  • symbiotic rate adaptation for time sensitive Elastic Traffic with interactive transport
    Computer Networks, 2007
Co-Authors: Javed I Khan, Raid Zaghal
    Abstract:

Interactivity in the transport protocol can greatly benefit transport friendly applications generating streaming Traffic. Recently we have developed iTCP, which can provide event notification to the subscriber of its communication service. This is operationally state equivalent to the conventional TCP except applications can optionally subscribe, receive, and in real-time react to selected local end-point events. This simple extension opens the horizon for a spectrum of smart application level solutions to be realized for many of the current hard problems. In this paper we demonstrate a new paradigm of congestion management for time sensitive Elastic Traffic. Based on the transport layer feedback, a rate adaptation mechanism kicks in. This mechanism provides a generation rate control with guaranteed TCP buffer delay. We have recently implemented and tested the real system on the Active Network (ABone) testbed for video streaming to worldwide sites. In this paper we share the performance of this system and report observed dramatic improvements in time-bounded streaming Traffic.

  • symbiotic streaming of Elastic Traffic on interactive transport

Co-Authors: Javed I Khan, Raid Zaghal
    Abstract:

Interactivity in transport protocol can greatly benefit transport friendly applications. We envision if a transport mechanism, which is interactive and can provide event notification about network state to the subscriber of its communication service, than a wide range of solution to many of today's hard network problem can be instituted. Recently we have implemented this concept system as a new TCP kernel on FreeBSD called TCP interactive and a novel symbiotic MPEG-2 full logic transcoder. In this paper we share the results of the TCP interactive performance experiment and show potential dramatic improvement in time-bounded video delivery.

  • Dynamic Transport Enhancement for Time Elastic Traffic with Transientware
    2003
Co-Authors: Javed I Khan, Raid Zaghal
    Abstract:

The paper presents the concept of transientware—a mechanism by which sensitive applications can launch application level targeted and dynamically adaptive enhancements of transport service. The proposed transientware can be used with current transport protocols with interactivity enhancement. As a proof of concept we have recently designed and implemented a functionally enriched transientware enabled TCP on FreeBSD Unix. We then show the performance of a TCP friendly adaptive MPEG-2 video transcoder, which can directly interact with this transport and adjust its outgoing video rate to satisfy temporal quality constraint of the stream via a dynamic rate adaptive scheme. We report potential dramatic improvement in time-bounded video delivery of Elastic Traffic from live experiment.

  • WCNC - Semi-distributed radio resource management for Elastic Traffic in a hybrid network
2012 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 2012
Co-Authors: Kinda Khawam, Johanne Cohen, Dana Marinca, Samir Tohme
    Abstract:

Owing to the proliferation of different Radio Access Technologies (RAT) in the same operating area, a mobile user is capable of connecting concomitantly to diverse wireless networks in order to meet more easily its target performance. In this paper, we consider the downlink of a multi-class hybrid network with two RATs: WiMAX and 3G LTE. We put forward a semi-distributed Radio Resource Management (RRM) scheme for Elastic Traffic where both the system and mobile users intervene in the resource management policy. The proposed scheduling scheme is original in the sense that users with Elastic Traffic have a counterintuitive behavior: they will try to occupy the least amount possible of bandwidth to accommodate QoS stringent streaming Traffic. A non-cooperative game is used to load balance the Traffic of Elastic users between the two available RATs aiming at minimizing their bandwidth consumption. We characterize the Nash Equilibriums (NE) of the RRM game and study the efficiency of a best response algorithm to achieve those equilibriums. Moreover, we propose a fully decentralized algorithm based on replicator dynamics to attain NEs. The system role is to apply an admission control algorithm that limits the number of ongoing connections so that Elastic Traffic is sustained with a guaranteed minimal rate.

  • network centric joint radio resource policy in heterogeneous wimax umts networks for streaming and Elastic Traffic
Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2009
Co-Authors: Marc Ibrahim, Kinda Khawam, Samir Tohme
    Abstract:

The convergence of wireless networks is a key solution to deal with the ever-increasing need for bandwidth. In this compound radio environment, users can use concurrently diverse services through multiple RATs. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous network where cells include two co-localized Radio Access Technologies (RAT): WiMAX and UMTS. The predominance of these systems in nowadays mobile networks underlines the relevance of our choice. We consider the downlink channel for both RATs and two service classes: streaming and Elastic Traffic. We propose a Joint Radio Resource Management (JRRM) algorithm responsible of routing every arriving user to one of the two RATs, while taking into account the load of each RAT, the spatial distribution of already accepted users, the location of the newly admitted user, and its influence on global performance. In a study based on the Semi Markov Decision Process (SMDP) theory, we show how to obtain an optimal policy that maximizes a predefined reward function accounting for both the operator and user satisfaction. In fact, the reward function consists of a financial gain component, an aggregate throughput component and a blocking cost.

  • GLOBECOM - Traffic engineering with Elastic Traffic
2013 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM), 2013
Co-Authors: Chiun Lin Lim, Ao Tang
    Abstract:

In the network layer, an internet service provider controls the Traffic across an autonomous system by load balancing via Traffic engineering and by varying the offered Traffic of the users via feedback signals. In the transport layer, users send Traffic into the network using the TCP protocol, which adjusts offered Traffic according to the received feedback. We investigate how feedback and current Traffic engineering practice interact with congestion control under the network utility maximization framework. We show that the current interaction is stable, increases network utility, but does not necessarily improve the Traffic engineering objective. The mismatch in outcome and incentives prompt us for a more holistic view using game theory. With suitable modification of the feedback, we show that the interaction converges to a socially optimal solution for users running either primal or dual algorithms. We further show that the results hold even when Traffic engineering is performed at any irregular intervals. More generally, we show via heterogeneous feedback the same optimality result for a mix of users running primal and dual algorithms.

  • SpringSim - Weighted start-time fair queuing: a new start-time fair queuing for Elastic Traffic
    2009
    Co-Authors: Ehsan Allahyar, Ali Movaghar
    Abstract:

In this paper, we present a new Start-time Fair Queuing (SFQ) algorithm called Weighted Start-time Fair Queuing (WSFQ) which is more efficient and achieves better fairness than SFQ in the presence of small and huge Elastic Traffic flows. WSFQ scheduler, like SFQ uses a start time eligibility criterion to select packets and when the start-time of two packets in two flows are the same, it acts like Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) which selects the smallest virtual finish time first. Afterward, we compared the performance of our model with that of the applied scheduling algorithms such as First-In-First-Out (FIFO), SFQ as well as WFQ on the end-to-end delay and the throughput in small and large-scale networks. Our analysis demonstrates that our proposed model is suitable for Elastic services networks since it achieves low end-to-end delay for Elastic applications as well as providing fairness which is desirable for Elastic Traffic regardless of variation in one misbehaving flow.
