Objective To educate players and instructors and therefore prevent health problems, by creating a guidebook. Setting Medical checkups for volleyball players at all levels often reveal sports related issues including lower back pain, knee pain such as jumper9s knee, shoulder pain caused by volleyball spikes, ankle joint sprain, digital deformities and anemia. When the history is examined it is often found that many of these problems began at junior or high school level. Result 10 years ago, a guidebook for prevention of Volleyball-related injuries and health problems was prepared using easy-to-understand ‘Manga’ (comic-book illustrations) for both junior players and instructors. Approximately 10 000 copies of the guidebook were distributed for free. Currently, the guidebook is available on the website of the Japan Volleyball Association and Educational Activities for volleyball related health issues are being conducted. Conclusions An English version of the guidebook was prepared for this FIVB Volleyball Medicine Congress. It is our wish that the guidebook be translated into many languages in order to protect valuable junior volleyball players around the world from sports-related injuries. With the help of the participants in the Congress, we ask that the guidebook be translated into their own languages. The goal is to promote Educational Activities through the website of the FIVB.

This tool was conceived specifically for children, applying design techniques to determinate the best shape, material and typography for young students. The content is displayed by projectors, which exhibit the required information only on the blocks surface using an automatic projector calibration technique. The blocks are tracked through a frame marker using the moving edges approach with multiple hypotheses to improve robustness. ARBlocks was evaluated from three different perspectives: computational, Educational and user experience. Technical results show that the platform achieves a real time frame rate and an accurate projector calibration, as well as precisely displays information over the blocks. Additionally, in the Educational evaluation the teachers interviewed asserted that the ARBlocks has a great potential and can be a very useful tool to be used in classrooms. Regarding the user experience, both teachers and children were excited in using this system continuously.

Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, 2020Co-Authors: Angela Gialamas, Dandara G Haag, Murthy N Mittinty, John LynchAbstract:Background To investigate whether time spent in Educational Activities at 2–3 years and developmental outcomes at school entry differ among children from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Methods Participants were from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (n=4253). Time spent in Educational Activities was collected using 24-hour time-use diaries. Income was measured using parent self-report. Receptive vocabulary was assessed using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, and problem behaviours were measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Marginal structural models were used to test whether the effects of Educational Activities on outcomes differed by income. Results Children exposed to both Conclusions Our findings suggest that if there was an intervention of sufficient dose to increase the amount of time spent in Educational Activities to at least 30 min/day for children in the lower-income group, the risk of children having sub-optimal receptive vocabulary would be reduced by 45% and the risk of teacher-reported conduct and hyperactivity problems reduced by 67% and 70%, respectively.

Educational Activities and the role of the parent in homeschool families with high school students
Educational Review, 2016Co-Authors: Daniel Carpenter, Courtney GannAbstract:Using a qualitative case study approach, this study looked at the Educational Activities that constitute a typical day in a homeschool family and the role that the parent has within those Activities. Three homeschooling families with high school students in a single community in a southern state in the United States participated in the case study. Data was collected using observations, field notes, interviews and artifacts. Analysis of the data pointed to an eclectic mix of instructional modalities and Activities used by families. Students often participated in a variety of instructional Activities such as online courses, private tutors, and self-taught classes through the use of a flexible daily schedule. Parents were seen to be more of a facilitator or director of Educational Activities for their children rather than the direct providers of instruction in the homeschool setting.
