The most effective argument in favor of the adoption of RE technologies in Jordan is that its lack of conventional Energy sources is complemented by abundant RE resources. Because RE technologies are not complex, require less operating and maintenance costs and are inherently more environmentally benign than conventional Energy sources foster their consideration by Energy policy makers as essential components of the national Energy balance. The most prudent approach to address this strategic issue is to alleviate the problems, constrains, and difficulties associated with each of the above-mentioned influencing factors. Despite a range of efforts by local and international stakeholders to increase access to modern Energy sources in the country, 89 per cent of Malawi׳s Energy is still sourced from traditional biomass mainly fuel wood. Only 8 per cent of the population in Malawi have access to electricity but installed capacity of electricity generation is lower than demand. This leads to load shedding by the electricity supplier; consequently electricity supply in Malawi is unreliable and micro and macroeconomic activities are significantly affected. Solar, non-traditional biomass (crop residues and forest residues not burnt on three stone fireplaces, and biogas), hydro, wind and geothermal are potential Energy resources that could enhance Malawi׳s Energy security. However, unreliable financing mechanisms for large scale Energy projects; shortage of trained human resource; lack of coordination among local institutions; unclear regulation enforcement; and sometimes political governance impede sustainable delivery of Energy projects. The Malawi Energy policy targets and drivers are also discussed in the paper. Based on the prevailing Energy Situation, a PESTLE analysis is provided in this paper outlining a novel thinking for addressing the political (P), economic (E), social (S), technological (T), legal (L), and environmental (E) challenges that constrain the development of renewable Energy technologies in Malawi.

Energy Situation, potential and application status of small-scale hydropower systems in Malawi

This paper has reviewed and documented Energy Situation and small-scale hydropower potential and application status in Malawi. The country's Energy sector is dominated by traditional forms of biomass. Level of modern forms of Energy supply is low. In particular, electricity supply is unreliable and small in capacity. Decentralised Energy supply systems like small-scale hydropower are some of the recommended Energy projects for developing countries. The paper adds knowledge on small-scale hydropower in Malawi. The study has reviewed Government reports and other documents. Informants were also consulted. Information from documents and informants was confirmed through site visits. The analysis of the small-scale hydropower potential sites indicates that the country has considerable potential for decentralised hydropower generation, which if fully exploited, can contribute to the country's electricity and power supply especially for rural electrification. Most of the identified potential sites are located in the northern parts of the country. From the information on the assessed sites, a proven potential of 7.6 MW can be harnessed. An inventory of small-scale hydropower systems shows there is an installed capacity of 5.8 MW with most of the plants not functioning due to various reasons. Challenges and opportunities towards popularisation of the technology have been identified and discussed.

Section 3.9 reviews renewable Energy laws, programs and policy, and Sect. 3.10 discusses the potential factors driving both demand and supply.
