    Abstract:

    Abstract The aim of this study is to test the Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC) hypothesis for 14 Asian countries spanning the period 1990–2011. We focused on how both income and policies in these countries affect the income–emissions (environment) relationship. The GMM methodology using panel data is employed in a multivariate framework to test the EKC hypothesis. The multivariate framework includes: CO2 emissions, GDP per capita, population density, land, industry shares in GDP, and four indicators that measure the quality of institutions. In terms of the presence of an inverted U-shape association between emissions and income per capita, the estimates have the expected signs and are statistically significant, yielding empirical support to the presence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis.

  • Water use trend analysis: A non-parametric method for the Environmental Kuznets Curve detection

    Abstract:

    Abstract Understanding of the trend in water use with possible relation to economic development is essential for forecasting future water demand and developing response strategies. The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis asserts that pollution emissions and natural resource use often follow an inverted-U shape. This paper develops a piecewise Mann-Kendall method to address inverted-U shape detection based on a non-parametric approach. P-values of the piecewise Mann-Kendall method statistic are identified using the exhaustion method, approximation method or analytic method, depending on the data size. Tests of the piecewise Mann-Kendall method on synthetic data indicate that the developed method provides reasonable type I error and power. The method is successfully applied to pattern detection in real water use. Water uses in a few countries and provinces in China present the Environmental Kuznets Curve. Unlike the traditional parametric quadratic regression method which is sensitive to data skewness, this non-parametric method offers consistent Environmental Kuznets Curve detection regardless of the original or logarithmic form of data being used.

    Abstract Evidence suggests that some pollutants follow an inverse-U-shaped pattern relative to countries’ incomes, a relationship that has been called an ‘Environmental Kuznets Curve’. We present a simple and straight-forward static model of the microfoundations of this relationship, in which the Curve depends on increasing returns in the technological link between consumption of a desired good and abatement of its undesirable byproduct. The Curve does not depend on the dynamics of growth, political institutions, or even externalities, and can be consistent with market failure or efficiency. We conclude by presenting empirical support for increasing returns to abating some common air pollutants.

    Abstract:

    This paper develops an overlapping generations model where consumption is the source of polluting emissions. Pollution stock accumulates with emissions but is partially assimilated by nature at each period. The assimilation capacity of nature is limited and vanishes beyond a critical level of pollution. We first show that multiple equilibria exist. More importantly, some exhibit irreversible pollution levels although an abatement activity is operative. Thus, the simple engagement of maintenance does not necessarily suffice to protect an economy against convergence toward a steady state having the properties of an ecological and economic poverty trap. In contrast with earlier related studies, the emergence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve is no longer the rule. Instead, we detect a sort of degenerated Environmental Kuznets Curve that corresponds to the equilibrium trajectory leading to the irreversible solution.

    This paper chronicles the story of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). The EKC proposes that indicators of Environmental degradation first rise, and then fall with increasing income per capita. However, recent evidence shows that developing countries are addressing Environmental issues, sometimes adopting developed country standards with a short time lag and sometimes performing better than some wealthy countries, and that the EKC results have a very flimsy statistical foundation. A new generation of decomposition models can help disentangle the true relations between development and the environment.

    Abstract Most existing estimates of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for sulfur, which use samples of mainly high-income countries, indicate a maximum emissions turning point at middle to lower high-income levels of GDP per capita. We use a larger and more globally representative sample than previous sulfur EKC studies. We find that sulfur emissions per capita are a monotonic function of income per capita when we use a global sample and an inverted-U shape function of income when we use a sample of high-income countries. A model estimated in first differences results in a monotonic EKC when estimated with both high-income and global samples. Reductions in emissions are time-related rather than income-related.
