In particular, the method uses M&A cases related to business diversifications to identify atypical diversification opportunities. The underlying idea of the method is that industrial sectors of companies acquired by acquiring companies having similar characteristics with the focal company can be business diversification directions for the company. Industrial sectors of companies are identified by using IPC(International Patent Classification)-ISIC(International Standard Industrial Classification) concordance, and we updated the previous concordance to reflect the recent technological and business environments. For verification of the method, we used a successful M&A case related to business diversification and tested that the method can identify same industrial sector with the case as top priority. The results show that the method identified the same industrial sector as top ranking and other uncommon industrial sectors as recommended opportunities.

This employed a text mining-based Patent map approach to identify companies which can fulfill a specific strategic purpose of M&A for enhancing technological capabilities. The Patent map is the visualized technological landscape of a technology industry by using technological proximities among Patents, so companies which closely related to the strategic purpose can be identified. To evaluate the technological aspects of the identified companies, we provide the Patent indexes that evaluate both current and future technological capabilities and potential technology synergies between acquiring and acquired companies. Furthermore, because the proposed method evaluates potential targets from the overall corporate perspective and the specific strategic perspectives simultaneously, more robust and meaningful result can be obtained than when only one perspective is considered. Thus, the proposed framework can suggest the appropriate target companies that fulfill the strategic purpose of M&A for enhancing technological capabilities. For the verification of the framework, we provide an empirical study using Patent data related to flexible display technology.

How to use Patent Information to search potential technology partners in open innovation

However, as the openness across nations or industries has become broad, the conventional approaches to searching external partners have encountered a number of difficulties. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a systematic approach to searching potential technology partners using Patent Information which is accessible from anywhere. To specify the meaning of Patented inventions more specifically, the inter-relationships of words in Patent documents are taken into account, instead of simple use of technological keywords. The design of the proposed approach is comprised of three consecutive steps: data collection and preprocessing, transforming Patent documents into co-occurrence vectors with the aid of text mining technique and domain experts, and deriving potential technology partners via a similarity indicator. A case study of the automatic car washing technology has shown that this method has advantages over the conventional keyword-based Patent analysis in terms of significance. It is believed that the suggested approach can facilitate decision making in technology partner selection, and can serve as a starting point for a more general model.

This can most successfully be achieved by using technology roadmaps (TRMs), which are effective tools for connecting product and technology planning. However, TRMs generally tend to overstate the qualitative and expert-dependent knowledge rather than incorporating quantitative and objective Information. This paper proposes a new approach where Patent data are used in a quantitative methodology to support reliable decision-making in roadmapping processes. In this study, text-mining techniques were utilized to extract the relevant Information on which portfolio, co-word, and network analyses were carried out. The results were three types of product-technology maps that can be applied to specific roadmapping steps. The suggested approach is expected to yield useful Information about roadmapping, and help improve the overall effectiveness and quality of the technique.

A Patent-based cross impact analysis for quantitative estimation of technological impact: The case of Information and communication technology

Conventional CIA depends on an expert's qualitative judgment or intuition and thus it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively the impact of one technology on another. In this study, we employ Patent analysis in CIA to examine such impacts between technologies based on multiple Patent classifications. Patent Information is used for facilitating quantitative and systematic approach in CIA. The distinctive feature and main contribution of the proposed approach is the overcoming of the limitations of conventional CIA, by employing conditional probabilities based on the Patent Information. The classification of Patents, particularly the multiple classifications, is used to evaluate the relationships between technologies. As an illustration, a Patent-based CIA with Information and communication technologies (ICTs) was conducted. Firstly, the Patent-based cross impact among ICTs was calculated. Secondly, the technology pairs were classified based on the cross impact score between ICTs. Thirdly, a cross impact network was constructed to identify the complex relation among ICTs. Finally, the changes in cross impact scores between technologies over time were analyzed. The results of this research are expected to help practitioners to forecast future trends and to develop better R&D strategies.

As a consequence, the MA outcomes typically do not provide practical technology opportunities. This paper, therefore, proposes a new hybrid approach that enhances the performance of MA by combining it with conjoint analysis (CA) and citation analysis of Patent Information. First, keywords are extracted from Patent documents using text mining, and the morphology of existing Patents is identified by these keywords. Alternatives for new technology development from among the emerging technologies are presented by combining the valuable levels of each attribute in a morphology matrix predefined by domain experts. Then, configurations of new technology are suggested in order of priority using CA, and the technological feasibility of each new configuration is subsequently investigated. The technological competitiveness of a company can be analyzed by a newly suggested index, ldquotechnology share,rdquo which is analogous to the concept of market share in traditional CA. The proposed MA-CA hybrid process is illustrated with a case example of Patent Information from the thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) Patent database.

The Patent portfolio value analysis: A new framework to leverage Patent Information for strategic technology planning

Companies need a conceptual structure to assess the value of their Patent portfolio. This paper develops a practical and reproducible framework that can support scholars and practitioners to leverage the value of Patents and to extract all possible strategic Information from Patent portfolio. The Patent assessment process aims at comparing and contrasting the management of Patents to the company's technologic and innovative strategy. The framework employs determinants of Patent value that are elicited from Patent databases, such as claims, citations, and market coverage, and that are expressed in terms of judgments achieved by interviewing involved managers, such as strategic relevance and economic relevance. The paper examines the main methodological issues in assessing Patent portfolio value then, it describes the characteristics of the framework; subsequently, it illustrates the implementation of the proposed framework into two companies which operate in the aerospace and defense sector. The two implementations showthat the framework can be used for strategic planning and strategic technology management.

It is a powerful tool for strategic planning and technology management. Because technology is changing rapidly and market competition is fierce, the role of a TRM is becoming increasingly important. To support the role of a TRM, many firms and governments that use roadmapping are becoming interested in reducing costs while retaining objectivity during TRM development. One suggestion to achieve these goals is to use the keyword-based quantitative approach to creating a TRM, but the Information provided by the approach is limited because of the characteristics of keyword Information. To solve this limitation, this research uses the concept of ‘function’ to support quantitative analysis for developing a TRM. The concept of function can provide Information on the uses and purposes of a technology. To represent a function, a subject–action–object structure is commonly used. The suggested approach allows research and development (R&D) managers to extend the views of product and technology during development of a TRM. In addition, by reducing the time required to develop a TRM, the proposed approach supports quick and accurate decision-making by R&D managers.

Competitive Intelligence Analysis of Augmented Reality Technology Using Patent Information

Despite the growing attraction of augmented reality, trend analyses in this emerging technology have relied on qualitative literature review, failing to provide comprehensive competitive intelligence analysis using objective data. Therefore, tracing industrial competition trends in augmented reality will provide technology experts with a better understanding of evolving competition trends and insights for further technology and sustainable business planning. In this paper, we apply a topic modeling approach to 3595 Patents related to augmented reality technology to identify technology subjects and their knowledge stocks, thereby analyzing industrial competitive intelligence in light of technology subject and firm levels. As a result, we were able to obtain some findings from an inventional viewpoint: technological development of augmented reality will soon enter a mature stage, technologies of infrastructural requirements have been a focal subject since 2001, and several software firms and camera manufacturing firms have dominated the recent development of augmented reality.
