  • causal relationship between Energy consumption and gdp growth revisited a dynamic panel data approach
    Ecological Economics, 2008
Co-Authors: Bwonung Huang, Mingjeng Hwang, Chin W Yang
    Abstract:

This paper uses the panel data of Energy consumption and GDP for 82 countries from 1972 to 2002. Based on the income levels defined by the World Bank, the data are divided into four categories: low income group, lower middle income group, upper middle income group, and high income group. We employ the GMM-SYS approach for the estimation of the panel VAR model in each of the four groups. Afterwards, the causal relationship between Energy consumption and economic growth is tested and ascertained. We discover: (a) in the low income group, there exists no causal relationship between Energy consumption and economic growth; (b) in the middle income groups (lower and upper middle income groups), economic growth leads Energy consumption positively; (c) in the high income group countries, economic growth leads Energy consumption negatively. After further in-depth analysis of Energy related data, the results indicate that, in the high income group, there is a great environmental improvement as a result of more efficient Energy use and reduction in the release of CO2. However, in the upper middle income group countries, after the Energy crisis, the Energy efficiency declines and the release of CO2 rises. Since there is no evidence indicating that Energy consumption leads economic growth in any of the four income groups, a stronger Energy Conservation Policy should be pursued in all countries.

  • investments in Energy Conservation Policy implications for pakistan
International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy, 2020
Co-Authors: Saba Anwar, Hafsa Hina, Fahad Sultan, Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, Muzaffar Abbas, Perfecto G Aquino
    Abstract:

The paper investigates the impact of Energy investment on economic growth for Pakistan using Solow model. The Energy is introduced as factor input in the Solow growth model along with physical capital, labor and human capital and some other Policy variables. The period of analysis ranges from 1970 to 2018. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach confirms that Energy investment contributes positively to economic growth both in the short and the long run along with trade openness. The study provides an important Policy recommendation that government should encourage the investment activities in Energy sector to meet the rising Energy demand which in turn stimulates economic growth.

  • a comprehensive framework to quantify Energy savings potential from improved operations of commercial building stocks
    Energy Policy, 2014
Co-Authors: Elie Azar, Carol C Menassa
    Abstract:

Abstract While studies highlight the significant impact of actions performed by occupants and facility managers on building Energy performance, current policies ignore the importance of human actions and the potential Energy savings from a more efficient operation of building systems. This is mainly attributed to the lack of methods that evaluate non-technological drivers of Energy use for large stocks of commercial buildings to support Policy making efforts. Therefore, this study proposes a scientific approach to quantifying the Energy savings potential due to improved operations of any stock of commercial buildings. The proposed framework combines Energy modeling techniques, studies on human actions in buildings, and surveying and sampling methods. The contributions of this study to Energy Policy are significant as they reinforce the role of human actions in Energy Conservation, and support efforts to integrate operation-focused solutions in Energy Conservation Policy frameworks. The framework's capabilities are illustrated in a case study performed on the stock of office buildings in the United States (US). Results indicate a potential 21 percent reduction in the current Energy use levels of these buildings through realistic changes in current building operation patterns.

  • the short and long run causality relationship among economic growth Energy consumption and financial development evidence from south mediterranean countries smcs
    Energy Economics, 2017
    Co-Authors: Bassem Kahouli
    Abstract:

Abstract This study aims at examining the short-run and long-run causal link between economic growth, Energy consumption and financial development by using data set of 6 SMCs for the 1995–2015 periods. The basic testing procedure requires four steps: ADF and PP unit root tests, Bound tests for Co-integration, ARDL approach and VECM method. The results confirm cointegration between the variables. It means that the long-run relationship exists. The short-run causal relationships (unidirectional) exist at least once for each country (except Egypt). The Granger causality results for individual countries give mixed results. These results urge for the attention of the Policy makers in SMCs to design a comprehensive Energy Conservation Policy to minimize the consequences of massive Energy consumption on economic growth by adding financial development.
