    Scholars have long noted the significant impact of general purpose technologies (GPTs) on the economy. However, limited attention has been paid to exploring how they are employed to generate inventions in downstream sectors (crossover inventions), and what factors may facilitate such diffusion. In a study of the introduction of Electrical Technology in the late-nineteenth-century United States, we find that knowledge spillovers between industries had little influence on the geography of crossover inventions as well as the speed and productivity of crossover inventors. Instead, human capital and an environment promoting inventions in general were more important.

    Abstract:

We study these issues by examining the introduction of one of the widely regarded GPTs -- Electrical Technology -- in the late 19th century U.S. We find that knowledge spillovers between industries (inter-industry spillovers and learning-by-using) had little influence on the geography of crossover inventions as well as the speed and productivity of inventors at making them. Instead, appropriate human capital and an environment promoting inventions in general played a more important role.

  • Conceptual model for the integration of personal attribute skills in Electrical Technology education curriculum

    Abstract:

    The current curriculum of Electrical Technology Education (ETE) of Nigerian Universities has been criticized for not meeting the desired challenges. The personal attribute skills were found are not integrated in the curriculum. Hence, a study was conducted to determine the types of personal attribute skills, their respective indicators and to develop a conceptual model for the integration of personal attribute skills for ETE curriculum. Mixed methods exploratory research design was employed for the study. 10 industry technical managers were interviewed and the interview data were analyzed using coding process of open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The interview data were used to develop a structured questionnaire that validated by 4 experts. Alpha value for pilot test was 0.89. Sample of the survey were 646 including 528 ETE graduates, 22 ETE lecturers and 96 industry technical managers. Stepwise Linear Regression and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were used to analyze the survey. The study developed a conceptual model for the integration of personal attribute skills that consists of two major skills: attitude skills and trait skills. This study recommended the implementation of the conceptual model for the integration of employability skills in ETE curriculum.

    Abstract:

    The contemporary Electrical Technology Education (ETE) curriculum of Nigerian technological universities has been cross-examined for not generating employable graduates.  The curriculum gives less importance to effective integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) courses due to lack of framework that can guide its implementation.  Hence, t he purpose of this empirical paper was to develop a framework for the integration of STEAM skills in Electrical Technology education curriculum.  The research was designed to determine the best STEAM skills and their respective elements.  Mixed methods exploratory research design was employed for this study.  10 industry technical managers were interviewed.  The interview data were analyzed by using coding process starting with open coding followed by axial coding to selective coding.  The interview results were used to develop structured questionnaire.  The questionnaire was validated by 4 experts and its reliability was established through pilot study.  The sample of the survey was 646 including 528 ETE Graduates, 22 ETE Lecturers and 96 Industry Technical Managers.  Stepwise linear regression was used to analyze the survey.  The study developed the framework for the integration of STEAM skills including comprehension of STEAM , application of STEAM and evaluation of STEAM . T he researcher recommended the implementation of the framework for the integration of STEAM skills in ETE curriculum.

    Abstract:

    Abstract In the 21st century, employability skill is the most required skill besides technical knowledge in an attempt to compete for employment and sustain job at the industrial global market. However, Nigerian TVET graduates are not equipped with the employability skills needed by the industries and as a result, they are not ready to enter into workforce. This concept paper is written to discuss how the curriculum of one of TVET programmes at the Federal Universities of Technology in Nigeria, which is Electrical Technology Education has contributed to this issue. Analytical review on Electrical Technology Education programme curriculum showed that the curriculum gave less attention to practice based courses that provide skills of the programme than theory based courses and no course in the programme curriculum that directly teaches good attitudes and traits. As a result, there is lack of incorporation of employability skills such as Problem solving and decision making, Lifelong learning and Competencies amongst the graduates. Other issues discussed are the need of employability skills in TVET curriculum of Nigeria, employability skills, Electrical Technology Education in Nigeria, and the analysis of Electrical Technology Education curriculum in Nigeria The last part of this paper is recommendation for the curriculum of Electrical Technology Education to be designed with equal number of theory and practice courses by giving emphasize on all eleven generic skills, good traits and attitudes.

  • Soft Skills Needed by Electrical Technology Students for 21st Century Jobs

    Abstract:

    The study investigated the rise in the rate of unemployment among Electrical Technology graduates from Colleges of Education in Nigeria despite the huge government investment in power and education sectors. The study is a qualitative study which involve a survey of literature and interview protocol. This study is designed to determine the employability skills needed by Electrical Technology students in Colleges of Education qualitatively with the aimed of suggesting a departure from the general framework available to all disciplines. A review of journal articles and policy documents on Employability skills and Electrical Technology was conducted, leading to the interview data that was conducted among 6 employers of labour and 4 Senior Academic staff in the four Colleges of Education that have Electrical Technology programme in South Western Nigeria.  The study revealed that there is a skill mismatch between Colleges of Education in Nigeria and the labour market. Thus, the students lack the skills for 21st-Century jobs.  The two results were integrated to come up with a Framework of employability for Electrical Technology students in Colleges of Education in Nigeria. The study observed that the framework developed was still broad and therefore recommends a valid discipline-difference employability skill framework using Rasch Analysis Model to determine the competencies and its hierarchy.

    Abstract:

    The rate of unemployment among youths in Nigeria has assumed a worrisome dimension. More importantly that those affected are specialized graduates from tertiary institutions.  The youth unemployment rate has been of persitent increase since 2014 from from 11.7% to 36.5% in 2018. It has been established that the vacancies exists, but the graduates lack the skills to match the jobs. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to identify the constructs and sub-constructs of employability skills that are needed to match Electrical Technology students with the labour market. The resaerch  design is a qualitative metthod involving document analysis and interview protocol of stakeholders in Electrical Technology. The stakehoders were the academics and the employers. The documents were analysed using frequency matrix table. While the interview of the stakeholders (experts) were done thematically. To ensure the reliability of the constructs and sub-constructs, an item pool was constructed to determine the agreement and content reliability index for the constructs. From the item pool, 5 constructs and 193 sub-constructs were generated. These were constructed into instrument for expert review. Three experts in Electrical Technology rated the instrument for determining the aggreement level, using the Fleiss kappa approach. The percent agreement for the raters are 89.63%, 86.01%, and 81.86% respectively with a mean agreement of 85.83%. The 85.83% indicate an almost perfect agreement by the experts for each of the constructs in the instrument. This is very good for producing a functional framework of employability skills.

  • RASCH ANALYSIS OF THE EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS FOR Electrical Technology STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

    Abstract:

    The study was guided by three research questions.  The two results from the document analysis and interview were triangulated to generate the Interim framework of employability skills.  To narrow the framework to meet the specific needs of Electrical Technology students in Colleges of Education,  an item pool was designed to be able to survey the agreement index level of  Electrical Technology experts. The Fleiss Kappa agreement ratio conducted gave 89.63%, 86.01%, and 81.86% respectively with a mean agreement of 85.83%. The 85.83% represents an ‘almost perfect agreement’ which is very good for producing a functional and narrow framework of employability skills (Jollands, 2015).  The Winstep analysis gave the following results: item separation = 2.18, reliability = .83. the person separation = 3.85, and the person reliability = .94. Cronbach Alpha = .95. The result indicates three levels of the item. The most difficult items moderate, and the less difficult items.
