Holland in Iceland revisited: an Emic Approach to evaluating U.S. vocational interest models.

Archival data from the development of the Icelandic Interest Inventory (Einarsd6ttir & Rounds, 2007) were used in the present investigation. The data included an indigenous pool of occupations and work-task items representing Iceland's world of work that had been administered to a sample of 597 upper secondary school students. Multidimensional scaling analysis and property vector fitting using Prediger's (1981) work-task dimensions were applied to the item responses to test if the RIASEC model could be identified. The results indicated that a 4-dimensional solution better explains the interest space in Iceland than Holland's 2-dimensional RIASEC representation. The work-task dimension of People-Things and the Sex-Type and Prestige dimensions were located in the 1st and 2nd dimensions of the multidimensional scaling solution, but Data-Ideas, a dimension critical to the RIASEC model, was not. The 3rd and 4th dimensions did not correspond to any dimensions previously detected in structural studies in the United States and seem to be related to specific ecological, cultural, and political forces in Iceland. These results demonstrate the importance of selecting representative indigenous occupations and work tasks when evaluating the RIASEC model. The present study is an example of the next step in a comprehensive cross-cultural research program on vocational interests, an Emic investigation.

To deal with the specifics of cultural groups, the development of machine-readable cultural knowledge representations can provide a substantial help. In this research we present a process to build time-affordable, Emic, conceptually-sound and machine-readable cultural representations. These representations originate from Cognitive Anthropology. They follow a three steps methodology: ethnographic sampling, individuals’ personal knowledge elicitation and cultural consensus analysis. We use lexico-semantic relation extraction as a mean to automatically elicit knowledge structures. Their formalisation is achieved through Ontology Engineering.We conducted experiments to build three cultural ontologies in order to assess the whole process. It came out that with the lexico-semantic relation extraction technique, the best representations we can obtain are consensually-limited, incomplete and contain some errors. However, many clues indicate that these problems should be solved by using higher quality elicitation techniques.

International Journal of Management Reviews, 2012Co-Authors: Ahu Tatli, Mustafa ÖzbilginAbstract:This paper presents an Emic Approach, which is sensitive to the emergence of new categories of difference, in intersectional study of workforce diversity. The paper first provides a comprehensive review of the literature on diversity at work in the business and management field, identifying that this literature is predominantly etic in nature, as it focuses on pre-established, rather than emergent, categories of difference. Next, an Emic Approach to researching diversity at work is offered. In offering an Emic Approach, the key distinction the paper makes is the direction of the investigation. Unlike the dominant etic Approach, which adopts pre-established (ex ante) diversity categories, the Emic perspective proposed identifies emergent and situated categories of diversity ex post, as embedded in a specific time and place. In order to operationalize the Emic Approach, the use of the Bourdieuan theory of capitals is suggested, and a five-step research guide is presented.
