An Analysis of Arterial Disease Mortality and BUPA Health Screening Data in Men, in Relation to Outdoor Temperature

Laboratory studies have shown that cold exposure causes an increase in blood pressure, cholesterol and Erythrocyte Count. However, whether the mild cold exposures received during everyday life are sufficient to cause such changes is unclear. 2. To test this, outdoor temperatures in central London between 1986 and 1992 were related to both haematological and blood pressure data on 50–69-year-old men attending BUPA health screening examinations in London, and to mortality in South-East England. Since any association with temperature may be an artifact due to common, temperature-independent, annual rhythms in the parameters, these data were also analysed after removal of these circannual components by digital filtering. 3. It was found that short-term falls in temperature produced significant increases in Hb, Erythrocyte Count, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular Hb concentration, serum albumin, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and significant decreases in mean corpuscular volume and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Mean corpuscular Hb, leucocyte Count, platelet Count and serum cholesterol concentrations were unchanged. Time-series analysis showed that these changes occurred almost immediately in response to a fall in temperature, but persisted for longer intervals of up to 1–2 days. 4. Mortalities from ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease were also significantly increased by short-term falls in temperature. 5. These findings indicate that in the general population the cold exposures of normal life are sufficient to induce significant and prolonged haemoconcentration and hypertension, which may explain why deaths from arterial disease are more prevalent in the winter.

Six elderly (66-71 years) and six young (20-23 years) subjects (half of each group women) were cooled for 2 h in moving air at 18 degrees C to investigate possible causes of increased mortality from arterial thrombosis among elderly people in cold weather. Compared with thermoneutral control experiments, skin temperature (trunk) fell from 35.5 to 29.5 degrees C, with little change in core temperature. 2. Erythrocyte Count rose in the cold from 4.29 to 4.69 x 10(12)/l, without a change in mean corpuscular volume, indicating a 14% or 438 ml decline in plasma volume; increased excretion of water, Na+ and K+ acCounted for loss of only 179 ml of extracellular water. 3. Plasma cholesterol and fibrinogen concentrations rose in the elderly subjects from 4.90 mmol/l and 2.97 g/l (control) to 5.45 mmol/l and 3.39 g/l in the cold, and in the young subjects from 3.33 mmol/l and 1.84 g/l (control) to 3.77 mmol/l and 2.07 g/l in the cold. Increases were significant for the elderly subjects, the young subjects and the group as a whole, except for cholesterol in the young subjects, and all were close to those expected from the fall in plasma volume. 4. Plasma levels of Protein C and factor X did not increase significantly in the cold in the elderly subjects, young subjects, or the group as a whole. 5. The results suggest that loss of plasma fluid in the cold concentrates major risk factors for arterial thrombosis, while small molecules, including protective Protein C, redistribute to interstitial fluid.

Haematological response to supplements of riboflavin and ascorbic acid in Nigerian young adults

Okike, Yinka YusufAbstract:The effect of supplementing a regular diet with riboflavin or a combination of riboflavin and ascorbic acid on haematological indices was studied in 27 young Nigerian adults. Vitamin supplementation produced a significant increase (p less than 0.001) in haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit level and Erythrocyte Count. Both males and females responded similarly to the supplementation. The effect of riboflavin was similar to the combined effect of riboflavin and ascorbic acid. A significant association suggestive of enhanced erythropoiesis existed between Hb concentration and Erythrocyte Count in vitamin-supplemented subjects (r = 0.9722, p less than 0.002). The withdrawal of vitamin(s) supplements significantly diminished Hb concentration, haematocrit level and Erythrocyte Count to values similar to placebo. The data further showed that, even in malarial infection, Hb concentration, Hct level and Erythrocyte Count were maintained if high vitamin status was established through supplementation.

American journal of hypertension, 1991Co-Authors: B O Göbel, A Schulte-göbel, B Weisser, K Glänzer, H Vetter, R DüsingAbstract:The relationship between arterial blood pressure and red blood cell variables was investigated in 1013 unselected persons with a blood pressure range of 90 to 225 mm Hg systolic and 50 to 145 mm Hg diastolic. Statistically significant correlations were demonstrated between mean (as well as systolic and diastolic) arterial blood pressure and red blood cell Count (r = 0.27; P less than .0001), hematocrit (r = 0.28; P less than .0001), and hemoglobin concentration (r = 0.29; P less than .0001). Average arterial blood pressure was higher in men than in women (133 +/- 16/83 +/- 10 v 124 +/- 16/79 +/- 9 mm Hg, P less than .0001) and this was associated with higher values for Erythrocyte Count, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit in men as compared to women. The significant correlation of blood pressure and hematocrit, which represents one important determinant of blood viscosity, points to a role for rheological factors in the long-term control of blood pressure. Moreover, it might be speculated that the sex difference in blood pressure as observed in the present study may be due, at least in part, to stimulated erythropoiesis in men as compared to women.

One hundred broiler chickens were divided into five groups by randomized and four replications of each. Feed supplement combinations were R0 (basal), R1 (garlic and turmeric), R2 (garlic and zinc), R3 (turmeric and zinc), and R4 (turmeric, garlic and zinc). Blood sample was taken at the age of 6 weeks after treatment to determine total Erythrocyte Count, hematocrit value, and hemoglobin concentration. The result showed that total Erythrocyte Count in group of R3 (turmeric powder 1.5% and zinc oxide 120 ppm) were significantly higher than R0 (P<0.05) were 3.32±0.73x106/il. Total Erythrocyte Count, hematocrit value, and hemoglobin concentration group of R2 and R3 were tended to be higher than R0, meanwhile group of R4 did not different from R0. Feed supplemented with hebal and zink would increase the total Erythrocyte Count, hematocrit value, and hemoglobin concentration in broiler chicken.

Effect of chronic vanadium administration in drinking water to rats
Biometals, 1993Co-Authors: Halina Zaporowska, Wacław Wasilewski, Maria SŀotwińskaAbstract:Two-month old Wistar rats of both sexes received, as sole drinking liquid, an aqueous solution of ammonium metavanadate (AMV) at a concentration of 0.01 or 0.05 mg V cm^−3 (0.2 or 1.0 mM) for a period of 4 weeks. It was calculated that the animals took up doses of 1.5 and 5–6 mg V kg body weight^−1 24 h^−1, respectively. Food and AMV solution consumption in the experimental groups was similar to food and water consumption in the control group. A statistically significant decrease of consumption of AMV solution at a concentration of 0.05 mg V cm^−3 was noted only in males. Hematological examination demonstrated a decrease in the Erythrocyte Count, hemoglobin level and hematocrit index. This decrease in the Erythrocyte Count was associated with an increased percentage of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood of the animals drinking the solution with a higher vanadium content. Biochemical analyses demonstrated a decrease of l -ascorbic acid levels in the plasma and Erythrocytes of animals drinking the AMV solutions. A distinct tendency for the malonyldialdehyde level to increase in the blood was also observed. Among the enzymes examined in the Erythrocytes (catalase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase and δ -aminolevulinic acid dehydratase [ALA-D]) only ALA-D activity was depressed.
