  • does Economic Globalization affect regional inequality a cross country analysis
    World Development, 2013
    Co-Authors: Roberto Ezcurra, Andres Rodriguezpose
    Abstract:

This paper investigates the relationship between Economic Globalization and regional inequality in a panel of 47 countries over the period 1990-2007, using a measure of Globalization that distinguishes the different dimensions of Economic integration. The results show that there is a positive and statistically significant association between Economic Globalization and the magnitude of regional disparities. Countries with a greater degree of Economic integration with the rest of the world tend to register higher levels of regional inequality. This finding is robust to the inclusion of additional explanatory variables and to the choice of the specific measure used to quantify the relevance of spatial inequality within the sample countries. Our analysis also reveals that the spatial impact of Economic Globalization is greater in low- and middle-income countries, whose levels of regional disparities are on average significantly higher than in high-income countries.

  • law and the geographic analysis of Economic Globalization
    Progress in Human Geography, 2011
    Co-Authors: Joshua Barkan
    Abstract:

This article focuses on the curious absence of law in geographic accounts of state restructuring in relation to neoliberal Economic Globalization. It argues that law is ever-present in many of the issues at the center of geographic debates, yet rarely given sustained attention. In response, three approaches are offered, each emphasizing a different aspect of the law and each producing different geographies. First, I consider the absence as symptomatic of the problematic of state theory. Second, I review arguments from outside the discipline of geography concerning the ways actors involved in state restructuring engage with and think about the law. Third, I argue for a historical-philosophical investigation into the way that law produces the pockmarked landscape of the global economy through both the extension of legal frameworks and the legally authorized suspension of legal systems. The final section examines how these different approaches deepen our understanding of Economic Globalization by considering...

  • spillover effects of Economic Globalization on co2 emissions a spatial panel approach
    Energy Economics, 2018
    Co-Authors: Wanhai You
    Abstract:

This paper investigates the spatial effects of Economic Globalization on CO2 emissions in a panel of 83 countries over the period 1985–2013. We apply the spatial panel method to address the problems of spatial dependency and the spillover effect among neighboring countries. First, the estimation results verify the existence of the spatial correlations in CO2 emissions across nations. Second, we find that the indirect effect of Economic Globalization on CO2 emissions is so significantly negative to overcome the positive direct effect, which implies a negative and significant total effect, so our results suggest that being surrounded by highly globalized countries has a positive effect on the environmental quality. Finally, we also find strong evidence for the inverted-U shaped EKC relationship between CO2 emissions and income.
