  • Efektifitas Berbagai Konsentrasi Rebusan Akar Wangi (Vetiveria zizanoides) terhadap Daya Hambat Bakteri Streptococcus mutans
    2015
    Co-Authors: Surati Surati, Betty Saptiwi
    Abstract:

Purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of various concentrations of detection of vetiver to the inhibition of bacteria Streptococcus mutans. Type of experimental research, research design completely randomized design (CRD) with free variables stew vetiver with 20,40,60,80 and 100% concentration, with two repetitions. The average power resistor which is a clear area around the disk is measured horizontally, vertically, diagonally diagonal 1 and 2 is 20% (3.25), 40% (4.30), 60% (5.39), 80% (6.39) and 100% (7.81). One way ANOVA test results obtained significant value. Results of the Tukey post hoc test showed that stew vetiver has given inhibitory effect (clear zone) against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Decoction of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) can inhibit the Streptococcus mutans bacteria and the inhibition of bacterial growth sterptococcus mutans tends to increase with increasing concentration of decoction of vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides).

  • crescimento de especies nativas de cerrado e de Vetiveria zizanioides em processos de revegetacao de vocorocas
    Ciencia Florestal, 2014
Co-Authors: Thamy Evellini Dias Marques, Hudson Eustaquio Baeta, Mariangela Garcia Praca Leite, Sebastiao Venâncio Martins, Alessandra Rodrigues Kozovits
    Abstract:

Rates of seed germination, plant survival and growth, as measured in the present study, are essential parameters to characterize the biological potential of species for the restoration of degraded areas. The lack of knowledge about these aspects in native species has justified the use of exotic plants in Brazilian gullies revegetation. However, especially in places subject to highly seasonal climate and on oligotrophic soils, exotic species do not always perform well, leading to revegetation failure or significantly increasing the cultivation care needs. To improve the knowledge concerning to the biological potencial of cerrado native species and of an exotic grass which has been used for erosion contention, in the present study, seedlings and clumps of native cerrado species, Cratylia argentea (Desv.) Kuntze and Echinolaena inflexa (Poir.) Chase, and of the exotic grass Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, were transferred to a gully colluvium in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais state, where they remained during the dry season of 2010 without application of fertilizers or irrigation. In randomized block design, plots of 1 x 1 m received four planting treatments: clumps of Echinolaena inflexa or Vetiveria zizanioides, and clumps of these grasses intercropped with the legume Cratylia argentea. All grasses and 73% of the legume seedlings survived. As expected, the green cover of Echinolaena inflexadecreased throughout the dry season, however, showing regrowth after the first rains. Leaf area of Vetiveria zizanioides remained active and grew significantly in the period. Cratylia argentea showed high rates of germination and growth; however, nodulation occurred in only two individuals. Thus, there was no influence of the legume on grasses growth. Results indicate that both native species and the exotic grass tested are potential successful plants for gullies replanting. Plants survived and grew on low nutrient substrate and during the critical period of drought without any fertilizer or irrigation application.

  • crescimento de especies nativas de cerrado e de Vetiveria zizanioides em processos de revegetacao de vocorocas growth of cerrado native species and of Vetiveria zizanioides in colluvium of gullies
    2014
Co-Authors: Thamy Evellini Dias Marques, Hudson Eustaquio Baeta, Sebastiao Venâncio Martins, Mariangela Garcia, Praca Leite, Alessandra Rodrigues Kozovits
    Abstract:

Vetiveria zizanioides manteve a area foliar ativa e apresentou crescimento significativo no periodo.

  • screening of phytochemical and antibacterial activity of hemidesmus indicus l and Vetiveria zizanoides l
European Journal of Experimental Biology, 2012
    Co-Authors: K Subha, G Senthilkumar
    Abstract:

The screening and study of selected Indian medicinal plants Hemidesmus indicus (L.) and Vetiveria zizanoides (L.) were selected for phytochemical screening and antibacterial studies. The solvents used for the extraction of plant roots were ethanol, methanol and distilled water. The invitro antibacterial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method. The most susceptible Gram-Postive and Gram-negative bacteria were tested. The extracts of plant Hemidesmus indicus (L.) and Vetiveria zizanoides (L.) inhibited the growth of the bacterial strains investigated. The most active extracts were compared with the standard antibiotics, penicillin, Streptomycin and Ampicillin 100mg/disc). The results obtained in the present study suggest that preliminary phytochemical analysis detected the presence of Alkaloids, Aminoacid, Flavonoids Saponins and Tanins. The Hemidesmus indicus (L.) and Vetiveria zizanoides (L.) could be used in treating diseases caused by the test organisms. The results are discussed in detail.

  • nitrate removal in vertical flow constructed wetland planted with Vetiveria zizanioides effect of hydraulic load
    Ecological Engineering, 2017
Co-Authors: Adelaide Almeida, Fatima Carvalho, Maria J Imaginario, Ivone Castanheira, Ana R Prazeres, C Ribeiro
    Abstract:

Abstract A vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) planted with Vetiveria zizanioides (0.24 m2 × 0.70 m) intended to receive a synthetic wastewater with high nitrate concentration was used to study the influence of the hydraulic load (HL) increase on nitrate load removal, keeping a low carbon nitrogen ratio (C/N). The inlet nitrate concentration was kept constant ([NO3−] = 83 ± 7 mg L−1) and four different levels of HL were used, from 148 ± 5 to 473 ± 5 L m−2 d−1; accordingly, nitrate load increased from 12.4 ± 0.7 g m−2 d−1 to 39.9 ± 0.7 g m−2 d−1. The nitrate load removal occurred in all trials, increasing proportionally to HL and nitrate load applied, reaching a maximum value of 11.9 ± 0.7 g m−2 d−1 at a nitrate load applied of 20.4 ± 1.2 g m−2 d−1 and HL of 239 ± 7 L m−2 d−1. Beyond that maximum, a further increase in HL or nitrate load applied led to a considerable decrease in nitrate load removal. Anaerobic conditions were not detected and denitrification was observed even at 5.2 ± 1.2 mg L−1 O2 in influent. Toxicity signs in Vetiveria zizanioides leaves were never detected and the results obtained suggest that the used plant absorbs and assimilates nitrogen from wastewater. Although Vetiveria zizanioides is not commonly used in constructed wetland, it proved to be very a robust, efficient and promoting system, encouraging further studies.
