  • Big Data and Cloud Computing: New Wine or just New Bottles?
    Access, 2010
Co-Authors: Divyakant Agrawal, Amr El Abbadi, Sudipto Das
    Abstract:

Cloud computing is an extremely successful paradigm of service oriented computing and has revolutionized the way computing Infrastructure is abstracted and used. Three most popular cloud paradigms include: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). The concept however can also be extended to Database as a Service and many more. Elasticity, pay-per-use, low upfront investment, low time to market, and transfer of risks are some of the major enabling features that make cloud computing a ubiquitous paradigm for deploying novel applications which were not economically feasible in a traditional Enterprise Infrastructure settings. This has seen a proliferation in the number of applications which leverage various cloud platforms, resulting in a tremendous increase in the scale of the data generated as well as consumed by such applications. Scalable database management systems (DBMS) – both for update intensive application workloads, as well as decision support systems for descriptive and deep analytics– are thus a critical part of cloud Infrastructures.

  • An Approach for Investigating Perspective of Cloud Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
International Journal of Computer Applications, 2010
Co-Authors: Sushil Bhardwaj, Leena Jain, Sandeep Jain
    Abstract:

Cloud Computing extend the areas of virtualization, clustering, IT management, Web Architecture, Services-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and brings new dimension in extending utility computing. The primary aim of Cloud Computing is to provide mobility deployment of web-based application by means of easily accessible tools and interfaces for using and manipulating Infrastructure. Cloud-based services integrate globally scattered resources, which offer its users seamless services without any glitches. There are three general categories of services offered in cloud computing. They are Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). SaaS is becoming an increasingly ubiquitous software delivery model that support implementation of service-oriented architecture using Web services technologies. With SaaS gaining mainstream popularity, enhanced by the advent of web based computing options and virtualization platforms, the Enterprise Infrastructure is rapidly expanding into a large computing blurb-a 'computing cloud'. SaaS is the key setting for the rapid development that Cloud Computing is creating. In this paper we investigated SaaS by describing their characteristics, reasons for adoption and applications. SaaS model make possible for every customer to take advantages of provider's latest technological features without the burden of software maintenance, management, updates and upgrades. This paper also identifies the responsibilities of SaaS provider and the benefits to SaaS consumer.

  • Service-oriented Architecture at device level to support Evolvable Production Systems
2010 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2010
Co-Authors: Gonçalo Cândido, Jose Barata, Armando W. Colomboy, Francois Jammesz
    Abstract:

The Evolvable Production System (EPS) paradigm identifies guidelines and solutions to support the design, maintenance and evolution of complete industrial Infrastructures. At the same time, Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) approach is becoming a broadly deployed standard for business and Enterprise integration, while spreading across all layers of an Enterprise Infrastructure and disparate domains of application envisioning a unified solution. The application of SOA-compliant technology based upon open web standards can significantly enhance the interoperability and openness at device level. The crescent ubiquity of smart devices across several domains of application can raise important lifecycle issues concerning control, management, supervision and diagnosis. The merge of the previous two approaches can allow the creation of a complete ecosystem able to support this new methodology. From initial setup and deployment to lifecycle monitoring and diagnosis, each device needs to be taken in account and easily reachable. This document extols the association of both approaches in the pursuit of a common goal at device level for the domain of industrial automation outlining fundamental architectural principles and a device model to support it. Also, a proof-of-concept prototype is presented to confirm its expected applicability in a industrial automation use-case scenario.

  • SOA at device level in the industrial domain: Assessment of OPC UA and DPWS specifications
IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN), 2010
Co-Authors: Gonçalo Cândido, François Jammesy, Jose Barata Oliveira, Armando W. Colomboz
    Abstract:

Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) is increasingly relevant across several domains of application by promising systems openness and unification over a common design and communication paradigm. At device level, the application of SOA is carried, on one hand, by Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) and complementary web-based specifications oriented towards resource management, and, on the other hand, by OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) framework. These are currently the major candidates to be deployed at device level in a service-oriented industrial scenario. This document offers an overlook over both approaches, along with some complementary WS-* specifications through an extensive technical assessment. Also, it illustrates that neither one of these specifications can alone entirely cope with the requirements of service-oriented industrial domain device level and that a combined approach promises to deliver an important contribution. Synergies between the two sets of specifications for a more conformant solution are identified, and a convergence approach is enunciated in an era where it is imperative to avoid unnecessary layers of integration across Enterprise Infrastructure to ensure a more agile, lean and sustainable development.

  • Infrastructure-based location estimation in WLAN
2004 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04TH8733), 2004
    Co-Authors: S. Gami, Anjur S Krishnakumar, P. Krishnan
    Abstract:

This paper focuses on fundamental system deployment aspects of location estimation in 802.11-based wireless networks. We concentrate on adaptable Infrastructure-based approaches, where sniffers measure received signal strength from clients to locate them. Our implementation experience and experimental results show that sniffer-based location estimation is feasible and works well provided some important rules are followed. By studying data over a 6-month period, we observe that adaptation of models is necessary for good location estimation, and we show that our techniques enable location estimation with minimal profiling. We also present an intriguing client-assisted approach for location estimation where a client, APs and sniffers collaborate to locale a terminal in Enterprise (Infrastructure-mode) wireless networks.
