    Abstract:

    Abstract Background Information on the internet regarding vascular disease has not been extensively assessed. Our goal was to compile and appraise the information available via Google and YouTube searches regarding various topics of interest for vascular surgeons (VS) and related procedures with a focus on the role of the VS. Methods The Google and YouTube platforms were independently queried for 25 keywords/phrases relating to common vascular diagnoses and procedures by two separate researchers from March to July 2019. Paid advertisements or a Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) webpage or affiliated video in the first 25 results was documented. Results were reviewed for information regarding the responsible medical specialty and the target audience, and disease-related information (screening, risk factors, risk reduction, diagnostic testing, operative treatment, alternative treatment, follow-up, complications, and recovery). Results From the Google search, 357 unique domains of 1241 total webpages were identified with 75% directed toward the public. An SVS page was present in 56% of the first-page results and least likely to be present in searches for claudication, gangrene, carotid stent, rib resection, and thrombolysis. VS were mentioned as referral physicians in 56% of the 68% of websites that mentioned a specialty, endovascular specialists/interventional radiology in 20%, and cardiothoracic surgeons in 19%. Only 4% of the websites contained information from all categories, with the greatest number for aortic dissection. Advertisements were present in 18% of all searches (most commonly for “varicose vein,” “varicose vein surgery,” and “inferior vena cava filter”). From YouTube, 1247 search results (613 unique videos) were evaluated with 64% directed toward the public. An SVS affiliated video was present in 36% of searches. In the 47% of videos where a specialty was mentioned, 56% mentioned VS, interventional radiology in 10%, and cardiothoracic surgeons in 7%. Only 0.24% of the videos contained information from all categories. The greatest number of Content categories was in videos related to peripheral arterial disease. Across both platforms, dialysis access searches yielded results with the least number of Content categories. Conclusions Patient-related information regarding vascular surgical topics is readily available on the internet, but the Content is highly variable and not comprehensive. Only half of the searches mention VS as the referral physician of choice or authority for these medical conditions. Further efforts should focus on developing the online presence of vascular surgery, improving the quality of education of vascular disease on the internet, and directing patients to the vascular specialists to treat these conditions.

    Abstract Background The growth of the social media platform Twitter has prompted many to consider its potential as an Educational tool. Little is known about how surgery training programs are utilizing this resource and whether this platform can provide Educational Content effectively. We sought to determine national utilization of Twitter by departments of surgery in the United States and evaluate if Educationally driven Content heightened engagement with the Twitter followers. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of social media presence for all Accreditation Council for Graduation Medical Education accredited general surgery training programs between October 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Each tweet was characterized as either promotional or Educational. Metrics related to account engagement, including impressions (number of times a tweet is seen) and retweets (number of times a tweet is shared), were compared. These results were compared against a single departmental account focused primarily on Educational Content. Results Thirty-two departmental Twitter accounts were identified from the 272 programs approached associated with accredited general surgery training programs. Training programs posted a median of 1.0 unique tweets (interquartile range: 0.6–2.3) per week. Tweets were primarily promotional (81% of posts) and generated marginal engagement with followers (3.4 likes/tweet; 1.5 retweets/tweet). In contrast, a single, resident-run departmental account at our institution (University of Michigan) focused on Educational Content generated consistent, Educational Content (19.6 unique tweets/week, 48% of which were Educational), which resulted in increased engagement with followers (11.4 likes/tweet; 5.9 retweets/tweet) compared to other accounts. Conclusion Though Twitter is being widely adopted widely by departments of surgery, it is primarily utilized for promotional Content. Use of Educational Content may improve engagement from followers.

    — Children’s interaction with Educational computer games reflects not only their game-playing expertise but also their knowledge and skills about embedded Educational Content. Recent pilot data, drawn from an ongoing evaluation of children’s learning from Educational media, illustrate that, much like earlier research on formal classroom mathematics, children may engage in cycles of increasingly sophisticated mathematical thinking over the course of playing an online game. It is possible to detect these shifts in strategies not only through in-person observations, but via data mining of online tracking data as well. This article discusses implications for the study of mathematical reasoning, children’s use of Educational games, and assessment.

    Abstract:

    Many studies have shown that children of various ages learn from Educational television, but they have not explained how children extract and comprehend Educational Content from these television programs. This paper proposes a model (the capacity model) that focuses on children's allocation of working memory resources while watching television. The model consists of a theoretical construct with three basic components (processing of narrative, processing of Educational Content, and distance, that is, the degree to which the Educational Content is integral or tangential to the narrative), plus several governing principles that determine the allocation of resources between narrative and Educational Content. A review of empirical research points to characteristics of both television programs and viewers that affect the allocation of resources under the model, as well as developmental influences on the relevant processing. Finally, implications for the production of effective Educational television are discussed.
