    Abstract Treatment with bovine somatotropin (bST) during Estrous Synchronization increased fertility and prolificacy in sheep. In the present study, a single dose of bST 5 days before the end of progestin treatment improved cleavage and embryo development. Stage of Estrous cycle was synchronized in ewes (n = 32) with progestin and superovulation was induced by use of FSH. Five days before the end of progestin treatment, ewes were randomly assigned to two groups: bST group (n = 16) received a depot injection of 125 mg of bST sc (Lactotropina, Elanco, Mexico) and the control group (n = 16) received saline solution. Estrous was detected with rams fitted with an apron every 2 h and Estrous sheep were mated every 8 h whilst in Estrous. Embryos were recovered on Day 7 post mating, assessed microscopically and fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde. Cell number in blastocysts was counted after Hoechst 33342 staining. Plasma concentrations of IGF-I, insulin and progesterone were determined in eight sheep per group from the day of bST treatment to the day of embryo recovery. Cleavage rate, percentage of transferable embryos (transferable embryos/cleaved) and percentage of embryos reaching the blastocyst stage (blastocyst/cleaved) were compared between groups by logistic regression. In the present study, the objective was to assess whether bST given 5 days before the end of progestin-based Estrous Synchronization improves prolificacy and lambing rate in sheep. Pelibuey ewes ( n  = 92) exhibiting Estrous cycles at regular intervals received an intravaginal sponge containing 45 mg of FGA for 12 days. Five days before sponge withdrawal, ewes were treated with either 125 mg of bST sc (bST group; n  = 47) or saline solution (control; n  = 45). After the sponge was removed, ewes were observed for estrus and subsequently mated twice. Lambing rate and prolificacy was determined at birth. Blood samples were taken from the time of treatment until day 15 after estrus in eight ewes from the bST group and nine from the control group. Concentrations of IGF-I were determined by immunoradiometric assay and progesterone by RIA. Treatment with bST increased ( P P P  > 0.05). IGF-I concentrations were greater ( P P  > 0.05) between groups. It is concluded that a single dose of bST 5 days before progestin withdrawal increases lambing rate and prolificacy in sheep. These effects are associated with an increase in circulating concentrations of IGF-I.

    Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ewe estrus Synchronization protocols including combinations of controlled internal drug releasing ( CIDR ) inserts for 5 d, GnRH, and PG on concentrations of progesterone ( P4 ) and reproductive performance of ewes during different breeding seasons. Experiment 1 was conducted during the transition season (August–October) and Experiment 2 was conducted during the anEstrous season (April–May). In both experiments ewes received 1 of 4 treatments: (1) untreated ( CON ); (2) CIDR (0.3 g P4) insert ( CT ); (3) CIDR and PG at CIDR removal ( CTP ); or (4) GnRH at CIDR insertion and PG at CIDR removal ( CTG ). Rams equipped with marking harnesses were introduced at CIDR removal (d 0) and ewes were observed for breeding marks twice daily at 0800 h and 1700 h. In Experiment 1, days to estrus was greater ( P  ≤ 0.01) in CON (9.5 ± 1.10 d) and CTP (6.5 ± 1.04 d) compared with CT (3.6 ± 1.03 d). No differences ( P  = 0.27) were detected in pregnancy rate within the first 17 d of the breeding season for CON, CT, CTP, and CTG treatments (37 ± 7.8%, 62 ± 7.5%, 56 ± 8.1%, and 46 ± 7.7%, respectively). Similarly, no differences ( P  ≥ 0.28) were detected among treatments for lambing rate and prolificacy. Contrasts for all CIDR treatments compared to controls determined that CIDR treated ewes had less days to estrus and lambing ( P  ≤ 0.05) than control ewes. In Experiment 2, days to estrus was greater ( P  ≤ 0.02) in CON (6.5 ± 1.05 d) and CTP (5.9 ± 0.88 d) compared with CTG (3.0 ± 0.88 d). No differences were detected ( P  ≥ 0.23) among treatments for overall percentage of ewes exhibiting estrus. No differences ( P  = 0.79) in pregnancy rate within the first 17 d of the breeding season were detected among treatments (42 ± 12.4%, 37 ± 11.3%, 35 ± 11.1%, and 50 ± 10.9% for CON, CT, CTP, and CTG, respectively). No differences ( P  ≥ 0.44) were observed among treatments in overall lambing rate and prolificacy. In conclusion, inserting a CIDR for 5 d prior to ram introduction regardless of the use of PG or GnRH, reduced the interval to estrus compared with untreated ewes but did not impact overall pregnancy rates, lambing rates, or prolificacy.

