    Abstract:

    Over the past few years, various Electronic Market systems have been introduced by Market-making firms to improve transaction effectiveness and efficiency within their Markets. Although successful implementation of Electronic Marketplaces may be found in several industries, some systems have failed or their penetration pace is slower than was projected, indicating that significant barriers remain. This paper analyzes the economic forces and barriers behind the Electronic Market adoptions from the perspective of Market process reengineering. Four cases of Electronic Market adoptions--two successful and two failed--are used for this analysis. Economic benefits are examined by investigating how the Market process innovation enabled by information technology (IT) reduces transaction costs and increases Market efficiency. Adoption barriers are identified by analyzing transaction risks and resistance resulting from the reengineering. Successful deployment of Electronic Market systems requires taking into account these barriers along with the economic benefits of adoption. The paper presents suggestions based on these case studies, which are relevant to the analysis, design, and implementation of Electronic Market systems by Market-making firms.

    Electronic Markets have become increasingly popular alternatives to traditional Market forms over the last few years. This article explains how Electronic Markets can be used either to create new Markets or to strengthen existing Markets, and provides examples of the impact alternative Electronic Market applications can have on firm competitiveness and Market structures. The central claim of this article is that it is necessary to analyze the impact of Electronic Market implementation on search, price discovery, and trade settlement in order to understand the impact of the Electronic Marketplace on firms and Markets. Two forms of Electronic Marketplaces-Electronic brokerage and Electronic auction--are examined from the perspective of fundamental economic factors that influence total transactions costs and the efficiency of alternative Market structures. Social and organizational barriers to successful adoption of Electronic Markets are also discussed.

    Abstract:

    Great progress has been made over the past few years in the study of the impact of IT on inter-firm trade relationships and Markets. Most works in this area focus on firm boundaries (purchasing or outsourcing) or buyer-seller relations in general. Although these works are based on reasonable theoretical grounding and many of them have been tested empirically, they do not provide a complete explanation for why different forms of Electronic Markets have emerged. This article identifies two types of Electronic Markets-Electronic brokerage and Electronic auction-by investigating the impact of IT on transaction costs (search, coordination and trade settlement costs) under four different Market structures. The economic forces behind the introduction of Electronic Marketplaces, which either change or support existing Market structures, are analyzed along these two Market dimensions. Social and organizational barriers to successful implementation of Electronic Market systems are also discussed.

  • Cost optimization in persistent virtual world design

    Abstract:

    Abstract Virtual world has the potential to become a future global Electronic Market, integrating many isolated Markets in many areas. To achieve this goal, future virtual world is required to be persistent, which means that a virtual world together with its accumulated content shall exist forever regardless of the dynamic changes of its virtual world users and virtual world owners. This paper addresses the content-level persistence issue by proposing a persistence framework which consists of three elements: existence, availability, and sufficiency. Following the framework, a decentralized redundancy model is then proposed, which is immune from the possible collapse of virtual world. The key problem in the model is the selection of a redundancy level, which is based on cost optimization. Furthermore, the replica failure timeout mechanism is introduced to improve the model. The simulation results show that the redundancy model helps improve content availability and minimizes cost.

    Abstract:

    There is an increasing demand for doing business online, which calls for higher business interoperability on business-to-business (B2B) Electronic Market places (EMp). This drives the development of integration technologies for improving B2B Electronic Market (EM) functions on EMp. This paper argues that with the development of integration technologies companies will use more private, community and public EMp and select their proper type of EMp when comparing the function-cost ratios of business interoperability on different types of B2B EMp. This argument has been validated through the case studies against a method of historical event analysis. In this shift, four integration factors of standard flexibility, enterprise integration, service provision and semantic integration are constantly improving EMp functions, which lead to an overall reduction of interaction cost for business interoperation on all types of EMp. This will change business behaviour and corporate strategies of most firms, and have important implications for firms to make strategies of how to select EMp to increase business interoperability for higher competitiveness.

    Proposes a new decentralized architecture for Electronic Markets, called Digiket (DIGItal Market), as an alternative to traditional virtual malls. The present Internet commerce consists of relatively small closed Markets; so, new frameworks that enable Web-based stores and malls to share their services worldwide are strongly desired. Digiket separates Electronic commerce functions (such as content authoring, catalog delivery, intermediary services, shopping assistants and transaction processing) from traditional mall sites, and decentralizes each of them independently. Digiket's architecture is unique in that it requires no central coordinators for the distributed components. Instead, the PCO (Portable Compound Object) language, a lingua franca for Digiket, connects the components to each other. We have also implemented the PCO language and a user agent client named OpenBasket, to demonstrate a shopping application on Digiket. The demonstration shows that a consumer can order arbitrary goods described in PCO without vendor barriers.

The authors analyze a new data set: the eSpeed Electronic Treasury network. They contrast the Market microstructure of the eSpeed trading platform with the traditional voice-assisted networks that report through GovPX.     This article reviews the history of the recent shift to Electronic trading in equity, foreign ex- change and fixed-income Markets. We analyze a new data set: the eSpeed (Cantor Fitzgerald) Electronic Treasury network. We contrast the Market microstructure of eSpeed with the tradi- tional voice assisted networks that report through GovPX. The Electronic Market (eSpeed) has greater volume, smaller spreads and a lower estimated impact of a trade than the voice Market (GovPX).
