The behavioral repertoires, activity time budgets, effect of time of the day, sex, weather, and relative humidity on activities of adult Emus were investigated. Eight randomly selected Emus were observed using one-zero sampling method for 12 days, each period of observation lasting 30 minutes. The major behavioral categories identified were ingestive drinking, standing, locomotion, grooming, socialization, vocalization, and resting. The Emus spent most of their time walking, standing, and eating. Immediately after moving to a new pen, Emus were found to huddle together to keep away from Emus already resident in the pen. The time spent on each activity was not significantly different between the sexes. The findings from this study provided important information on the behavior and activities of Emus. The observed behaviors need to be further examined to assess their relations to the birds’ welfare.

Forty-two Emus were used in two trials, undertaken under warm and cool weather conditions, respectively. Male Emus had significantly higher fat yields than females (12.43kg vs 9.5kg, P=0.002). About 38.1% of the Emus had no wounds or bruises, 40.5% had bruises, while 21.4% had small wounds after transport. Meat from injured Emus had significantly higher pH45. In warm weather, Emus experienced significantly higher loss in body weight than that under cool weather. Drip loss in meat after 24h of storage was higher in Emus which had greater live weight loss after transport (r=0.66, P<0.0001), confirming the adverse effects of transport stress on meat quality. Nutrient supplementation did not significantly affect processing yield or meat quality characteristics. This study points to the need for optimizing transport conditions of Emus to maintain meat quality.

Thus, long-distance shipping of birds to an abattoir is necessary. Two experiments were conducted, wherein Emus were transported in a modified horse trailer for 6 h to an abattoir. Changes in the indices of stress and metabolic homeostasis (hematology, serum biochemistry, enzymes, and body temperature and weight) were used to evaluate the physiological response to transport. The activities of enzymes alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatine kinase increased significantly (P < 0.001) from pretransport to slaughter, indicating muscle cell wall damages. The body temperature of Emus was significantly (P < 0.001) increased from 37.0 to 39.6°C after transport in experiment 1 and from 37.2 to 38.9°C in experiment 2. Transport resulted in significant weight loss in both experiments (P < 0.001; 2.1 ± 0.2 kg vs. 0.6 ± 0.2 kg) and posttransport resting at lairage led to slight regaining (P < 0.01) of BW. Oral administration of supplements before and after transport was effective in protecting against muscle damage and faster recovery of BW losses during lairage. The clinical findings were suggestive of the incidence of exertional rhabdomyolysis and thus underlined the need for careful handling and improved transport conditions of Emus.

Influence Analysis on the CRH2 Emus Vehicle Bodies Voltage Fluctuation Considering Isolated Rail Joint Discharge

Firstly, the working grounding and protection grounding systems of CRH2 Emus are introduced, and then, we established the equivalent model of CRH2 Emus grounding system and confirmed its parameters. Meanwhile, insulating section discharge model is also established. Secondly, the simulation results show all the car body voltages as wheel-rail discharge phenomenon occurs, and we analyze CRH2 Emus grounding system structure itself. Finally, we come to the conclusion that the change of value of the grounding resistor shall make CRH2 Emus train body electric potential difference at the time of isolated rail joint discharge phenomenon lower than before.

International Conference on Electrical and Information Technologies, 2017Co-Authors: Ying Wang, Xiaoqiang Chen, Fengyang Gao, Shiwen LiangAbstract:Aiming at the inevitable pantograph-catenary off-line arc when electric multiple units (Emus) run, the CRH3 Emus, which operate at China Chongqing–Lichuan line, are selected as the research subject. Vehicle body voltage caused by the pantograph-catenary off-line arc is analyzed. First, the structure of the vehicle body and CRH3 Emus grounding system are studied. Second, based on PSCAD/EMTDC software, electric parameters of traction network and CRH3 Emus are ascertained, then a coupling model of vehicle-grid system is established, and an extended pantograph-catenary arc model is utilized to simulate pantograph-catenary off-line when vehicles run. Through the pantograph-catenary off-line model, vehicle body overvoltage distribution is analyzed. Finally, aiming at the CRH3 Emus grounding system, corresponding methods are proposed to suppress vehicle body overvoltage.