    : Partial budget analysis was used to determine the economic outcome of estrus Synchronization (ES) and timed artificial insemination (TAI) in commercial cow-calf production. Suckled beef cows (n = 1,197) from 8 locations were assigned randomly within each location to 1 of 2 treatment groups: 1) cows were inseminated artificially after Synchronization of ovulation using the CO-Synch + CIDR protocol, which includes a 100-μg injection of GnRH (OvaCyst; TevaAnimal Health, St. Joseph, MO) when a controlled internal drug-releasing device (CIDR; Pfizer Animal Health, New York, NY) containing 1.38 g of progesterone was inserted. The CIDR was removed 7 d later, and cows received a 25-mg injection of PGF(2α) (PGF; Lutalyse; Pfizer Animal Health), followed in 66 h with TAI and a second 100-μg injection of GnRH (TAI; n = 582), and 2) cows were exposed to natural service (NS) without Estrous Synchronization (Control; n = 615). Within each herd, cows from both treatments were maintained together in similar pastures and were exposed to bulls 12 h after the last cow in the TAI treatment was inseminated. Overall, the percentage of cows exposed to treatments that subsequently weaned a calf was greater (P < 0.05) for TAI (84%) than Control (78%) cows. In addition, survival analysis demonstrated that cumulative calving distribution differed (P < 0.05) between the TAI and Control treatments. Weaning weights per cow exposed to treatments were greater (P < 0.01) for cows in the TAI treatment (193.4 ± 4.3 kg) than those cows in the Control treatment (175.9 ± 4.3 kg). Overall, increased returns plus decreased costs ($82.32) minus decreased returns plus increased costs ($33.18) resulted in a $49.14 advantage per exposed cow in the TAI treatment compared with the Control treatment. Location greatly influenced weaned calf weights, which may have been a result of differing management, nutrition, genetic selection, production goals, and environments. We concluded that ES and TAI had a positive economic impact on subsequent weaning weights of exposed cows.

    Abstract The objectives of this experiment were to compare Estrous Synchronization responses and AI pregnancy rates of beef heifers using protocols that included either CIDR or MGA as the progestin source. The hypotheses tested were that: (1) Estrous Synchronization responses after (a) progestin removal, and (b) PGF 2α ; and, (2) AI pregnancy rates, do not differ between heifers synchronized with either progestin source. At the start of the experiment (Day 0) in both years, heifers were assigned randomly to receive, MGA supplement for 14 days (MGA-treated; n =79) or CIDR for 14 days (CIDR-treated; n =77). On Day 14 progestin was removed and heifers were observed for estrus up to and after PGF 2α on Days 31 and 33 for CIDR-treated and MGA-treated heifers, respectively. Heifers that exhibited estrus within 60h after PGF 2α were inseminated by AI 12h later; the remaining heifers were inseminated at 72h after PGF 2α and given GnRH (100μg). More ( P P P 2α than MGA-treated heifers. Pregnancy rates did not differ ( P >0.10) between MGA-treated (66%) and CIDR-treated (62%) heifers. In conclusion, the use of CIDR as a progestin source in a 14-day progestin, PGF 2α , and timed AI and GnRH Estrous Synchronization protocol was as effective as the use of MGA to synchronize estrus and generate AI pregnancies in beef heifers.

