Microbiologically Induced Corrosion Associated with the Wet Storage of Subsea Pipelines (Wet Parking)

To ensure pipelines remain within design specifications, pipelines are filled with treated fluids until commissioning takes place or until operations are restored. These lay-up periods are referred to as wet parking and are common to any subsea operation. The implications of this practice lie in the associated risk of chemical degradation when the wet lay-up period is prolonged beyond the anticipated date of start-up. In addition, Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion in the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry if wet parking or pipeline suspension is expected to take place after several years of production, the risk of corrosion increases due to contamination of the pipe internal surface with hydrocarbons, deposits, and biofilms. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate chemical treatment for preservation of subsea pipelines and subsequent wet lay-up poses a significant dilemma for offshore engineers. This scaling may lead to a lowering of heat transfer efficiency, increased energy consumption and unscheduled Equipment Shutdown. In order to prevent potential scaling problems it is, therefore, important to understand the mechanism of calcium carbonate deposition. This paper is an extension of previous work on the understanding of calcium carbonate crystal formation, aggregation and deposition. It describes the application of an inline technique based on Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement (FBRM) to determine the rate of calcium carbonate formation. FBRM provides a real time measurement of the dimension and number of crystals and this technique has proven to be a sensitive method with which to monitor the initial stages of the scale formation process. The effect of initial calcium ion concentration and temperature on the scaling rate has been determined, and these inline results validated from complementary offline scale measurement techniques.

This scale can create technical problems, including the increased energy in consumption and unscheduled Equipment Shutdown. This paper presents the crystallization of barium sulfate and this experiment was focused on evaluating the effect of solution concentration and malic acid to the induction time and barium sulfate crystallization. In this research, the experiments on the growth of barium sulfate scale in the pipe test was conducted by reacting BaCl 2 and Na 2 SO 4 at concentrations of 3500, 4000, 4500 and 5000 ppm Ba2+, flow rate (40 ml / min), temperature (50 °C), while malic acid (0, 5, 10 ppm) was added to the solution as a scale inhibitor. BaSO 4 scale formation was observed with the declining value of the conductivity of the solution. BaSO 4 crystal shape was observed from the results of morphological studies performed using SEM, further analysis of the micro-crystal composition using EDX and XRD analysis was used to prove the crystal produced. The SEM imaging shows that the morphology crystals have a star-like particle, while XRD analysis confirmed that the pure barite crystal (barite) was produced during the experiments. Obviously, the malic acid inhibited the crystal growth of barite.

The structure uses a suitable data collection device provided by a Brazilian manufacturer, the data collected was stored in a database (DB), and then imported into the process mining software “DISCO®” to verify if the generated information is relevant and can be used for decision making. The proposed structure was able to create paths for the extraction and availability of the data in a satisfactory way since it presents interoperability between the collection mechanism and the process mining tools. Based on the data collected, it was verified that the structure, despite meeting the expectation, needs to be restructured in such a way that the inserted data are registered according to the analysis structure of the process mining tools. This issue is important because the amount of data generated is very expressive and the manual cleaning of the data would require a lot of time.

IEEE International Conference on Dielectrics, 2020Co-Authors: T B Rodrigues, H P Amorim, Ricardo Tanscheit, Marley M B R VellascoAbstract:Nowadays the identification of substation surge arresters (SA) and current transformers (CT) with partial discharges (PD) is carried out by a specialist, who analyzes the signals over time and compares them to those observed in laboratory with a characteristic PD signature. It makes use of a technique developed in the Electrical Energy Research Center (CEPEL), Brazil, that employs high frequency sensors, without the need to shut down the Equipment. This paper proposes a new methodology for automatic detection of PD in these Equipment. It is based on the extraction of discriminating characteristics of the signals measured in SA and CT over time and on the use of classification techniques standards capable of telling apart signals from Equipment with and without internal PD. Energy companies may therefore better manage Equipment replacement in case of indication of operational failure, thus increasing the reliability of the electrical system.
