  • Evaluation of waste Embankment Slope stability: Valea Manastirii, Gorj, Romania
Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment, 2005
    Co-Authors: Mihaela Stanciucu
    Abstract:

One of the largest mining waste deposits in Romania is in the Montru valley where coal has been exploited for many years. The waste Embankment is 60 m high and covers an area of 6 km^2 . In March 2000 a large landslip occurred with lateral movement in the order of 30 to 50 m which resulted in the blocking of the River Montru. The slip surface extended downwards into the Pliocene deposits beneath the river floor. The paper describes the investigations undertaken to assess the short and long term stabilty of the waste Embankment.

  • Effectiveness of vetiver root in Embankment Slope protection: Bangladesh perspective
International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 2013
Co-Authors: Mohammad Shariful Islam, Arifuzzaman, H Md. Shahin, S Nasrin
    Abstract:

AbstractBangladesh, a country of many rivers and a very long coastline, is frequented by natural disasters due to its unique geological location. As the Embankments, river banks, and other hydraulic structures act as the first line of defense against storm surges and floods, they experience the most severe damage. Protection of these Embankments is, therefore, of paramount importance. Recently, many countries are effectively using naturally grown vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) to protect the Embankment Slopes. In this paper, the effectiveness of vetiver root in stabilizing Embankment Slopes in the context of Bangladesh has been explored. A device has been developed to determine in situ shear strength of the vetiver rooted soil matrix. It is found that the shear strength of vetiver rooted soil matrix is about 2·0 times higher at the same time sustaining almost eightfold larger deformation than that of the unreinforced soil. Again, the effective soil cohesion of vetiver rooted soil matrix is 2·1 time...

  • Stability Analysis of Road Embankment Slope Subjected to Rainfall Considering Runoff-Unsaturated Seepage and Unsaturated Fluid–Solid Coupling
International Journal of Civil Engineering, 2017
Co-Authors: Junxin Liu, Chunhe Yang, Jianjun Gan, Yutian Liu, Liu Wei, Qiang Xie
    Abstract:

Rainfall is an important triggering factor influencing the stability of soil Slope. Study on some influences of the rainfall on the instability characteristics of unsaturated soil Embankment Slope has been conducted in this paper. First, based on the effective stress theory of unsaturated soil for single variable, fluid–solid coupling constitutive equations were established. Then, a segment of red clay Embankment Slope, along a railway from Dazhou to Chengdu, damaged by rainfall, was theoretically, numerically, and experimentally researched by considering both the runoff-underground seepage and the fluid–solid coupling. The failure characteristics of the Embankment Slope and the numerical simulation results were in excellent agreement. In the end, a sensitivity analysis of the key factors influencing the Slope stability subjected to rainfall was performed with emphasis on damage depth as well as infiltration rainfall depth. From the analysis in this paper, it was concluded that the intensity of rainfall, rainfall duration, and long-term strength of soil have most effects on Slope stability when subjected to rainfall. These results suggest that the numerical simulation can be used for practical applications.
