  • gender inequalities in the new World of Work
Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research, 2017
    Co-Authors: Agnieszka Piasna, Jan Drahokoupil
    Abstract:

Digitalisation, automation and technological change have brought about shifts in the occupational structure, the place and the timing of Work, and career patterns, putting a further strain on the standard employment relationship. In the recent research on digitalisation, scant attention has however been paid to the gender impact of these changes. This article addresses this gap by developing a gender perspective on digitalisation, considering how these developments interact with existing social inequalities and gender segregation patterns in the labour market. We identify two broad areas in which digitalisation has thus far had a pronounced effect on employment: the structure of employment (including occupational change and the task content of jobs) and forms of Work (including employment relationships and Work organisation). We find that, despite the profound changes in the labour market, traditional gender inequalities continue to reassert themselves on many dimensions. With standard employment declinin...

We find that, despite the profound changes in the labour market, traditional gender inequalities continue to reassert themselves in many dimensions. With standard employment declining in significance, the policy challenge is to include new forms of Work in effective labour protection frameWorks that promote equal access of women and men to quality jobs and their equal treatment at Work.

  • Competences and Competence Development in a Digitalized World of Work
Advances in Human Factors and Systems Interaction, 2019
Co-Authors: Walter Ganz, Bernd Dworschak, Kathrin Schnalzer
    Abstract:

Ongoing digitalization opens up major opportunities for companies. Yet this process poses more than just a technical challenge. It is also reshaping the way Work and decision-making are divided up between humans and machines, thereby requiring new competences from employees. Various scenarios sketch out future paths of development for technology, Work organization, and the requisite competences. This paper elucidates the current state of research on digitalization and its impact on the World of Work and competences requirements in Germany. It illustrates – both in general terms and on the basis of specific examples – the kind of (digital) competences that will be increasingly required in tomorrow’s Workplace.

  • shaping the World of Work in the digital economy
    Social Science Research Network, 2017
    Co-Authors: Christophe Degryse
    Abstract:

For better or worse, the digitalisation of the economy has become an unavoidable theme in political and social debates. This new industrial revolution is predicted to disrupt the processes of production, the World of Work and society at large. How can we prepare for this and how can we anticipate its effects? In June 2016, the ETUI’s three-day conference in Brussels brought together the best experts on social issues related to the digitalisation of the economy, a theme that is still difficult to grasp in terms of its specific implications. In dedicating its first issue to this conference and its conclusions, this Foresight Brief offers more than a mere summary of the debates. It instead aims to draw out vital points concerning the strategic challenges that we believe the World of Work faces in this new ‘digital revolution’.

    2009
    Co-Authors: Danielle De ,oliveira
    Abstract:

___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis dissertation analyses the World of Work for men and women residing in Distrito Federal (DF) with permanent ostomy, with a main focus on disability, given that ostomy has been recognized as a physical disability, due to the bowel incontinence, by the Decree 5.296, of 2 December, 2004. Living in a society that subjugates and segregates disabled people, users of ostomy pouches to feces elimination are discriminated and eventually face socially imposed disabilities when dissociated from the attributes of a productive, capitalist society; such as independence, efficiency, and productivity. This study aimed to analyze the reasons why men and women with permanent ostomy do not return to the World of Work and to determine if the observed behavior is gender specific. This qualitative based research made use of close-ended questionnaires to establish the profile of people with permanent ostomy in addition to the use of in-depth interviews that aimed to explore their World of Work. For the in-depth interview, an accidental sample was defined by choosing men and women with permanent ostomy or ostomy and urostomy for one year or more, excluding the ones retired in the occasion of the ostomy and according to the legal Working age in Brazil. The gathered data has been examined by using content analysis techniques. Studying the universe of people with permanent ostomy means becoming familiar and recognizing situations of social and economical inequalities that are influenced by the stigmatization process related to income, educational level as well as to World of Work. A positive appreciation of the individuals in their domestic environment has been observed after the permanent ostomy was performed. It was also observed that the ostomized people did not return to the formal World of Work
