  • Skill Improvement Needs of Electrical Installation Trade Teachers in Technical Colleges for Productive Employment

    Abstract:

    The research sought to identify the skill improvement needs of Electrical Installation trade teachers in technical colleges for productive employment. A structured questionnaire was the instrument adopted to elicit data from the respondents. The population of the study consisted of sixty three (63) teachers currently teaching in technical colleges in Ebonyi State school system. No sampling was done because of the relative small size of the teachers’ population. The data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that teachers need to update their pedagogical skills in planning curriculum, instructional objectives and evaluation in Electrical Installation trade teaching. The teachers also need to improve their teaching prowess by partaking in in-service trainings to update their competencies aimed at up skilling technical college students to enable them adjust to the world of paid employment or self reliance on graduation.   • Teachers' and Students' Perception of Instructional Supervision on Capacity Building in Electrical Installation Trade

    Abstract:

    This research was conducted to ascertain teachers’ and students perception of instructional supervision in relation to capacity building in Electrical Installation trade in technical colleges. Three research questions and a null hypothesis were employed to guide the study. Descriptive survey was adopted. A 23-item questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the teachers and students made up of 10 and 76 respondents respectively. The research questionnaire items were analyzed through descriptive statistics while the hypothesis was tested with the t-test statistic. Major findings of study revealed discrepancies between teachers and students perception on some vital issues of instructional supervision such as the method of supervision that affect enhancement of capacity building in Electrical Installation trade. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teachers of Electrical Installation trade should strive to develop co-operative partnership epitomized in trust and descriptive feedback during instructional supervision for capacity building.   • Promoting Entrepreneurship Education Skills in Electrical Installation for Sustainable Development

    Abstract:

    The Paper discussed the promotion of entrepreneurship education skills in Electrical Installation for sustainable development. Graduates from various institutions face skill opportunities of securing employment including those that studied Electrical Installation maintenance work. Entrepreneurship was discussed as a panacea that would enable the graduates learn skills that would make them survive by establishing Electrical Installation related enterprises for sustainable economic development. Some factors that would promote entrepreneurship education include adequate provision of fund to establish entrepreneurial education system, revitalization of electricity supplies and expansion of educational facilities for entrepreneurial development. Entrepreneurship competences identified for sustainable development among Electrical Installation graduates include managerial, accounting, marketing and competition skills. The paper also identified concrete reasons for entrepreneurship education to include provision of necessary skills, ability of students to transit from school to work among others. When entrepreneurship education is promoted, sustainable development will be feasible.

  • Constructing a framework in applying psychomotor domain model for Electrical Installation workshop course

    Abstract:

    Hands–on workshop course is an important component of Electrical engineering and Electrical engineering technology education in developing the students’ psychomotor skills. It is therefore, very crucial for the engineering course to be properly designed with proper learning outcomes and with appropriate teaching and assessment strategies. The research presents a framework in implementing an Electrical Installation Workshop course by applying a psychomotor domain model for the diploma level course at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. In this research, the learning outcomes applied in producing the framework was referred to the National Skills Standard as a benchmark. A qualitative method was employed in this research whereby, it included exploring and investigating the implementation of the course in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as well as in other higher education providers (HEPs) in collecting the intended data. The data were collected through documents, interviews, and observations of the students’ works. The data obtained were then analyzed by comparing it with the National Standard and with thirteen other HEPs data. Psychomotor domain models were also compared to the data found in this research especially to the implementation of this course at thirteen other HEPs. The findings showed that there were significant differences in the learning outcomes, teaching and assessment strategies in implementation of the Diploma Electrical Installation Workshop course conducted at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia compared to other HEPs. It was also found that the Romiszwoski psychomotor domain model with the five levels of mastering the skills is deemed suitable to be applied in the teaching of the Electrical Installation Workshop course in developing students’ technical skills.

    Abstract:

    Currently in the business world a fundamental element is the management of human talent in organizations, it is sought that workers have key skills for companies to be competitive. The different educational models of several countries implement the concept of competency-based training, with the aim of training people with certain job skills, which enable better adaptation and integration into the world of work. The present work have as objective to know and analyze the training and professional development of teachers of Electrical Installation Technology to contribute to the improvement of the management of the educational process in the formation of labor competencies in students of skilled worker in Electrical Installations. Using a qualitative methodology a descriptive study; the questionnaire facilitated the collection of data. It was found the dissatisfaction of teachers in terms of the training received. Similarly, it was found that the continuing education activities contribute to the improvement of the management of the educational process and professional development of teachers, however, there are factors that limit the work in collaboration, as well as, the needs of teachers for the improvement of the management of the educational process in the formation of labor competencies in students of technical and vocational education
