2020Co-Authors: Yılmaz Kılıçaslan, Ünal TöngürAbstract:This study aims to examine the impact of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on Employment Generation in the Turkish manufacturing industry. This study is said to be the first attempt in exploring the impact of ICT on Employment Generation in Turkish manufacturing industry at the firm level. The analysis is based on firm level data obtained from Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) and covers the period from 2003 to 2013. The data used in the analysis includes all firms employing 20 or more employees in Turkish manufacturing industry. Our findings based on system GMM estimations show that ICT has Employment-enhancing effects in Turkish manufacturing. Moreover, our results provide the evidence that tangible ICT capital has stronger Employment Generation impact than that of intangible ICT capital in medium-tech and low-tech industries.

trade expansion and Employment Generation how mercantilist does china have to be
International Review of Applied Economics, 2013Co-Authors: Xiao JiangAbstract:We conduct an input-output analysis of China’s Employment changes due to changes in trade structure on sectoral level. We find that between 2002 and 2007 China generated about 71 million jobs due to trade expansion. We also estimate the additional amount of trade that would be needed if China were using trade surplus as the main tool to absorb its excess labor. We find that given the enormous magnitude of this estimated amount, this “mercantilist” approach to excess labor absorption is not feasible. Finally, using Spearman rank correlation analysis, we find that the ranking of China’s sectors’ Employment Generation capacities is inversely related to the ranking of these sectors’ trade performances. This suggests that the “mercantilist” approach to excess labor absorption is not only infeasible but also inefficient. We end the paper by suggesting a more balanced growth path for China.

International journal of innovation and scientific research, 2014Co-Authors: Kayode Akinyemi, Victor Ebiefie, Tinuola Adenike Adekojo, Ibrahim Adeniyi IbiyemiAbstract:This study investigates the relationship between trade liberalization and Employment Generation in Nigeria using secondary data on the quoted variables for the period 2003-2007. Panel regression model (Pooled Least Squares) was employed to examine the nexus between trade liberalization and Employment Generation. The study found that Employment Generation as result of trade liberalization the key determinant is tariff structure as a percentage increase will generate 73.4% of Employment while other variables (wages, openness and FDI) effect on Employment is not much. Also, the cumulative significant of the study shows that trade tariffs, wage rate, openness, and foreign direct investment have simultaneous significant effect on Employment rate in the Nigeria's manufacturing, transport, agriculture and mining and quarrying sectors. Consequently, it was recommended that government, through legislative actions and mutual collaboration between the newly created Ministry of Trade and Investment and other trade-related agencies should continue to design policy measures directed toward the increase in tariff for the importable goods to facilitate more Employment Generation. Also, government should create the enabling environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to strive. Public-private partnerships toward the development of the considered real sectors should be encouraged in order to enhance Employment Generation.