    The objective of this study was to deter- mine if factors associated with the biostimulatory effect of bulls alter breeding performance of primiparous, suckled beef cows using a progestin-based Estrous syn- chronization protocol. We tested the hypotheses that the Estrous Synchronization response and AI pregnancy rates differ among cows exposed to bulls, continuously exposed to bull urine, and exposed to fence-line contact with bulls or cows not exposed to bulls or bull urine. Data were collected from 3 experiments performed over consecutive years. Cows were assigned to the following treatments: bull exposure (BE; n = 26) or no bull expo- sure (NB; n = 25) in Exp. 1, bull urine exposure (BUE; n = 19) or steer urine exposure (SUE; n = 19) in Exp. 2, and fence-line contact with bulls (BFL; n = 26) or no bull exposure (NB; n = 26) in Exp. 3.     Summary Background: it is known that coffee pulp can modify the oxidative status and fertility in dairy cows. Objective: to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with coffee pulp on the antioxidant capacity, lipid oxidation and reproductive characteristics of ewes during Estrous Synchronization and early gestation. Methods: forty Dorset-Suffolk crossbred ewes with 3 or 4 parturitions were allocated to two treatments: T0 (n = 21), ewes supplemented with 450 g of a control feed; and T1 (n = 19), ewes supplemented with 450 g of the feed with 25% coffee pulp. Supplementation began 14 days before Estrous Synchronization and ended 25 days after breeding. During Estrous Synchronization, progestogen (CIDR, Controlled Internal Drug Release) was inserted and left in situ for 11 days. Eighteen hours later, Estrous detection began with the aid of rams. Blood samples were collected at different times of Synchronization and during early pregnancy to determine antioxidant capacity, lipid oxidation and blood progesterone concentration. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 30 and 60 days after CIDR removal. Results: supplementation with coffee pulp did not affect Estrous onset, Estrous response or progesterone concentration, but fertility decreased from 100 to 78.95%. The antioxidant capacity measured using the FRAP technique was greater in coffee pulp supplemented ewes only before progestogen insertion. Coffee pulp did not modify lipid oxidation; however, this variable was affected by sampling time, decreasing after progestogen removal to its lowest values at 22 days into pregnancy. Conclusion: although supplementation with coffee pulp at 25% in the concentrate increased antioxidant capacity of ewes before insertion of progestogen, it is not recommended to use this percentage during Synchronization or early pregnancy since it can negatively affect gestation rate. Metodos: quarenta ovelhas cruzas Suffolk e Dorset de 3 e 4 nascimentos foram agrupadas no T0 (n = 21), suplementacao com 450 g de alimento controle e T1 (n = 19), suplementacao com 450g de alimento com 25% de polpa de cafe. A suplementacao iniciou 14 dias antes da sincronizacao do estro e terminou 25 dias depois do acasalamento. O hormonio progestina (CIDR, dispositivo intravaginal de libertacao controlada de farmaco) foi inserido por 11 dias. Dezoito horas depois da retirada iniciouse a deteccao do estro. Fizeram-se amostras de diferentes tempos do periodo e da gestacao inicial para determinar a capacidade antioxidante, oxidacao dos lipideos e concentracao de progesterona. Realizou-se o diagnostico de gestacao 30 e 60 dias depois de remover o CIDR. Resultados: a suplementacao com a polpa de cafe nao afetou o inicio do estro, a resposta ao estro e a concentracao de progesterona, mas a fertilidade decresceu de 100 a 78,95%. A capacidade antioxidante que foi medida pela tecnica de FRAP foi maior nas ovelhas suplementadas com a polpa de cafe somente antes da insercao do progestageno. A polpa de cafe nao modificou a oxidacao dos lipideos; no entanto, estes foram modificados pelo tempo de amostra, decrescendo depois de remover o progestageno ate 22 dias de gestacao. Conclusao: ainda que a polpa de cafe a 25% de concentracao incrementa a capacidade antioxidante antes da insercao do progestageno, nao e recomendado este percentual para as ovelhas durante a sincronizacao do estro e a gestacao inicial, ja que decresce a porcentagem de gestacao. El progestageno (CIDR, Dispositivo Intravaginal de Liberacion Controlada) fue insertado en los animales por 11 dias. Dieciocho horas despues de su retiro se inicio la deteccion de estros. Se muestreo a diferentes tiempos despues de la sincronizacion y durante la gestacion temprana para determinar capacidad antioxidante, oxidacion lipidica y concentracion de progesterona. El diagnostico de prenez se realizo 30 y 60 dias despues de la remocion del CIDR. Resultados: la suplementacion con pulpa de cafe no afecto el inicio del estro, la respuesta al estro ni la concentracion de progesterona. Sin embargo, la fertilidad disminuyo de 100 a 78,95%. La capacidad antioxidante, medida mediante la tecnica FRAP, fue mayor en ovejas suplementadas con pulpa de cafe, pero solo antes de la insercion del progestageno. La pulpa de cafe no modifico la oxidacion lipidica; sin embargo, si fue modificada por el tiempo de muestreo, decreciendo desde la remocion del progestageno hasta los 22 dias de prenez. Conclusion : aunque la suplementacion del concentrado con 25% de pulpa de cafe incremento la capacidad antioxidante antes de la insercion del progestageno, no se recomienda ese porcentaje durante la sincronizacion y gestacion temprana, ya que redujo el porcentaje de gestacion de las ovejas. Palabras claves: capacidad antioxidante, CIDR, oxidacion, progestageno. Resumo Antecedentes: a polpa de cafe pode modificar o estado oxidativo e a fertilidade em vacas leiteiras. Objetivo: avaliar a polpa de cafe na capacidade antioxidante, oxidacao da gordura e nas caracteristicas reprodutivas das ovelhas durante sincronizacao do estro e gestacao inicial. Metodos: quarenta ovelhas cruzas Suffolk e Dorset de 3 e 4 nascimentos foram agrupadas no T0 (n = 21), suplementacao com 450 g de alimento controle e T1 (n = 19), suplementacao com 450g de alimento com 25% de polpa de cafe. A suplementacao iniciou 14 dias antes da sincronizacao do estro e terminou 25 dias depois do acasalamento. O hormonio progestina (CIDR, dispositivo intravaginal de libertacao controlada de farmaco) foi inserido por 11 dias. Dezoito horas depois da retirada iniciouse a deteccao do estro. Fizeram-se amostras de diferentes tempos do periodo e da gestacao inicial para determinar a capacidade antioxidante, oxidacao dos lipideos e concentracao de progesterona. Conclusao: ainda que a polpa de cafe a 25% de concentracao incrementa a capacidade antioxidante antes da insercao do progestageno, nao e recomendado este percentual para as ovelhas durante a sincronizacao do estro e a gestacao inicial, ja que decresce a porcentagem de gestacao.     Abstract:

    Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ewe estrus Synchronization protocols including combinations of controlled internal drug releasing ( CIDR ) inserts for 5 d, GnRH, and PG on concentrations of progesterone ( P4 ) and reproductive performance of ewes during different breeding seasons. Experiment 1 was conducted during the transition season (August–October) and Experiment 2 was conducted during the anEstrous season (April–May). In both experiments ewes received 1 of 4 treatments: (1) untreated ( CON ); (2) CIDR (0.3 g P4) insert ( CT ); (3) CIDR and PG at CIDR removal ( CTP ); or (4) GnRH at CIDR insertion and PG at CIDR removal ( CTG ). Rams equipped with marking harnesses were introduced at CIDR removal (d 0) and ewes were observed for breeding marks twice daily at 0800 h and 1700 h. In Experiment 1, days to estrus was greater ( P  ≤ 0.01) in CON (9.5 ± 1.10 d) and CTP (6.5 ± 1.04 d) compared with CT (3.6 ± 1.03 d). No differences ( P  = 0.27) were detected in pregnancy rate within the first 17 d of the breeding season for CON, CT, CTP, and CTG treatments (37 ± 7.8%, 62 ± 7.5%, 56 ± 8.1%, and 46 ± 7.7%, respectively). Similarly, no differences ( P  ≥ 0.28) were detected among treatments for lambing rate and prolificacy. Contrasts for all CIDR treatments compared to controls determined that CIDR treated ewes had less days to estrus and lambing ( P  ≤ 0.05) than control ewes. In Experiment 2, days to estrus was greater ( P  ≤ 0.02) in CON (6.5 ± 1.05 d) and CTP (5.9 ± 0.88 d) compared with CTG (3.0 ± 0.88 d). No differences were detected ( P  ≥ 0.23) among treatments for overall percentage of ewes exhibiting estrus. No differences ( P  = 0.79) in pregnancy rate within the first 17 d of the breeding season were detected among treatments (42 ± 12.4%, 37 ± 11.3%, 35 ± 11.1%, and 50 ± 10.9% for CON, CT, CTP, and CTG, respectively). No differences ( P  ≥ 0.44) were observed among treatments in overall lambing rate and prolificacy. In conclusion, inserting a CIDR for 5 d prior to ram introduction regardless of the use of PG or GnRH, reduced the interval to estrus compared with untreated ewes but did not impact overall pregnancy rates, lambing rates, or prolificacy.

    Abstract:

    : Partial budget analysis was used to determine the economic outcome of estrus Synchronization (ES) and timed artificial insemination (TAI) in commercial cow-calf production. Suckled beef cows (n = 1,197) from 8 locations were assigned randomly within each location to 1 of 2 treatment groups: 1) cows were inseminated artificially after Synchronization of ovulation using the CO-Synch + CIDR protocol, which includes a 100-μg injection of GnRH (OvaCyst; TevaAnimal Health, St. Joseph, MO) when a controlled internal drug-releasing device (CIDR; Pfizer Animal Health, New York, NY) containing 1.38 g of progesterone was inserted. The CIDR was removed 7 d later, and cows received a 25-mg injection of PGF(2α) (PGF; Lutalyse; Pfizer Animal Health), followed in 66 h with TAI and a second 100-μg injection of GnRH (TAI; n = 582), and 2) cows were exposed to natural service (NS) without Estrous Synchronization (Control; n = 615). Within each herd, cows from both treatments were maintained together in similar pastures and were exposed to bulls 12 h after the last cow in the TAI treatment was inseminated. Overall, the percentage of cows exposed to treatments that subsequently weaned a calf was greater (P < 0.05) for TAI (84%) than Control (78%) cows. In addition, survival analysis demonstrated that cumulative calving distribution differed (P < 0.05) between the TAI and Control treatments. Weaning weights per cow exposed to treatments were greater (P < 0.01) for cows in the TAI treatment (193.4 ± 4.3 kg) than those cows in the Control treatment (175.9 ± 4.3 kg). Overall, increased returns plus decreased costs ($82.32) minus decreased returns plus increased costs ($33.18) resulted in a $49.14 advantage per exposed cow in the TAI treatment compared with the Control treatment. Location greatly influenced weaned calf weights, which may have been a result of differing management, nutrition, genetic selection, production goals, and environments. We concluded that ES and TAI had a positive economic impact on subsequent weaning weights of exposed cows.
