  • Experimental infection of reindeer, sheep and goats with Elaphostrongylus spp. (Nematoda, Protostrongylidae) from moose and reindeer
    Rangifer, 1998
Co-Authors: Margarets Stéen, Ibrahim Warsame, Arne Skorping
    Abstract:

Six reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), five sheep and six goats (Ovis ovis and Capra hircus) were experimentally infected with the nematode Elaphostrongylus alces. Additionally, one sheep was infected with E. rangiferi. Reindeer infected with E. alces showed no neurological signs. Sheep and goats infected with the same parasite also remained clinically healthy; however, the sheep infected with E. rangiferi showed severe neurological signs and became paralysed. Pathological lesions were minimal in reindeer and domestic ruminants infected with E. alces, but were prominent in the lamb infected with E. rangiferi. Our results indicate that keeping and transferring sheep and goats into ateas inhabited by moose, which is a natural host of E. alces may not harm the livestock, while keeping sheep in areas inhabited by reindeer infected with E. rangiferi may result in petiodic outbreaks of cerebrospinal elaphostrongylosis in sheep.

  • Cross-infection of moose (Alces alces) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) with Elaphostrongylus alces and Elaphostrongylus rangiferi (Nematoda, Protostrongylidae): effects on parasite morphology and prepatent period.
    Veterinary parasitology, 1997
    Co-Authors: M. Stéen, C.g.m. Blackmore, Arne Skorping
    Abstract:

Moose (Alces alces) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) were experimentally cross-infected with Elaphostrongylus rangiferi and Elaphostrongylus alces, respectively. Both Elaphostrongylus species completed their development in the alternate hosts but produced fewer larvae than in their usual host species. Reindeer infected with Elaphostrongylus alces developed patent infections after 39-130 days. In moose, the prepatent period of this parasite was 39-73 days. Elaphostrongylus rangiferi infections were patent in moose after 133 days. The male morphological characteristic of E. alces in moose and reindeer, and E. rangiferi in moose and their migration pattern retained regardless of the host species. These results provide further evidence that E. alces and E. rangiferi are two distinct species.

  • Experimental studies of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus): Clinical observations
    Rangifer, 1994
    Co-Authors: K. Handeland, Arne Skorping, S. Stuen, T. Slettbakk
    Abstract:

Clinical observations were made on 12 reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) experimentally infected with 200-1000 infective larvae of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi and autopsied 2.5-196 days post inoculation (p.i). Seven experimental animals autopsied later than 20 days p.i. all developed neurologic signs starting 4-8 weeks p.i. In six of these animals, signs lasted until autopsy 0-12 weeks after onset. The seventh animal recovered completely after a disease period lasting five months. A dose-response relationship between the infective dose and severity of signs was observed. Clinical signs observed in all affected animals were paraparesis, tail paresis and posterior ataxia. Other signs included lowered head, general weakness, lameness, tetraparesis, scoliosis, anal hypotonia, head and neck turn, depression and reduced vision. The prepa-tent period was 4-4.5 months.

  • Pneumonematodoses of Red Deer Population and Results of its Control in Specific Overwintering Enclosure
Univerzita Karlova Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové, 2011

    Abstract:

V průběhu zimní sezóny 2009/10 byly opakovaně zajištěny vzorky individuálních anonymních trusů, které byly larvoskopicky vyšetřeny s kvalitativním a kvantitativním vyhodnocením nálezů. K léčbě byl využit albendazol (Vermitan 20% premix, a. u. v.). V předléčebných vzorcích byla prokázána pneumonematoda Elaphostrongylus cervi a Varestrongylus sagittatus s prevalencí pozitivních průkazů 92 %, resp. 30 %. The thesis: Pneumonematodoses of red deer population and results of its control in specific overwintering enclosure Made by: Vojtěch Vávra The thesis deals with a description of specific pneumonematodoses in red deer population, held in Pádolí overwintering enclosure (Orlické hory). The thesis is also focused on nematodoses of this population present during winter season 2009/10, thein treatment (Vermitan 20% premix, a. u. v.) and evaluation of treatment efficacy. During winter season 2009/10 samples of faeces were repeatedly collected and examined larvoscopically for nematodes in a quantitative and qualitative way. In pre-treatment samples Elaphostrongylus cervi and Varestrongylus sagittatus were found with positive prevalence reaching 92 % and 30 %. Post-treatment samples also contain larvae of E. cervi and V. sagittatus, their prevalence rates are lowest shortly after treatment and rise in latter samples. The efficacy of albendazole in treating pneumonematodoses was evaluated insufficient.Katedra farmakologie a toxikologieDepartment of Pharmacology and ToxicologyFaculty of Pharmacy in Hradec KrálovéFarmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králov

Byla uskutečněna kvalitativní a kvantitativní vyšetření vzorků trusu, tj. byly získány nálezy L1 larev plicnivek rodů Elaphostrongylus cervi, Varestrongylus sagittatus a Dictyocaulus noerneri a vajíček motolice Paramphistomum cervi. V přezimovacím objektu Pádolí byly prokázány pouze L1 larvy plicnivek Elaphostrongylus cervi a Varestrongylus sagittatus.
