    A total of 196239 eggs pertaining to two selected strains of White Leghorn (PL1 and PL2) and their contemporarily reared crosses over 8 consecutive generation were incubated for evaluation of reproductive traits viz; fertility, Embryonic Mortality and malposistions. Strain PL2 had significantly higher incidence of dirty eggs, total Embryonic Mortality and malpositions which indicated it's higher genetic load as compared to PL1. The crosses had lower Embryonic Mortality. Malposition V and VI occurred with higher frequencies in all the unhatched embryos as well as in the pips. The pures and crosses did not differ from one another in the frequencies of various malpositions. The results indicated the inter-strain/genetic group variability for fertility, Embryonic Mortality and malpositions

  • Quantitative genetic aspects of Embryonic Mortality in White Leghorn chicken

    Abstract:

    Embryonic Mortality of a long-term selected strain (PL2) with the objective of studying its quantitative genetic aspects were recorded through broken-open examination. The validity of two of the important assumptions involved in the estimation of genetic parameters i.e., normality of distribution and the relation between mean and standard deviation was examined. Embryonic Mortality and its components depicted highly asymmetric distributions and a strong relationship between mean and standard deviation. Transformation of percentage observations to arcsine scales by two methods i.e., simple and Owen's method tended to decrease the magnitude of the non-normality but failed to change the significance of the various distribution statistics. Transformation slightly reduced the relation between mean and standard deviation but the correlation between mean and standard deviation continued to be significant (0.45±0.15 to 0.91±0.07). Heritabilities for total incubation Mortality varied between 19.2±12.4 and 21.2±12.8% for different stages of Mortality on percentage and arcsine scale. Heritability was high for late dead, pips and total Mortality (12.8±11.2 to 21.2±12.8%) while it was low for early and mid-Mortality (4.4±9.5 to 11.2±10.9%). There appeared a tendency for late-Mortality to have as high heritability as that of total Mortality. Adjustment of data for hatch effects had negligible effect on the heritability estimates. Transformation of data to the arcsine scale (simpleand Owen's method) did not lead to any consistent change in the heritability values.

    The study was conducted on 8335 eggs obtained from two long-term growth selected (PQ1&2), a control (PQ3), a growth cum sexual maturity selected (PQ4) and three plumage -and egg -colour variant (WP, WB & WE) lines of Japanese quails. Incidence of dried -off eggs during incubation varied between 2.6 to 6.3%, and was highest in the growth selected lines, and lowest in the plumage and egg-colour lines. Selection for body weight over 24 generations led to decrease in fertility, hatchability and increase in Embryonic Mortality as indicated by the comparison of PQ1 and PQ2 with PQ3 line. Selection for sexual maturity led to restoring of fertility and hatchability. Plumage and egg colour variant lines had higher fertility and hatchability than other lines. The pattern of Embryonic Mortality also differed among lines with proportionally higher Mortality during 0–11 d in the selected than the control line. The plumage and egg colour variant lines had lowest early (0-11d) but highest late (>12d) and piping Mortality.

  • Hatchability and Embryonic Mortality of Japanese quails as influenced by strain, egg shell -quality and storage length

    Hatchability and Embryonic Mortality of two growth-selected lines of Japanese quails, as influenced by egg specific gravity (1.078 to 1.10 units) and pre-incubation storage length (0-11d) were studied based on 2374 incubated eggs. Data were analyzed on percentage and arcsin scales. Analysis of variance conducted to study the effect of strain, shell quality and storage length yielded similar results on the percentage as well as the arcsin transformed scales. Hatchability and incubation Mortality were not affected by strain and egg specific gravity but were significantly influenced by storage length. Each day of storage for the entire period of 11 days decreased hatchability by 8.0 to 10.3%. The decline in hatchability resulted from increased in early (0-11d) Mortality (b=9.38±1.21 and 11.2±1.10%/d). The linear terms of regression of hatchability and Embryonic Mortality on storage length accounted for 50 to 70% of the variation. The quadratic terms of regression were significant for hatchability of fertile eggs and early Embryonic Mortality but the contribution was low (2.7 to 15.7%). The curvilinearity resulted from a steep decline in hatchability beyond 7–8 days of storage where it virtually became zero.

    Embryonic Mortality and anomalies of a selected (PL2) and an unselected control (PL3) of White Leghorn were recorded, through broken-open examination. The incidence of dirty eggs was very low (0.51.1%). Fertility in the two populations was high (95.4 to 97.6%) with the difference between the two lines beingnon-significant. The incidence of total Embryonic Mortality varied between 10.8 and 17.2%. Maximum Mortality occurred during two critical periods i.e. late (18–22 d), pipping stage and the early stage (0-5d). Strain PL2 exhibited significantly higher total Embryonic Mortality than the unselected control line (PL3). The incidence of malpositions in all the unhatched embryos (>17d) varied between 33.3 and 54.8% with line PL2 having higher malpositions. Of the six types of malpositions recorded, type VI i.e. break above the right wing, occurred with highest frequency in both the strains. The incidence of double mal-positions was very low i.e. 5.9 and 10.3% in PL2 and PL3 respectively. Incidence of spontaneous Embryonic malformations was 5.1 and 5.9% in PL2 and PL3, respectively.

    Embryonic Mortality is the major cause of reproductive and economic loss in cattle and Buffaloes. Embryonic Mortality is more common during the early than the late Embryonic period, i.e., from day 8th to 16th at the hatching of blastocysts and initiation of elongation and commencement of implantation without affecting cycle lengths. Early Embryonic Mortality is a major source of Embryonic and economic loss with Mortality rate up to 40%. Embryonic Mortality is also reported due to mineral deficiency and heat stress in cattle and buffaloes. Physical modifications of animal environment, nutritional management with Antioxidant, trace minerals and genetic development of breeds that are less sensitive to heat stress should be best solution. Embryonic death occurs at the time of maternal recognition of pregnancy, probably related to a failure of the Interferon tau (IFNι) secretory mechanism along with progesterone deficiency and luteal insufficiency. Recent research, both in terms of physiological mechanisms and pharmacological treatments has mostly focused on the period of maternal recognition of pregnancy or the anti-luteolytic effect. hCG/ GnRH /Progesterone supplementation have shown positive results. Supplementation of interferon as anti-luteolytic agent and supplementing Omega-3 has shown encouraging results. Ovarian examination, Animal history, blood/milk progesterone levels, PAG test and ultrasound appear to be the only practical tool presently available for diagnosis of Embryonic Mortality. This present review article is covering all the aspects of Embryonic Mortality with special reference totrace minerals, heat stress, hormonal impact and interferon tau.
