    Abstract:

    This study evaluated the equivalence of the original MMPI and the shortened MMPI-2 versions of the Barron (1953) Ego-Strength scale, an important research scale. Three hundred fifty-five subjects took the MMPI-2 and the 16 MMPI-1 items dropped from the original scale. The omitted items appear to contribute little to the original scale. The revised version compares favorably with the old in terms of internal consistency, and the two versions are highly intercorrelated. Confirmatory Factor Analysis indicates that four of Stein and Chu's (1967) five groupings of the original items provide a reasonably good fit for the MMPI-2 as well. Compared to the original, the new version was slightly more correlated with other paper-and-pencil measures of psychological health and well-being.

    This is the second of a series of reports on the results obtained when subjects who were grouped according to level of Ego Strength were stimulated with various intensities of sound and their skin resistance (PGR), finger blood volume (FBV), heart rate (HR), and muscle potential responses (EMG) continuously recorded. The first report dealt with differences in response magnitudes among high, middle, and low Ego Strength groups; it was predicted and in general confirmed that the higher the subjects' Ego Strength, the greater the magnitude of response on all four physiological measures. Other hypotheses tested were that stimulus intensity would be linearly related to response magnitude and that there would be differential rates of accommodation among Ego Strength groups; the former was consistently supported, the latter consistently rejected.     The main purpose of this research was to find out the mean difference between working and non working women. The total 80 women as a variation belonging to working and non working women were taken. The research tool for Ego Strength was measured by Hasan’s Ego Strength Scale and tool for anxiety were used which made by Sinha. Here t-test was applied to check the significant of in Ego Strength and Anxiety between working and non working women. To check the relation between Ego Strength and anxiety correlation method is used. The study revealed that there was significant difference between working and non working women in Ego Strength. There was significant difference between working and non working women in anxiety. While the correlation between Ego Strength and anxiety reveals 0.54 positive correlation.

  • Ego Strength Development of Adolescents Involved in Adult-Sponsored Structured Activities

    A psychosocial conception of Ego Strengths is presented in relation to adolescent involvement in adult-sponsored structured youth activities. Five-hundred and seventeen high school students completed measures on their involvement in structured activities and on 8 Ego Strengths. Gender, age, and SES were controlled in a MANCOVA procedure and it was found that extracurricular activities of sports, student government, and belonging to an issues group, as well as engagement in volunteerism were related to several of the Ego Strengths. Religious attendance was not related to the Ego Strengths. In longitudinal analysis, it was shown that Ego Strength at Time 1 predicted involvement in structured activities at Time 2 (8 months later), but structured activities at Time 1 did not predict Ego Strength at Time 2. The findings are discussed relative to theory and research findings on the topic.
