The effect of sub-national institutions and international Entrepreneurial Capability on international performance of export-focused SMEs: Evidence from China and South Korea
Journal of International Entrepreneurship, 2017Co-Authors: Man Zhang, Qian Gao, Hyuksoo ChoAbstract:A number of recent studies have taken notice of the differences among sub-national institutions within the convoluted structures of Asian economies. The influence that the institutional environment exerts upon the performance of larger multi-national enterprises (MNEs) in Asian markets is well-documented; however, the relationship between sub-national institutions, international Entrepreneurial Capability (IEC), and international performance (IP) is a realm that has been less closely explored. This paper seeks to address that gap by assessing the effect of relevant sub-national institutions, namely, local government support, legal rules, government transparency, and government efficiency on the IEC of export-focused small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in two leading Asian economies. The researchers have devised and assessed a model that links sub-national institutions, their IEC and IP. To this end, data was collected from export-focused SMEs in two important emerging markets, China and South Korea. Three rounds of data collection resulted in 217 complete surveys. This paper discusses the analyzed data as well as the theoretical and managerial contributions of those findings.

A Conceptual Framework of Influencing Factors on International Entrepreneurial Capability in Emerging Markets
International Journal of Social Ecology and Sustainable Development, 2016Co-Authors: Man Zhang, Jungsook Kwon, Qian GaoAbstract:The increasing economic importance of born global firms makes it worthwhile to study what leads to their success in the emerging markets. The institutional environment defines, reacts, and limits Entrepreneurial opportunities, and also affects the speed and scope of Entrepreneurial Capability. Given the relatively low base of resource, these firms need to deploy some unique strategies such as utilizing information communication to survive in today's hostile and competitive international environment. Propositions regarding the relationships between institutional environment, international Entrepreneurial Capability, informal communication and their effect on the international performance were developed. Theoretical and managerial contribution and future research directions were also provided.

international Entrepreneurial Capability the measurement and a comparison between born global firms and traditional exporters in china
Journal of International Entrepreneurship, 2009Co-Authors: Man Zhang, Patriya Tansuhaj, Jim McculloughAbstract:This study presents the development and application of a new measure of international Entrepreneurial Capability. The data were collected from manufacturing firms in China, both traditional exporters and born global firms. Five key dimensions of international Entrepreneurial Capability were identified from the Capability and entrepreneurship literature. After scale purification and validation, this new measure was used to examine the relationship between international Entrepreneurial Capability and global market performance. Born global firms are statistically different from traditional firms along three dimensions: international learning Capability, international networking Capability, and international experience. Implications and future research directions are then provided.
