Restructuring Precision Engineering Industry in Hungary
The Aftermath of ‘Real Existing Socialism’ in Eastern Europe, 1997Co-Authors: Attila HavasAbstract:Precision Engineering products are widely used: basically in all industrial sectors, as well as in public and private services, such as health care, education, energy and telecommunication networks, military and environmental protection. These wide-ranging applications suggest that there is a strong demand for precision Engineering products in a healthy economy. Measuring, monitoring and controlling instruments are needed to reduce costs and improve product quality. Thus companies striving to enhance their productivity and competitiveness apply more and more sophisticated precision instruments. Ageing populations, a major concern all over the world for national health care systems, boost the demand for medical equipment. Environmental issues are also gaining importance, and there is increasing pressure to install measuring and analysis instruments to investigate harmful effects on man, animals, plants, soil, air and food. Thus precision Engineering has enjoyed increasing demand in the advanced economies and production and employment have shown a more or less steady growth in all the three major economic regions of the world (Table 13.1).

SSRN Electronic Journal, 1993Co-Authors: Attila HavasAbstract:The Hungarian precision Engineering Industry, although fairly successful in the pre-war period and able to survive all the adverse corollaries of planning and CMEA orientation, might be wiped out by the long-awaited marketisation: far more competitive and powerful foreign competitors can now enter both its former single most important market, i.e. the former Soviet Union, and the domestic market. Thus accumulated knowledge of R&D and production engineers as well as the experience of the highly skilled blue-collar workers, albeit of primary importance in this Industry, might become completely worthless and disappear. Combined with fresh capital, access to new markets, recent technologies and up-to-date management methods, however, it can (and should) be regarded as a major asset and the indispensable basis for successful restructuring. This paper suggests that sweeping changes in size, ownership, internal organisation, and product range are also inevitable so as to be able to adjust to the new environment.

2015Co-Authors: B BotingAbstract:The incumbent (chemical) plant Engineering Industry is under pressure for two reasons. At first, the rising internationalization of the economy results in low-cost competitors putting pressure on prices and lead times of projects. Secondly, the decreasing oil prices result in major investment cuts in the oil & gas and chemical Industry. As a result, fewer projects are initiated by clients and there is thus increased pressure on the few projects which are available to tender for by the plant engineers. These two pressures result in various challenges for the plant engineer such as; reducing costs, speeding up project development and the reduction of complexity. A potential solution to this problem is the modularization and standardization (MS Modularity, Procurement discounts, 'Learning curve' effect, Parallel manufacturing, Using a fabrication yard, Owning a fabrication yard, Standardization, Design variation, Technological improvements, Market segment fit, Plant capacity, Module size and Company commitment. The conditions of relevance from a clients perspective are; Investment costs, Schedule, Energy efficiency and Risk. In the associated chapter it explained exactly why these conditions differentiate the 'traditional' and M&S business model. The conditions that are of relevance from a plant Engineering perspective are used to create the assessment framework. The output of the assessment framework can help the plant engineers to decide whether to stay with the 'traditional' business model or to further investigate the M&S business model.
