Only a few EM methods and tools have become successful products despite being theoretically sound and having certain success in application in practice. This grounded theory inquiry ponders on what factors influence the successful productization of EM methods and tools.     Organizations normally begin using Enterprise Modeling (EM) within the context of a development project of some sort, where an outside vendor and/or consultant provide the method and related IT tool usage competence. If an organization uses EM sufficiently frequently it may be motivated to develop in-house EM competence and to acquire and adopt an EM method. The paper is an experience paper. It defines what it means to adopt an EM method in an organization and describes the process of adopting and institutionalizing EM as an organizational strategy to support continuous improvement and development. The process consists of three activities: deciding that an EM method should be adopted as part of the organization’s set of institutionalized methods, electing a suitable method and implementing the method.

The authors combine a detailed description of the 4EM methodology with their concrete experience gathered in projects. Their book addresses the Modeling procedure, Modeling language and Modeling practices in a uniquely integrated approach. It provides practical advice on common challenges faced by Enterprises and offers a flexible EM method suitable for tackling those challenges. Much of the work presented stems from actual research projects and has been validated with scientific methods. The 4EM methodology has proven its practical value in a large number of successful development and/or change management projects in industry and the public sector.     Abstract:

    Today’s dynamic business environment presents Enterprises that wish to stay competitive with a great challenge. This is further complicated by rapidly advancing IT capabilities and the crucial role that IT plays in most organizations - a backbone for realizing visions and goals. The problem of eliminating the gap between business and IT within Enterprises, i.e. the problem of Business and IT Alignment (BITA), has been acknowledged as a contemporary challenge and actively elaborated by academics and practitioners. One practice that is used to facilitate BITA is Enterprise Modeling (EM), which is considered as a catalyzing practice for capturing, visualizing and analyzing different aspects of Enterprises. This paper presents a framework that illustrates the role of EM in the context of BITA and suggests recommendations to deal with EM challenges.

    When willing to prepare and to build operational Product Life cycle Management interoperability within a Dynamic Manufacturing Network (DMN) in a mature digital business ecosystem such as Aeronautic, Space and Defense, the approaches proposed by the Enterprise Application Interoperability are insufficient when willing to address the existing interoperability brakes Some of these brakes have been addressed in project such as IMAGINE and SIP@SystemX, allowing to experiment innovative way of using standards based Enterprise Modeling and also to identify some additional gaps for applying model base Enterprise Modeling to PLM interoperability within a DMN. After defining the business and the scientific contexts, the paper describes this new approach which consists in federating the usage of several PLM, Business, Information and ICT standard through the usage of an Enterprise Modeling standardized language, ArchiMate, and associated Modeling tool Archi created using ArchiMate as an EMF DSL. The defined methodology is based on producing a set of DMN blueprints and associated templates. Then, through model to model transformation, other more detailed models using more specialized languages are created and used for software component generation and deployment Enterprise hub platform based on standards. Using the methodology, the associated framework and the developed resulting from our research activity, we are now able to prepare and build interoperability within a DMN. Ability of preserving investment performed with the legacy and reducing risks associated to future evolution was demonstrated through IMAGINE Aeronautic Lab experimentation within SIP. Such experimentation also highlighted some issues related to model based engineering in such a context, and allowed identifying needs for new extensions of the federative PLM interoperability framework for Collaborative Networked Product Development initiated during the ATHENA project. It will be addressed in future work.

    The design meta-models for the CIMOSA reference architecture are presented. These meta-models are formalized with UML (Unified Modeling Language) and configured with Design patterns. Patterns allow the reuse of reference models and give them solid foundations. Indeed, the CIMOSA constructs are written using generic and trade patterns concerning production means, physical flows , information flows, resources, … UML is the most practical language to represent these patterns, thanks to its diagrammatic notations. which cover static aspects (e.g. objects, classes, components) and dynamic aspects (e.g. collaboration, scenarios, activities) of a system.

In this framework, the construct-based Enterprise Modeling system is adopted as the Modeling kernel tool. Firstly its basic idea and its system framework design are described and the Modeling architecture of its Modeling kernel tool CEMS is also introduced. Then its functional sub-modules are individually described in detail.
