    Abstract:

    Modern Trading technology clashes with the traditional organization of a stock exchange, where transactions were consummated via face-to-face negotiation. The modern Trading facility is no longer a place. Rather, it is a computer system over which transactions are entered, routed, executed and cleared Electronically with little or no human intervention. In this article, I examine how Electronic Trading has altered stock markets. I begin with an overview of how the stock Trading process works and then address a number of questions. How have the jobs of traditional stock market dealers on the NYSE and on Nasdaq been affected by Electronic Trading? How do Electronic communications networks differ from traditional markets? How has Electronic Trading affected bid-ask spreads and commission costs? What subtle issues arise in Electronic Trading when dealer and customer interests diverge? Will computer programs replace human judgment? What is the effect of Electronic Trading on the number and types of securities markets? What is the role of regulation in Electronic markets?

  • MAgNET: mobile agents for networked Electronic Trading

    Abstract:

    Electronic commerce technology offers the opportunity to integrate and optimize the global production and distribution supply chain. The computers of the various corporations, located throughout the world, will communicate with each other to determine the availability of components, to place and confirm orders, and to negotiate delivery timescales. We describe MAgNet, a system for networked Electronic Trading that is based on the Java mobile agent technology, called aglets. Aglets are dispatched by the buyer to the various suppliers, where they negotiate orders and deliveries, returning to the buyer with their best deals for approval. MAgNET handles the deep supply chain, where a supplier may need to contact further suppliers of subcomponents in order to respond to an enquiry. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of using the Java aglet technology for Electronic commerce.

    This paper presents several market-based techniques for road traffic coordination. In particular, the question is addressed how to make it more attractive for traffic individuals to follow the suggestions of a coordination system. The presented techniques share a common principle: Drivers participate in a voluntary pool of users into which they pay and from which they receive money according to their usage of roads. The amount of payment is determined by a predefined Electronic Trading mechanism and the individual Trading behavior of respective software units representing each individual driver. This paper compares three different Trading mechanisms. The presented techniques are advantageous for the applications dynamic route assignment and individual road clearance.

    Abstract This paper suggests to use market-based techniques for road traffic coordination. In particular, the question is addressed how to make it more attractive for traffic individuals to follow the suggestions of a coordination system. The presented techniques share a common principle: drivers participate in a voluntary pool of users. They pay into this pool or receive money from this pool according to their usage of the roads. The amount of payment is determined by a predefined Electronic Trading procedure in which each driver participates by an automated software unit representing the individual driver’s intentions. This paper compares three different Trading mechanisms. The presented techniques are advantageous for the applications dynamic route assignment and individual road clearance . Compared to traditional traffic demand management systems, market-based techniques are expected to have a higher degree of flexibility and adaptability. Another advantage is that market-based techniques are independent of a prior set-up of traffic models and analyses.

    Abstract:

    Although researchers agree about the importance of information technology (IT), there remains considerable debate as to the nature of its long-term impact. Growing interest in EDI and inter-organizational systems (IOS) highlights the paradoxical nature of IT, one fundamental problem being the precise definition of the terms we employ to understand the complex phenomenon of systems in use. We suggest that a non-restrictive term such as 'Electronic Trading' may better capture the nature of systems used in an inter-organizational context because it focuses attention on the purpose of these systems, i.e. to improve and extend communications between organizations. This paper outlines the growing importance of Electronic Trading systems with particular reference to the retail supply chain. It attempts to link some of the IOS literature with the growing interest in inter-organizational communications and relationship management. The basic contention is that the diffusion of Electronic Trading technology and the implications of the technology in use may be enriched by acknowledging the value of complementary research traditions, in particular research that focuses on the nature of buyer-seller relationships from a network perspective.
