Similarity in flight behaviour between the honeybee Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: apidae) and its presumed mimic, the dronefly Eristalis tenax (Diptera: syrphidae).
The Journal of experimental biology, 2001Co-Authors: Y. C. Golding, A R Ennos, M. EdmundsAbstract:It is generally accepted that the dronefly Eristalis tenax is a Batesian mimic of the honeybee Apis mellifera. Previous work has established that the foraging behaviour of droneflies is more similar to that of its model than to that of other more closely related flies, suggesting that behaviour may be important in the mimicry. Locomotor mimicry has been demonstrated in mimetic Heliconius butterflies but not in hoverflies. This study therefore investigated aspects of the flight behaviour of Eristalis tenax, Apis mellifera and two other flies, Syrphus ribesii and a Musca sp. Insects were filmed foraging on Helichrysum bracteum flowers, and flight sequences were analysed to determine flight velocities, flight trajectories and the percentage of time spent hovering. It was found that the flight behaviour of droneflies was more similar to that of honeybees than to that of the other flies. This suggests that the flight behaviour of Eristalis tenax may be mimetic.

Behavioural mimicry of honeybees (Apis mellifera) by droneflies (Diptera: Syrphidae: Eristalis spp.).
Proceedings. Biological sciences, 2000Co-Authors: Y. C. Golding, M. EdmundsAbstract:Droneflies (Syrphidae: Eristalis spp. resemble honeybees (Apis mellifera) in appearance and have often been considered to be Batesian mimics. This study used a focal watch technique in order to compare the foraging behaviour of droneflies Eristalis tenax, Eristalis pertinax, Eristalis arbustorum and Eristalis nemorum) whilst they were feeding on patches of flowers with the behaviour of honeybees and other hymenopterans and dipterans. It was found that, on a range of plant species, the time droneflies spent on individual flowers and the time spent flying between them was more similar to that of honeybees than to the times of other hymenopterans and dipterans. These results suggest that dronefly behaviour has evolved to become more similar to that of honeybees and they support the hypothesis that droneflies are Batesian mimics.

A campylobacteriosis és a salmonellosis heti átlaghőmérséklet által meghatározott szezonalitásának és az Eristalis tenax (Diptera: Syrphidae) éves fenológiájának összehasonlítása
'Akademiai Kiado Zrt.', 2016Co-Authors: Trájer Attila, Schoffhauzer JuditAbstract:Absztrakt Bevezetés: A környezeti hőmérséklet és a Diptera fajok aktivitása a bakteriális bélfertőzések szezonalitásának legfontosabb faktorai. Célkitűzés: A szerzők tanulmányukban a campylobacteriosis és a salmonellosis incidenciaértékeinek alakulását elemezték a heti átlaghőmérséklet függvényében, összevetve a potenciális vektor Eristalis tenax éves fenológiájával. Módszer: A megbetegedési adatokat az Országos Epidemiológiai Központ epidemiológiai információs hetilapjában közölt adattáblákból nyerték. A Magyarországot lefedő rácsra átlagolt heti átlaghőmérsékleti adatok a „European Climate Assessment Dataset” adatbázisból származtak. Eredmények: A campylobacteriosis-incidencia gyenge (r2 = 0,39), a salmonellosi-sincidencia erős (r2 = 0,71) összefüggést mutatott a nyolc héttel korábbi heti átlaghőmérséklet-értékekkel. Következtetések: Az Eristalis tenax fenológiájának és a tanulmányozott bakteriális bélfertőzések incidenciájának összevetése arra az eredményre vezetett, hogy a Salmonella és Campylobacter fajok átvitele szempontjából elsősorban a késő tavaszi és nyári hónapokban juthat jelentősebb szerep a Diptera fajoknak, különös tekintettel a július és augusztus hónapokra.
