years. As the driving force behind environmental change in Russian society, the Ecological Movement has exerted a significant influence on the course of ongoing reforms. However, recently this Movement has undergone profound transformations. The goal of this article is to consider theoretical issues concerning this Movement in the context of a rapidly changing and risk‐laden post‐totalitarian society, emphasizing the key influences affecting the Movement's transformation: changing local and national contexts, the Movement's internal transformations caused by ideological and political diversification, changing patterns of resource mobilization, the split between “globalists”; and “localists,”;. and the growing gap between radicals and reformers.

  • A Prognostic View on the Ideological Determinants of Violence in the Radical Ecological Movement
    Sustainability, 2020
    Co-Authors: Elżbieta Posłuszna
    Abstract:

Ecologically motivated violence that manifests itself in the animal-rights and environmental forms is not a declining phenomenon. The fluctuating increase of the number of Ecologically motivated crimes during the last 50 years, the multiplicity of the methods used (arson, food poisoning in supermarkets, destruction of equipment, attacks with the use of incentivized devices) should make us look at eco-extremism as a dynamic and difficult to grasp phenomenon. The paper is of both explanatory and prognostic nature; its goal is to present the genesis and essence of Ecological radicalism, as well as to formulate the predictions for the future. In these forecasts, I wish to depart from the frequent, albeit somewhat simplistic, argument that, since the environmental extremist groups have not yet resorted to direct violence (targeting humans), and the animal-rights groups have reached for it very rarely, this state of affairs will continue in the future. This claim does not necessarily have to be true. I argue that some aspects of ideology can induce, in certain circumstances (a growing Ecological catastrophe, further departure from the anthropocentric perspective), a change of the potential of radicalism within the environmental and animal-rights Movements. In the case of animal-rights groups, the principle of not causing harm to people may be openly rejected, and in the case of environmental groups, the actions aimed at the annihilation of the whole human species may be undertaken.

  • The Future of Ecological Extremism
Environmental and Animal Rights Extremism Terrorism and National Security, 2015
    Co-Authors: Elżbieta Posłuszna
    Abstract:

This chapter recapitulates the acquired knowledge about the ideology, current methods of action, and the organizational structure to envision the future of Ecological violence. In particular, it questions which of the radical wings of the Ecological Movement (animal rights or environmental) may continue to radicalize their actions in the future.

  • Leaderless Resistance and Netwars in the Activities of the Ecological Movement: Extremist Wings
Environmental and Animal Rights Extremism Terrorism and National Security, 2015
    Co-Authors: Elżbieta Posłuszna
    Abstract:

This chapter examines the transformations that have taken place within the organizational structures due to the development of new media (especially the Internet), and the consequences of these changes for the proliferation of Ecologically motivated violence. It discusses the trend of these organizations to move from the traditional hierarchical and centrally governed organizational structures toward more decentralized structures, such as chain network, knot structure, multichannel structure, hybrid structure, and leaderless resistance.

  • Environmental action during Romania's early transition years
    Environmental Politics, 1998
Co-Authors: Simina Dragomirescu, Cristina Muica, David Turnock
    Abstract:

As with other countries in ECE, Romania began its transition with some major environmental problems because legislation failed to deliver effective pollution controls. Although scarcely apparent during the last years of Communism, an Ecological Movement achieved early political success and some of the worst affected areas have now seen substantial improvements. In addition, the slow‐down in the economy helped to reduce the scale of environmental damage, although rising unemployment helped to breed a survival mentality which had made the public wary of supporting radical environmental programmes. However, with the help of foreign capital and technology, progress continues to be made on a broad front and the legislative programme of 1995–96 should go a long way to bring Romania into line with EU practices.

  • Accountability through Environmental and Social Reporting by Wind Energy Sector Companies in Spain
    Sustainability, 2020
Co-Authors: José Antonio Moseñe Fierro, M. Victoria Sanagustín-fons, César Álvarez Alonso
    Abstract:

At present, energy transition is a crucial phenomenon that is at the very heart of governmental policies. There are a huge number of stakeholders involved in the change, but among these, the main socioeconomic actors that affect environmental and social impacts are energy companies. In this research, we analyze their institutionalized role in the Spanish wind energy sector, in the framework of the Ecological Movement. We consult the special views, opinions and motivations given by managers responsible for Institutional Relations in the main wind energy companies in Spain, and their perceptions of environmental reporting. We therefore tackle aspects related to the drivers of the social and environmental disclosure of environmental and social information. Research has been carried out based on documentary secondary analysis, and the use of a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews has revealed tendencies and pressures in the sector. Results suggest that the social context and public opinion pressure organizations to reveal environmental and social information. We also put forward how information is conveyed to the society through accountability practices, and the different institutionalized ways in which this is achieved.
