    Abstract:

    Abstract Despite the importance that Environmental Management Systems have in the Environmental policy agenda, the debate on their effectiveness to improve Environmental performance (e.g. the reduction of polluting emissions) is still open among researchers and practitioners. Furthermore, no previous quantitative works have addressed the comparative study of the effectiveness of the two main reference standards that set requirements for an Environmental Management System: the international standard ISO 14001 and the European EMAS scheme. In order to fill this gap, this research paper investigates the impacts of EMAS and ISO 14001 on the reduction of carbonic anhydride emissions on 229 energy intensive plants in Italy. By applying a rigorous statistical method, the results suggest that the implementation of an Environmental Management System in energy intensive industries has a clear influence on Environmental performance both in the short and in the long term, but a different effect of ISO 14001 and EMAS on Environmental performance occurs.

    This paper analyses the case of ISO 14001 certification in the City of Marrakech (Morocco). The case study defines the methods and approaches used in the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS), highlighting what were the main differences and the rationale and expected benefits of the certification process for the city. The paper aims to compare this experience with similar experiences of Western local authorities described in the literature by analysing drivers, motivations, benefits and barriers in EMS adoption. To achieve this goal, the paper reports, among other results, the outcome of a survey of the Environmental perception of the City population carried out in the ISO 14001 implementation in order to identify how and if the attainment of ISO 14001 certification could be valorised by the City of Marrakech with regard to the citizens’ perception.     The EMAS Regulation (Reg 761/01 EC) is EU scheme implemented by the European Commission since 1993 and it is for the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) by any organization. The EMS was originally proposed by the European Commission and by the ISO as the frontrunner of a series of policy tools that enable companies to simultaneously pursue Environmental objectives and competitive targets in a synergetic way. Based on the unique dataset of the EVER project, this paper investigates whether or not an EMS implemented within the EMAS Regulation has any effect on firm performance both from an Environmental and a competitive point of view. Our econometric analysis shows the positive impact of a welldesigned Environmental Management System on Environmental performance and, as a consequence, on technical and organizational innovations. Effects on other competitive variables such as market performance, resource productivity and intangible assets are not strongly supported.

    ABSTRACT Nowadays, the protection and care of the environment is playing an important role in our society, the organizations of today, not only care about their economic growth, but also to preserve the environment in the development of their daily activities. When an organization has an Environmental Management System (EMS), its managerial approach is aligned with the goals and objectives that the company proposes, attributing a series of benefits, be they economic, market share, improvement of corporate image, situation regulatory, etc. This thesis deals with the implementation of an Environmental Management System based on the new ISO 14001: 2015 version of the company SERVICIOS PERUANOS INTEGRALES ECOLOGICOS S.A.C. - SPINE S.A.C, who is in charge of providing the Service of Collection, Transport and Final Disposal of Biocontaminated Solid Residues of the health establishments. For this implementation, the company SPINE S.A.C. hired a consultant, who made an initial diagnosis of the organization to see compliance with the requirements based on ISO 14001: 2015, so as the applicable legal requirements, giving us an orientation of the current situation in which The company performs the planning and design of the Environmental Management System. The design will begin with the definition of the scope of the Environmental Management System (EMS), continuing with the design of the Environmental policy, objectives, goals and performance indicators for the evaluation of the company, its Environmental condition, the identification of Environmental aspects, elaborating the integrated manual of Management in which you contemplate the Environmental scope and culminating with an internal audit for the measurement of the Environmental Management System, in order to obtain the ISO 14001: 2015 CERTIFICATION, which will be obtained through an external audit.     Abstract:

    Abstract Despite the importance that Environmental Management Systems have in the Environmental policy agenda, the debate on their effectiveness to improve Environmental performance (e.g. the reduction of polluting emissions) is still open among researchers and practitioners. Furthermore, no previous quantitative works have addressed the comparative study of the effectiveness of the two main reference standards that set requirements for an Environmental Management System: the international standard ISO 14001 and the European EMAS scheme. In order to fill this gap, this research paper investigates the impacts of EMAS and ISO 14001 on the reduction of carbonic anhydride emissions on 229 energy intensive plants in Italy. By applying a rigorous statistical method, the results suggest that the implementation of an Environmental Management System in energy intensive industries has a clear influence on Environmental performance both in the short and in the long term, but a different effect of ISO 14001 and EMAS on Environmental performance occurs.

    Abstract:

    The EMAS Regulation (Reg 761/01 EC) is EU scheme implemented by the European Commission since 1993 and it is for the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) by any organization. The EMS was originally proposed by the European Commission and by the ISO as the frontrunner of a series of policy tools that enable companies to simultaneously pursue Environmental objectives and competitive targets in a synergetic way. Based on the unique dataset of the EVER project, this paper investigates whether or not an EMS implemented within the EMAS Regulation has any effect on firm performance both from an Environmental and a competitive point of view. Our econometric analysis shows the positive impact of a welldesigned Environmental Management System on Environmental performance and, as a consequence, on technical and organizational innovations. Effects on other competitive variables such as market performance, resource productivity and intangible assets are not strongly supported.
