Methods and materials The evidence-based method included Medline literature review and broad-based training needs assessment. Results Literature review revealed few studies describing or evaluating RO resident training programs. Our program was designed by incorporating available published research and stakeholder views determined by the training needs assessment. The program includes novel evidence-based Educational methods, including individually negotiated learning contracts, a mentor program, logbooks, task-based learning, tutorials, and formative plus summative assessments. The content and structure is consistent with most United States, United Kingdom, and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologist (RANZCR) guidelines, with resident evaluation via RANZCR examinations. The RANZCR accredited the program in January 2002. Conclusion We recommend institutions or countries introducing or revising RO resident training programs use an evidence-based approach, addressing the needs of stake holders (determined by a comprehensive training needs assessment) and incorporating published research. Novel Educational methods may be considered in RO training. This new Singapore program is the first to achieve international accreditation by the RANZCR. It is clear that additional research in the design and evaluation of RO resident training programs is required.

The Model-Based View of Scientific Theories and the Structuring of School Science Programmes
Science & Education, 2007Co-Authors: Maria DevelakiAbstract:Model theory in contemporary philosophy of science interprets scientific theories as sets of Models, and contributes significantly to the understanding of the relation between theories, Models, and the real world. The clarification of this relation is fundamental for the understanding of the nature of scientific methods and scientific knowledge and can contribute to the shaping of epistemologically pertinent Educational Models in science education. We initially present a reconstruction of the most important model-based contributions concerning mainly the nature, construction and the functions of theoretical Models. Our interest focuses particularly on the theory structure scheme of the model-based view, which Ronald Giere explicitly formulated using as a paradigm the structuring of classical mechanical Models, and which we extend to become a base for a structuring of basic quantum mechanical Models. We consider this scheme to provide an adequate basis for the structuring of school science contents; and further propose in outline a way of structuring typical physics content, in which the topics are presented as theoretical Models of the same theory, together with the modelling rules that led to their construction, and also some examples of their empirical application.

Recent policy statements from the American Academy of Pediatrics and requirements from Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review committees emphasizing the importance of community pediatrics training have provided additional incentive for pediatric residency programs to actively explore methods of teaching the principles and promoting the practice of community pediatrics to resident trainees. With a growing number of diverse Educational Models in various stages of practice or development, common themes and approaches to promote successful teaching of community health and child advocacy can be described. This article defines strategies for 2 critical elements of community pediatrics training, engaging residents and building strong community partnerships, then highlights a number of Educational Models that illustrate key curricular components and methods. Published results from evaluations of some programs suggest that community pediatrics training of this caliber will cultivate a cadre of pediatricians (academic and community based, generalists and subspecialists, researchers and practitioners) who understand child health in the context of community and have the leadership and collaborative skills to improve the health of children in their communities.

the future of hydrology an evolving science for a changing world

Our approach to the science of hydrology needs to significantly change so that we can understand and predict these implications. Such an adjustment is a necessary prerequisite for the development of sustainable water resource management strategies and to achieve long-term water security for people and the environment. Hydrology requires a paradigm shift in which predictions of system behavior that are beyond the range of previously observed variability or that result from significant alterations of physical (structural) system characteristics become the new norm. To achieve this shift, hydrologists must become both synthesists, observing and analyzing the system as a holistic entity, and analysts, understanding the functioning of individual system components, while operating firmly within a well-designed hypothesis testing framework. Cross-disciplinary integration must become a primary characteristic of hydrologic research, catalyzing new research and nurturing new Educational Models. The test of our quantitative understanding across atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere will necessarily lie in new approaches to benchmark our ability to predict the regional hydrologic and connected implications of environmental change. To address these challenges and to serve as a catalyst to bring about the necessary changes to hydrologic science, we call for a long-term initiative to address the regional implications of environmental change.
