Environmental Health Hazard of arsenic on epididymis and ductus deferens in male Black Bengal Goats

A total of 12 male Black Bengal goats, in which 6 were collected from arsenic affected areas of Mymensingh district and another 6 were collected from hill tracts of Chittagong which were arsenic free.The goats were sacrificed by piercing carotid artery and the samples (Epididymis and Ductus deferens) were collected immediately. Samples were prepared and stained with haematoxylin and eosin stain technique to study the histology under light microscope. In the morphological study, measurement of length, width, breadth and weight of epididymis and ductus deferens were observed. The gross study revealed that there were slight variations in the gross morphology of epididymis and ductus deferens of arsenic affected Black Bengal goat, but this variation was statistically insignificant. In the histological study, arsenic affected goat showing increased thickness of epididymal covering (P<0.05) and trabeculae compared to control group of epididymis. The diameter of ductule efferentes of arsenic affected goat was narrower (P<0.01), width between intertubular space of ductuli efferentes was wider (P<0.01), lumen of ductules contain smaller in amount of spermatozoa compared to control group. The wall of the ductus deferens was thicker in arsenic affected goats than the control group (P<0.01). It may be concluded that Environmental Health Hazard of arsenic might have adverse effects on the male reproductive organs

The objective of this study was to examine public response to reports of elevated lead levels in school drinking water in St. Louis, Missouri via Twitter, a microblogging platform with over 320 million active users. We used a mixed-methods design to examine Twitter user status updates, known as “tweets,” from 18 August to 31 December 2016. The number of tweets each day was recorded, and Twitter users were classified into five user types (General Public, Journalist/News, Health Professional/Academic, Politician/Government Official, and Non-Governmental Organization). A total of 492 tweets were identified during the study period. The majority of discourse on Twitter occurred during the two-week period after initial media reports and was driven by members of the General Public. Thematic analysis of tweets revealed four themes: Information Sharing, Health Concerns, Sociodemographic Disparities, and Outrage. Twitter users characterized lead in school drinking water as an issue of Environmental inequity. The findings of this study provide evidence that social media platforms can be utilized as valuable tools for public Health researchers and practitioners to gauge public sentiment about Environmental Health issues, identify emerging community concerns, and inform future communication and research strategies regarding Environmental Health Hazards.

Environmental Health Hazard handling statistical and strategic concerns
Clinical Genetics, 2008Co-Authors: Jorgen HildenAbstract:Some key issues in industrial and Environmental Health risk research and the ensuing political decision process are discussed, with particular emphasis on statistical trouble spots: the acceptable risk concept; the welfare of future generations; burden of proof; research priorities; public visibility of risk and benefits; statistical extrapolations; multiple testing. The "tiny thief" phenomenon, discussed in detail, is the paradoxical fact that an almost harmless chemical may steal more of our Health than a grossly Hazardous chemical because the former is allowed to operate over a disproportionately long time span before being detected, if ever. The difficulty of proving that something is safe is reviewed. Finally, it is urged that politicians be taught the facts of scientific, including statistical, life; likewise, scientists should be made aware of the nature of political decision processes. Otherwise scientists will emigrate from Health Hazard research into areas of science where equivocal results and political interference are less common.

Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, 2011Co-Authors: Debendranath Guha Mazumder, Uma B DasguptaAbstract:Chronic arsenic toxicity (arsenicosis) as a result of drinking arsenic-contaminated groundwater is a major Environmental Health Hazard throughout the world, including India. A lot of research on Health effects, including genotoxic effect of chronic arsenic toxicity in humans, have been carried out in West Bengal during the last 2 decades. A review of literature including information available from West Bengal has been made to characterize the problem. Scientific journals, monographs, and proceedings of conferences with regard to human Health effects, including genotoxicity, of chronic arsenic toxicity have been reviewed. Pigmentation and keratosis are the specific skin diseases characteristic of chronic arsenic toxicity. However, in West Bengal, it was found to produce various systemic manifestations, such as chronic lung disease, characterized by chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive and/or restrictive pulmonary disease, and bronchiectasis; liver diseases, such as non cirrhotic portal fibrosis; polyneuropathy; peripheral vascular disease; hypertension; nonpitting edema of feet/hands; conjunctival congestion; weakness; and anemia. High concentrations of arsenic, greater than or equal to 200 μg/L, during pregnancy were found to be associated with a sixfold increased risk for stillbirth. Cancers of skin, lung, and urinary bladder are the important cancers associated with this toxicity. Of the various genotoxic effects of arsenic in humans, chromosomal aberration and increased frequency of micronuclei in different cell types have been found to be significant. Various probable mechanisms have been incriminated to cause DNA damage because of chronic arsenic toxicity. The results of the study in West Bengal suggest that deficiency in DNA repair capacity, perturbation of methylation of promoter region of p53 and p16 genes, and genomic methylation alteration may be involved in arsenic-induced disease manifestation in humans. P53 polymorphism has been found to be associated with increased occurrence of arsenic-induced keratosis. Of the various genes involved in the regulation of arsenic metabolism, single-nucleotide polymorphisms of purine nucleoside phosphorylase, in one study, showed increased occurrence of arsenicosis.
