Predatory functional responses of Agelena labyrinthica (Clerck) to Empoasca vitis (Gthe)
2001Co-Authors: Zhao DongAbstract:The predatory functional responses of Agelena labyrinthica (Clerck) to Empoasca (Empoasca) vitis (Gthe) were studied in laboratory. The results showed that the functional responses of both male and female spiders belonged to Holling's Ⅱ type. The control ability of the female predator of A. labyrinthica (Clerck) to the prey E. (Empoasca) vitis (Gthe) was larger than the male spiders, and their predatory upper limits were 295.3 adults and 120.7 adults, respectively. This suggested that the spiders had larger potential in controlling the leafhoppers. The feeding pattern of A. labyrinthica (Clerck) was also observed.

Yunicella, a new genus in the Empoasca-complex of the Empoascini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) from China and Thailand.

The other two new species cannot be placed into a species group: Empoasca (Empoas- ca) dendritica Qin & Liu and Empoasca (Empoasca) polyprocessa Fletcher & Liu, spp. nov. An additional 15 species and the subgenus Empoasca (Livasca) Dworakowska & Viraktamath, 1978 are recorded for the first time from China.

In addition, A. cienka Dworakowska, 1982, n. comb.; A. decedens Paoli, 1932 and A. sakaii Dworakowska 1971, n. comb., are recorded from China for the first time. The following additional new combinations from Empoasca are also proposed: A. cisiana (Dworakowska, 1971); A. kaicola (Dworakowska, 1982), A. lutowa (Dworakowska, 1971), A. mona (Dworakowska, 1994), A. nipponica (Dworakowska 1982), A. rybiogon (Dworakowska, 1971), and A. uniprossicae (Sohi, 1977). Empoasca ( Empoasca ) kishtwarensis Sharma, 1984 is proposed as a new synonym of Asymmetrasca kaicola (Dworakowska, 1982). Habitus photos and illustrations of the male genitalia of the new species and a key to Chinese species are provided. New names are proposed to replace two junior homonyms in Empoasca ( Matsumurasca ).

Yield and insect injury in leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris and Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore) infested dry beans in Ontario and Colombia

SchaafsmaAbstract:Recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between a leafhopper-susceptible bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), Berna Dutch brown and leafhopper-resistant selection EMP 419 were examined for resistance to the leafhopper species Empoasca abae (Harris) and Empoasca kraemeri Ross and Moore in Ontario, Canada and Colombia, South America, respectively. In both Ontario and Colombia there were significant positive correlations of visual injury scores with percent reductions in seed count, seed yield and seed weights. Leafhopper injury symptoms were significantly correlated with degree of stunting in Ontario, while only leaf burn scores were correlated with stunting in Colombia. Nymph counts were significantly and positively correlated with leaf curl scores in Ontario but not in Colombia, despite significant rank correlations of leaf burn scores and leaf curl scores between these locations. To evaluate potato leafhopper damage a visual score that combines the overall severity of leaf burn, leaf curling and stunting symptoms is usually used. Nonetheless, it may be useful to evaluate these symptoms separately since they may be the result of separate mechanisms of damage, controlled by separate genes.
