  • Financial development and Environmental Degradation: Does political regime matter?

    Abstract:

    Abstract The paper examines the determinants of Environmental Degradation for 26 African countries over the period 1985–2011. Using a wide range of econometric techniques (Chow test, cross-country regressions and the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM)), we find that Environmental Degradation (measured by CO2 emissions) in 2000–2011 experience a structural change which is far more intense than 1985–1999. Furthermore, cross-country regressions show that economic growth and urbanization are significant determinants of Environmental Degradation. Financial development, however, is a significant determinant of Environmental Degradation after accounting for political regime. Finally, the GMM estimator confirms a robust positive link between Environmental Degradation and economic growth. The policy implications of our findings are discussed in the concluding section.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The study examines the relationship between urbanization and environment Degradation while controlling for political environment in 38 African countries over the period 1970–2011. Using panel cointegration and causality analyses, we find that urbanization, Environmental Degradation (CO2 emissions) and political economy variables (democracy and bureaucratic quality) are cointegrated. Second, democracy and bureaucratic quality are effective in reducing Environmental Degradation in the long-run. Third, there are positive bi-directional relationships between CO2 emissions and affluence and population as shown by panel vector autoregressive and impulse response functions. However, a negative uni-directional relationship runs from CO2 emissions to bureaucratic quality. These results suggest that political economy variables are important in explaining the relationship between urbanization and Environmental Degradation.

    Abstract:

    This study examines the effect of urbanization, income, trade openness, and institutional quality (i.e., regime type and durability) on Environmental Degradation in Ghana over the period 1965–2011. Using the bounds test approach to cointegration and the Fully Modified Phillip-Hansen (FMPH) technique, the findings show that urbanization, income, trade openness, and institutional quality have long-run cointegration with Environmental Degradation. Further, the results show that income, trade openness, and institutional quality are negatively associated with Environmental Degradation. This suggests that income, trade openness, and institutional quality enhance Environmental performance. Urbanization, however, is positively related to Environmental Degradation. Additionally, long-run estimates conditioned on institutional quality reveal that the extent to which trade openness and urbanization enhance Environmental performance is largely due to the presence of quality institutions (or democratic institutions). Finally, controlling for structural breaks, we find that trade openness, urbanization, and regime type (i.e., democracy) improve Environmental performance significantly after the 1970s except for income.
