occurrence and duration of various operational definitions of sedentary bouts and cross sectional associations with cardiometabolic health indicators the Energy Project
Preventive Medicine, 2015Co-Authors: Teatske M Altenburg, Johannes Brug, M De Niet, Maite Verloigne, I De Bourdeaudhuij, Odysseas Androutsos, Y Manios, Eva Kovacs, Bettina Bringolfisler, Chinapaw M J MAbstract:Abstract Objective This study examined the occurrence and duration of sedentary bouts and explored the cross-sectional association with health indicators in children applying various operational definitions of sedentary bouts. Methods Accelerometer data of 647 children (10–13 years old) were collected in five European countries. We analyzed sedentary time ( Results Occurrence of sedentary bouts varied largely between the various definitions. Children spent most of their sedentary time in bouts of ≥ 5 min while bouts of ≥ 20 min were rare. Linear regression analysis revealed few significant associations of sedentary time accumulated in bouts of ≥ 5–30 min with health indicators. Moreover, we found that more associations became significant when allowing no tolerance time within sedentary bouts. Conclusion Despite a few significant associations, we found no convincing evidence for an association between sedentary time accumulated in bouts and health indicators in 10–13 year old children.

measured sedentary time and physical activity during the school day of european 10 to 12 year old children the Energy Project
Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2014Co-Authors: Maartje M Van Stralen, Johannes Brug, Saskia Te J Velde, Maite Verloigne, Odysseas Androutsos, Eva Kovacs, Mine Yildirim, Anouk Wulp, Alain Doessegger, Mai Jm ChinapawAbstract:Abstract Objectives This study aims to describe the time devoted to sedentary and physical activities at school in five European countries and to examine differences according to country, sex, ethnicity, parental education and weight status. Design cross-European cross-sectional survey. Methods Primary schoolchildren (n = 1025) aged 10–12 years in Belgium, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Switzerland wore accelerometers for at least six consecutive days. Only weekdays were used for this study to calculate the percentages of school-time spent in sedentary activities and moderate to vigorous intensity activity. Trained research assistants measured height and weight. Sex and date of birth were self-reported by the child and parental education and ethnicity were parent-reported. Results European schoolchildren spent on average 65% of their time at school in sedentary activities and 5% on moderate to vigorous intensity activities, with small differences between countries. Girls spent a significant larger amount of school-time in sedentary activities (67%) than boys (63%; p Conclusions European schoolchildren spend a small amount of their school-time in moderate to vigorous intensity activities and a large amount in sedentary activities, with small but significant differences across countries. Future interventions should target more physical activities and less sedentary time at school particularly in girls.

test retest reliability and construct validity of the Energy parent questionnaire on parenting practices Energy balance related behaviours and their potential behavioural determinants the Energy Project
BMC Research Notes, 2012Co-Authors: Amika S Singh, Mai Jm Chinapaw, Yannis Manios, Leonie Uijtdewilligen, Wendy Van Lippevelde, Juan Miguel Fernandezalvira, Sarolta Stomfai, Maria Van Der Sluijs, Caroline B Terwee, Johannes BrugAbstract:Insight in parental Energy balance-related behaviours, their determinants and parenting practices are important to inform childhood obesity prevention. Therefore, reliable and valid tools to measure these variables in large-scale population research are needed. The objective of the current study was to examine the test-retest reliability and construct validity of the parent questionnaire used in the Energy-Project, assessing parental Energy balance-related behaviours, their determinants, and parenting practices among parents of 10–12 year old children. We collected data among parents (n = 316 in the test-retest reliability study; n = 109 in the construct validity study) of 10–12 year-old children in six European countries, i.e. Belgium, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain. Test-retest reliability was assessed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and percentage agreement comparing scores from two measurements, administered one week apart. To assess construct validity, the agreement between questionnaire responses and a subsequent interview was assessed using ICC and percentage agreement. All but one item showed good to excellent test-retest reliability as indicated by ICCs > .60 or percentage agreement ≥ 75%. Construct validity appeared to be good to excellent for 92 out of 121 items, as indicated by ICCs > .60 or percentage agreement ≥ 75%. From the other 29 items, construct validity was moderate for 24 and poor for 5 items. The reliability and construct validity of the items of the Energy-parent questionnaire on multiple Energy balance-related behaviours, their potential determinants, and parenting practices appears to be good. Based on the results of the validity study, we strongly recommend adapting parts of the Energy-parent questionnaire if used in future research.

evidence based development of school based and family involved prevention of overweight across europe the Energy Project s design and conceptual framework
BMC Public Health, 2010Co-Authors: Johannes Brug, Saskia Te J Velde, Mai Jm Chinapaw, Elling Bere, Ilse De Bourdeaudhuij, Helen J Moore, Lea Maes, J Jensen, Yannis Manios, Nanna LienAbstract:There is an urgent need for more carefully developed public health measures in order to curb the obesity epidemic among youth. The overall aim of the "EuropeaN Energy balance Research to prevent excessive weight Gain among Youth" (Energy)-Project is the development and formative evaluation of a theory-informed and evidence-based multi-component school-based and family-involved intervention program ready to be implemented and evaluated for effectiveness across Europe. This program aims at promoting the adoption or continuation of health behaviors that contribute to a healthy Energy balance among school-aged children. Earlier studies have indicated that school and family environments are key determinants of Energy-balance behaviors in schoolchildren. Schools are an important setting for health promotion in this age group, but school-based interventions mostly fail to target and involve the family environment. Led by a multidisciplinary team of researchers from eleven European countries and supported by a team of Australian experts, the Energy-Project is informed by the Environmental Research Framework for Weight gain Prevention, and comprises a comprehensive epidemiological analysis including 1) systematic reviews of the literature, 2) secondary analyses of existing data, 3) focus group research, and 4) a cross European school-based survey. The theoretical framework and the epidemiological analysis will subsequently inform stepwise intervention development targeting the most relevant Energy balance-related behaviors and their personal, family-environmental and school-environmental determinants applying the Intervention Mapping protocol. The intervention scheme will undergo formative and pilot evaluation in five countries. The results of Energy will be disseminated among key stakeholders including researchers, policy makers and the general population. The Energy-Project is an international, multidisciplinary effort to develop and test an evidence-based and theory-informed intervention program for obesity prevention among school-aged children.
