  • protection of intellectual property in web communities by modular digital watermarking
Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2011
    Co-Authors: Svetozar Ilchev, Zlatoliliya Ilcheva
    Abstract:

In this paper, we discuss the application of digital watermarking to the protection of intellectual property rights in web communities. Some contemporary problems related to the distribution and the usage of multimedia works in web communities are described. The advantages of digital watermarking are discussed and it is explained how our new modular approach can assist in providing the community members with Effective Self-Regulation mechanisms. Two scenarios demonstrating how the legal usage of multimedia can be fostered and how legal violations can be "prevented" are presented. Taking them into consideration, a prototype digital watermarking solution is designed. Its architecture and an overview of its implementation are presented. Finally, a brief evaluation of the prototype solution is discussed as well as some possibilities for its future improvement.

  • the Effectiveness of self regulation by the private military and security industry
    Journal of Public Policy, 2010
    Co-Authors: Renée De Nevers
    Abstract:

Security is generally considered a core public good provided by the state. Since outsourcing military and security tasks erodes the state's monopoly of force, we would expect regulation in this area to be stronger than in areas that do not have potentially lethal consequences. But neither caution nor careful regulation is evident in state responses to the emergence of private military and security companies; instead, the industry's rapid growth has outpaced government efforts to control their activities. This article assesses whether two industry associations, the US-based International Peace Operations Association (IPOA) and the British Association of Private Security Companies (BAPSC), have adopted mechanisms necessary for Effective Self-Regulation, and it evaluates different national approaches to Self-Regulation. Neither the IPOA nor the BAPSC has established self-regulatory mechanisms able to monitor or sanction member companies' behavior. The IPOA's activities correspond to American patterns of Self-Regulation, while the BAPSC's efforts suggest weaker linkages with the British government than seen in other self-regulatory mechanisms.

  • (Self) Regulating War?: Voluntary Regulation and the Private Security Industry
    Security Studies, 2009
    Co-Authors: Renée De Nevers
    Abstract:

Private security companies' growing participation in U.S. and international military missions has raised concern about whether the private security industry is subject to sufficient controls. Industry Self-Regulation is often proposed as part of a multilayered framework of regulations to govern PSCs. But what can Self-Regulation contribute to regulation of the private security industry? This matters because privatization in the security realm has moved beyond understandings of the proper breakdown of public and private functions concerning the use of force. This article assesses what Self-Regulation can contribute to the control of this industry and whether the private security industry lends itself to Effective Self-Regulation. It concludes that the private security industry does not exhibit the capacity to adopt and implement Effective Self-Regulation on its own. If Self-Regulation is to complement state and international regulation, participation in the design and oversight of Self-Regulation must be b...

  • Close relationships and Self-Regulation: How relationship satisfaction facilitates momentary goal pursuit.
Journal of personality and social psychology, 2015
Co-Authors: Wilhelm Hofmann, Eli J. Finkel, Gráinne M. Fitzsimons
    Abstract:

In the new millennium, scholars have built a robust intersection between close-relationships research and Self-Regulation research. However, virtually no work has investigated how the most basic and broad indicator of relationship quality, relationship satisfaction, affects Self-Regulation and vice versa. In the present research, we show that higher relationship satisfaction promotes a motivational mind-set that is conducive for Effective Self-Regulation, and thus for goal progress and performance. In Study 1-a large-scale, intensive experience sampling project of 115 couples (total N = 230)-we closely tracked fluctuations in state relationship satisfaction (SRS) and 4 parameters of Effective Self-Regulation according to our conceptual model. Dyadic process analyses showed that individuals experiencing higher SRS than they typically do exhibited higher levels of (a) perceived control, (b) goal focus, (c) perceived partner support, and (d) positive affect during goal pursuit than they typically exhibit. Together, these 4 Self-Regulation-relevant variables translated into higher rates of daily progress on specific, idiographic goals. In Study 2 (N = 195), we employed a novel experimental manipulation of SRS, replicating the link between SRS and parameters of Effective Self-Regulation. Taken together, these findings suggest that momentary increases in relationship satisfaction may benefit everyday goal pursuit through a combination of cognitive and affective mechanisms, thus further integrating relationship research with social-cognitive research on goal pursuit.
