    Abstract:

    Requirements monitors provide high-level feedback on software usage in real-time. Herein, we show how low-level monitoring can identify behavioral transitions that can be interpreted as learning transitions by a post-clinical team. One monitoring technique is to apply stochastic modeling to the software's event stream. Herein, we show how dynamically generated hidden Markov models (HMMs) characterize sequence patterns in a software's user-interface event-stream. We show how this is used to dynamically model a user's usage of an Emailing Application. By differencing the resulting sequence of generated HMMs, the technique can identify transitions in software usage. This is important for identifying usage transitions, which occur with user learning. Herein, we show how the approach applies to monitoring an Email Application that has been simplified for users having cognitive impairments. The identified transitions provide the post-clinical team feedback on a user's Emailing progress. The team then uses the feedback to make adjustments to the Emailing environment to further aid learning.

    Abstract:

    Current estimates suggest widespread adoption of open source software (OSS) in organizations worldwide. However, the problematic nature of OSS adoption is readily evidenced in the fairly frequent reports of problems, unforeseen hold-ups, and outright abandonment of OSS implementation over time. Hibernia Hospital, an Irish public sector organization, have embarked on the adoption of a range of OSS Applications over several years, some of which have been successfully deployed and remain in live use within the organisation, whereas others, despite achieving high levels of assimilation over a number of years, have not been ultimately retained in live use in the organization. Using a longitudinal case study, we discuss in depth the deployment process for two OSS Applications – the desktop Application suite whose deployment was unsuccessful ultimately, and the Email Application which was successfully deployed. To our knowledge, this is the first such in-depth study into successful and unsuccessful OSS implementation.

  • A novel spell checking algorithm for non-segmented languages

    Abstract:

    This work describes for the first time a novel approach to implementing a successful spell checker for non-segmented languages such as Chinese. The design combines a novel technique that we call First Character Identifier Approach (FCIA). FCIA elegantly side steps the widely reported problem of how to segment text into words in a timely fashion. It does this by using a list of incorrectly spelt words to search for word matches in the text using the first character of the incorrect word. The design has been successfully implemented into a children’s Email Application that can be downloaded from http://www.mifrenz.com.

  • Cost effective software internationalisation

    Abstract:

    This paper describes the design and implementation of a method for allowing the user interface of a software Application to be translated by the end user into any other language. It is proposed that if used by the software industry this technique will increase the availability of software to minority groups. The research involved the modification of an existing Email Application for children (www.mifrenz.com) by providing a tool for parents to modify the pre-installed translations created using automated translation tools. Standard software internationalisation techniques available with modern programming languages were extensively used. This work resulted in a fully implemented product that has been sold in 11 countries and has confirmed usage in Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish, and English. It is concluded that with the advent of automated translation tools and giving the end user the ability to modify the translation, as described in this paper, means that it is now possible for all software to be delivered with any interface language at a minimal cost.

    Mifrenz is a safe Email Application for children (http://www.mifrenz.com) that was, like most similar products, originally created with an English only user interface (UI). After receiving market interest for a Portuguese version, it was decided to internationalize the software in a way that would allow the user interface to display any language that a user desired, rather than the normal approach to internationalization that just provides for a limited selection of languages. Java resource bundles and locales were used to allow dynamic selection of the desired UI language at run time. A combination of automated translation and human correction were used to provide initial UI files for the main languages of the world. To provide a fully generalized solution, a tool was created and integrated into the software to allow parents to modify the default language files or to create completely new translations of the UI. The work has resulted in a truly flexible Application that has the ability to bring safe Email to kids no matter what language they speak. Written in Java, the software is available for both Windows and Apple Mac computers and is a unique example of Java being used to internationalize a children's Email Application.

    This paper describes the incorporation of Universal Unique Identifiers (UUIDs) into the database design for a children’s Email Application. Implementation of the new design is described including the mechanism for sharing data between installations using an IMAP based Email server. Testing of the software has demonstrated that the design results in a functional distributed Application although there remains scope for improving the synchronization algorithm.   • Natural or artificial primary key? Using the Mifrenz children’s Email Application as a case study

    Abstract:

    The choice of primary key (PK) for a database relation (table) is an important concept that students need to grasp. The standard process that is taught to students, centres on the concept of looking at the data requirements and choosing a PK based on the natural data. Yet, there is much debate in industry with respect to the use of natural or artificial data for a primary key with the consensus seeming to favour the use of an artificial key. This debate is unfortunately not reflected in the peer reviewed academic literature. This seems to direct the lecturer to a “do as I say, not what ‘they’ do” approach. This paper gives a worked example of designing a database for an Email Application (Mifrenz), that the author was able to use to demonstrate to students an example where the use of natural data seemed to be the most appropriate solution.
