    Abstract:

    The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), which was extirpated from its native North American prairie habitat during the 1980s, is being reintroduced to the wild because of a successful captive-breeding program. To enhance propagation, the reproductive biology of this endangered species is being studied intensively. The typical life span of the black-footed ferret is approximately 7 yr. Female fecundity declines after 3 yr of age, but the influence of age on male reproduction is unknown. In this study, testis volume, seminal traits, sperm morphology, and serum testosterone were compared in 116 males from 1 to 7 yr of age living in captivity. Results demonstrated that testes volume during the peak breeding season was similar (P > 0.05) among males 1 to 5 yr of age, reduced (P 0.05) in older males. Histological comparison of testicular/Epididymal Tissue from 5- and 7-yr-old black-footed ferrets confirmed that the interval between these two ages may represent a transitional period to reproductive senescence. In summary, functional reproductive capacity of male black-footed ferrets exceeds that of females by at least 2 yr. Testes and seminal quality are indistinguishable among males 1 to 5 yr of age, with progressive reproductive aging occurring thereafter.

    Aberrant Epididymal Tissue is uncommon and may be associated with an undescended testis. To the best of our knowledge, aberrant Epididymal Tissue has not been described in a testicular appendix. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy with left cryptorchidism who underwent a homolateral orchidopexy. At operation, the surgeon removed a pedunculated appendix testis containing an Epididymal heterotopia. This Wolffian-derivative Tissue was confirmed by the diffuse strong CD10 reactivity of the luminal border of the epithelial cells. Awareness of this aberrant Tissue avoids misinterpretation as a transected functional reproductive structure.

    Phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein (PBP) has been described previously in the male reproductive tract, where it has been implicated in the biogenesis and maintenance of antigen segregation of membranes. In the present study we have used a specific antiserum to PBP to determine its expression and localisation in the adult and prepubertal rat testis and epididymis by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. In the adult rat testis, PBP was localised to step 17-19 elongating spermatids, residual bodies, and interstitial Leydig cells. In the adult epididymis, PBP was localised to epithelial cells of the caput, corpus, and cauda regions and to the cytoplasmic droplets of spermatozoa in the lumen of the initial segment, caput, and corpus epididymidis. In prepubertal animals, PBP was expressed in both testes and epididymides from day 1 and day 3 postpartum, respectively (day 3 being the earliest Epididymal Tissue taken). In prepubertal testes, PBP was localised to Leydig cells from day 1 postpartum and was not detected in any other cell type until the differentiation of elongate spermatids, when it was detected in step 17-19 elongating spermatids. These data suggest that PBP may be involved in the organisation of sperm membranes during spermiogenesis. The presence of PBP in Leydig cells, however, suggests diverse roles for this protein as a lipid carrier or binding protein.

    Abstract:

    Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder that rarely involves the genitourinary tract. To date, only 59 cases of histologically proven sarcoidosis involving the male reproductive tract have been reported in the literature. We present here a case of bilateral Epididymal sarcoidosis without radiographic evidence of intrathoracic lesion. A 46-year-old man presented with a one-week history of painless bilateral scrotal swellings. Physical examination detected multiple elastic firm nodules on both sides of the scrotum which showed no tenderness. The nodules seemed to involve the entire bilateral epididymides. Some irregularly shaped hypoechoic masses in the bilateral epididymides were identified on gray scale ultrasonography. On magnetic resonance images, the bilateral epididymides were seen to be enlarged, heterogeneous and nodular without any signs of testicular involvement. The lesion showed a slightly high signal intensity on the T2-weighted image. Pathological evaluation following bilateral epididymectomy found non-caseating epithelioid cell granulomas with giant cells in Epididymal Tissue, thus confirming a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Gallium-67 scanning showed additional small hot spots in the anterior chest wall and extremities. Open biopsy of a superficial papular lesion in the dermis of the right upper arm was performed and pathological findings indicated sarcoid granulomas. This report also includes a review of the literature pertaining to sarcoidosis of the male reproductive tract.
