two meanings of reverse vaccinology and the Empirical Nature of vaccine science
Vaccine, 2011Co-Authors: Marc H V Van RegenmortelAbstract:The remarkable success of molecular and structural biology in elucidating many biological phenomena has had the unfortunate consequence that many scientists are no longer aware of the Empirical foundations of all experimental science. This is evident from published statements that claim, for instance, that rational design represents “the only approach that can elevate vaccine research from an Empirical exercise to a scientific discipline” (Karlsson-Hedestam et al. 2008).

On the Social and Empirical Nature of Kant’s Transcendental Anthropocentrism: The Problem of Human Nature
Respectus Philologicus, 2019Co-Authors: Oleg LeszczakAbstract:This paper presents a conceptual-discursive analysis of Immanuel Kant’s texts from the viewpoint of the ontological essence of humanity (the so-called human Nature). On the basis of a functional-pragmatic methodology, the author proposes a metalanguage for a pragmatic conceptual analysis of Kant’s philosophical discourse, together with his own idea of a human as a person, human being, individual, character, and bearer of human traits. The paper consists of two parts. Part One presents the principles by which the human personality is structured, as well as the fundamental methodological questions of the essence of humanity. Part Two analyzes Kant’s notion of “human Nature” in both the formal aspect and that of systematic localization. It also considers the issues of social pragmatics and the Empirical motivation of “human Nature,” which arise from a discursive analysis of texts by Kant. The author attempts to demonstrate that Kant was one of the first philosophers to discern the specificity of human Nature in social relations of human personality, which he presented neither in a causal-deterministic form (as a spiritual substance handed down from generation to generation) nor an essentialist one (as a timeless transcendental essence), but rather as a function of social experience for a particular human being (both pragmatic-teleological and transcendental-a posteriori).

On the Social and Empirical Nature of Kant’s Transcendental Anthropocentrism: The Essence and Location of “Human Nature”. Part II

From light-off curves to kinetic rate expressions for three-way catalysts
Topics in Catalysis, 2001Co-Authors: N. Matthess, Daniel Schweich, Brigitte Martin, F. CastagnaAbstract:A new approach for obtaining reliable kinetic data from light-off curves is proposed. By fitting laboratory and simulated light-off curves with a simple 1-D model, apparent activation energies and frequency factors are adjusted using the Simplex method. The originality of the method is that kinetic parameters are obtained sequentially using simple mixtures. The whole set of parameters is then checked against experimental results involving all the reactants. Simulation results are satisfactory despite the Empirical Nature of the rate laws.

Pore-scale derivation of the Ergun equation to enhance its adaptability and generalization
Chemical Engineering Science, 2008Co-Authors: J. Prieur Du Plessis, Sonia WoudbergAbstract:The Empirical Nature of the well-known Ergun equation for prediction of the permeability of granular materials inhibits the straightforward generalization to other geometries of the pore space and non-Newtonian effects of traversing fluids. In this paper the results are discussed of a pore-scale model that can be regarded as qualitative and quantitative proof of the Ergun equation. The pore-scale model has superior adaptive capabilities and also allows investigation of the porosity dependence of the Empirical coefficients of the Ergun equation. Some advantages, based on physical grounds, of the pore-scale model are outlined.

Discerning Chemical Pressure amidst Weak Potentials: Vibrational Modes and Dumbbell/Atom Substitution in Intermetallic Aluminides
The journal of physical chemistry. A, 2018Co-Authors: Katerina P. Hilleke, Daniel C. FredricksonAbstract:The space requirements of atoms are generally regarded as key constraints in the structures, reactivity, and physical properties of chemical systems. However, the Empirical Nature of such considera...
