    Abstract:

    Species of Mimapsilopa from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where six new species were discovered and herein are diagnosed and described. To facilitate identification of species, we have included a diagnosis of the tribe Discomyzini and of Mimapsilopa and have also provided an annotated key to the New World genera of the tribe. We have also provided photos of representative specimens, illustrations of structures of the male terminalia and a distribution map for all included species.

  • A review of Scatellini (Diptera: Ephydridae) from Brazil

    Abstract:

    Scatellini was proposed by Wirth & Stone, 1956 and currently includes 242 described species in nine genera­. The tribe has representatives in all biogeographic regions and about 70 species occur in the Neotropical Region. Prior to this study, only two species were recorded from Brazil: Scatella obscura and Limnellia itatiaia. In this paper, species of Scatellini from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where six new species have been discovered and are described herein: Scatella praia, S. plaumanni, S. rara, Scatophila darrowae, S. dianneae, and S. prainha. To facilitate identification of the tribe and included genera and species, we have included diagnoses of these taxa and have also provided an annotated key to the Neotropical genera in Scatellini. We have also provided illustrations of structures of the male terminalia of all included species of the genus Scatophila.

    AbstractThe shore-fly genus Oedenopiforma Cogan is reviewed, including new information on Oedenopiforma argentea (distribution), Oedenopiforma javana (comb. nov. and O. orientalissyn. nov.), and Oedenopiforma vockerothi (sp. nov. from United Arab Emirates). Structures of the male terminalia of these three species, a diagnosis of the genus, and a key to the included genera of Dryxini and species of Oedenopiforma are presented.

Nous presentons des descriptions des structures des derniers segments abdominaux des males de ces trois especes, une diagnose du genre, ainsi qu'une clef d'identification des genres inclus dans les Dryxini et des especes d'Oedenopiforma.

    Abstract:

    Species of the shore-fly Parydra Stenhammar, 1844 from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where one new species, Parydra arcuata sp. nov. - state of Parana, municipality of Castro (8 km N, 24o45.3'S, 49o58.9'W) -, has been discovered and is herein described. To facilitate identification of species, we have included a diagnosis of the genus. We have also provided illustrations of structures of the male terminalia for all included species.

    Abstract Four new species of parasitic fungi belonging to the genus Stigmatomyces occurring on different species of insects of the order Diptera from Sierra Leone are described. These are S. brevis, parasitic on Hecamedoides pusillus Canzoneri (Ephydridae), S. livii, parasitic on Xanthocanace sp. (Canacidae), S. longimasculus, parasitic on Ochthera pilimana Becker (Ephydridae) and S. typopsilopae, parasitic on Typopsilopa dimidiata Canzoneri et Meneghini (Ephydridae).

    Four new species of Stigmatomyces (Ascomycota, Laboulbeniomycetes, Stigmatomycetinae) parasitic on flies (Diptera) are described. These are S. aphaniosomae, parasitic on an undescribed species of Aphaniosoma (Chyromyidae) from Jordan; S. deemingii, parasitic on Milichia pubescens (Milichiidae) from Yemen; S. macanus, parasitic on Phortica spp. (Drosophilidae) from Taiwan; and S. mosilli, parasitic on Mosillus subsultans (Ephydridae) from Pakistan. Chyromyidae is a new host family for Laboulbeniales, and S. aphaniosomae is the first of the Laboulbeniales to be reported from Jordan.

    Three new Laboulbeniales occurring on Brazilian Diptera are described. These are Stigmatomyces cearensis, parasitic on Guttipsilopa (Nesopsilopa) stonei (Mathis & Wirth) (Ephydridae); Stigmatmyces gratiellae, parasitic on Cressonomyia meridionalis (Cresson) (Ephydridae); and Stigmatomyces litoralis, parasitic on Glenanthe caribea Mathis and Paraglenanthe bahamensis Wirth (both Ephydridae). Fifteen other dipterophilous Laboulbeniales are reported for the first time from Brazil. The synonomy between Stigmatomyces notiphilae Thaxt. and S. leucophengae Thaxt. also is proposed.

    Three new Laboulbeniales (Ascomycetes) occurring on shore-flies (Ephydridae) are described. These are Stigmatomyces bettellae, parasitic on Parydra aureola, S. hydrochasmatis, parasitic on Hydrochasma incisum, and S. visinonii, parasitic on Dimecoenia spp. Twelve other Laboulbeniales parasitic on Diptera are reported, ten of which are new records for South America: Ilytheomyces anomalus, I. calycinus, I. lingu- latus, L manubriolatus, S. constrictus, S. crassicollis, S. discocerinae, S. entomophilus, S. ilytheae, S. limnopho- rae, S. pentandrus, and S. rugosus.

  • Effects of Three Vegetation Management Strategies on Shore-Flies (Diptera: Ephydridae) in Newly Constructed Treatment Wetlands

    We tested the effects of three vegetation management strategies for constructed treatment wetlands on adult shore-fly (Diptera: Ephydridae) successional occurrence and emergence in southern California. Before flooding with effluent from a nearby wastewater treatment plant, eight 0.1-ha research cells were randomly assigned to (1) control cells which were burned to reduce the above ground plant biomass, (2) scoured cells which were burned and then scoured with a rock bucket attached to a backhoe, and (3) hummock cells which were burned and scoured before the placement of earthen mounds that provided shallow areas to concentrate vegetation growth within a small area. Emergence traps and pan traps were used simultaneously to capture adult Ephydridae from July 1998 to September 1999. Twenty-eight species of ephydrids from 23 genera were collected; the cumulative number of shore-fly taxa reached its maximum at 135 d after flooding, and exhibited a hyperbolic pattern over time. Only Brachydeutera sturtevanti Wirth differed significantly in its successional mean occurrence in pan traps among vegetation management treatments, being virtually absent from hummocked cells during 1998 but becoming one of the numerically dominant taxa in all treatments by August 1999. Both emergence and pan traps in the hummocked cells captured significantly fewer B. sturtevanti and Notiphila spp. in the other treatments during 1998, but there were no differences in numbers collected among the vegetation management treatments during 1999. Vegetation management significantly slowed the appearance of Ephydridae in constructed treatment wetlands, but only a short period of time (
