Social Justice as a Link between Sustainability and Educational Sciences

KetschauAbstract:This position paper defines and substantiates the relevance of Educational Sciences as design elements of socially sustainable development in economics and society. Therefore, a theoretical-normative link of the fields of social sustainability, social justice, and Educational Sciences is discussed to build a foundation for further concepts that may synergistically address social sustainability and education. Because social sustainability currently seems to be the least addressed dimension of sustainability research and practice, this paper might provide a new impulse in this field. The linkage of the three fields will be accomplished with a hermeneutic-analytical approach, identifying possible interdependencies in the relevant theories and concepts of the disciplines and suggesting necessary modifications. Based on this foundation, a theoretical-normative construct will be designed that describes the link and may be used to deduct practice-related concepts in order to construct related measures.

Method: Participants were 60 undergraduate students at Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Bucharest, aged between 19 and 23 years old; Instruments: Attitudes to Work test (Vienna Test System, 2012). Findings show that fatigue influences statistically significant the performance level (t=3.99; p=0.00001<0.01) and also tolerance to frustration (t=-2.78; p=0.007<0.01) among young Romanian psychology students. These effects can be observed either on long-term or on short-term sleep deprivation (Pilcher & Huffcutt, 1996).

Applicability of a Cyberbullying Videogame as a Teacher Tool: Comparing Teachers and Educational Sciences Students

It is designed as an Educational tool for teachers to be used in classrooms with their students to provide a common experience in class about bullying and cyberbullying. When playing the game, students are placed in the role of victims, making them reflect on the problems, consequences, and strategies that do and do not work. In addition, by making students role-play as victims, the game increases empathy with actual victims. After a game-play session, teachers can start an open conversation about bullying and cyberbullying with students based on their shared in-game experiences. Since the game is designed to be used in the classroom as an Educational tool, it is not only important that it is effective, but also the current and future educators find it potentially applicable to their classrooms. This article presents the results of how the serious game Conectado, previously validated with students, has been tested with 93 actual teachers in eight schools and with 113 Educational Sciences students in two university centers. Conectado has been well accepted, and both teachers and students of Educational Sciences see it as a useful tool for classroom use, which can help to promote empathy with victims and raise bullying awareness among their students.
