    Over the past five years, the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s Electronic Chart Testbed has provided insights into the way an Electronic Chart (EC) will handle Chart data — and from this the appropriate form for the Hydrographic Office to provide and Electronic Chart database; it has stimulated suggestions about how the display should be designed; it has provided a practical model for use in planning IHO specifications — and followed on to test these by implementing them; and it has shared in giving mariners demonstrations of some of the eventual capabilities of ECDIS, so that they can start thinking about what they need from it. This paper describes planning the Testbed; lessons from early tests; initial ideas on Electronic Chart data and on display design; and the reactions from mariners who saw the Testbed among six Electronic Charts on board the Norwegian ship LANCE during the 1988 North Sea Project.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) contributes to safe navigation by enabling the mariner to follow a planned route precisely, using positioning and radar information integrated on an Electronic Chart. The need to ensure that ECDIS is safe to use has prompted the development of performance standards for the presentation of information on Electronic Charts. As a step in working towards these presentation standards, user trials were conducted on shore and at sea using an ECDIS display to investigate presentation issues, which included colour combinations and symbols for ships and tracks, Chart features, radar overlays, scale indicators and also display brightness for day and night viewing. Results of questionnaires indicated mariners' preferences and rated visibility of various colours and symbols. As a result of the shore trials, improvements were made to some of the symbols, which were then reevaluated during sea trials. Changes to the colours and symbols resulting from these trials will be included in the International Hydrographic Organization's Provisional Colour and Symbol Standards for ECDIS.

    With the progression of sea exploration and offshore engineering, Electronic Charts have come to see widespread use in many intelligent applications. Like other digital products, Electronic Charts are easy to duplicate and distribute. Some watermarking solutions have proven defective to prevent copying of Electronic Charts because it’s as easy to forge as it is to redistribute. If the problems of copyright infringement cannot be solved, the creation of these Electronic Charts will be limited. The most important characteristic of Electronic Charts is the topological relationships among vertices, but few algorithms can control this feature. A new watermarking algorithm is here proposed as a means of copyright protection, in which the watermarks will be hosted in the Electronic Chart by taking into account the preservation of the topology. Sometimes, additional vertices are inserted into the middle of two adjacent vertices, sometimes not, which are governed by the value of the watermark. Experiments show that the improved algorithm is better than similar algorithms; it was found to resist geometric attacks and format exchange attacks.
